I really like Applause as the closing track because it summarizes a lot of the themes of the album and I think it musically and lyrically feels like a credits song. If ARTPOP was a movie and every song represented a scene, Gypsy would be the climax and resolution, and Applause would be the credits song and post-credit scene.

Because the setup of the narration in the video preyed on your/our nostalgic fanaticism for 'Lady GaGa'™- the pop icon. The idea that the world's, arguably, biggest pop star was waning in her pop culture celebrity stature that she had skyrocketed to the top of- just a few years before Artpop (that we as fans got to gloriously witness) was coming to an end and that we won't ever get another glimpse of that gaga in her pop prime again is a mournful and scary thought. A gagaless would be a boring world, and being aware of that reality is reflected in that little pause before stupid loves plays around 17:57. It invokes that feeling of something great closing to end like when you graduate high school or sumn.

No matter how impactful "Chromatica" will become, I will always remember "ARTPOP" as the album that changed my life the most. My five favorite songs of the album are 1. Swine: Not because of her performances for this song, but for the reason she wrote it. It helped me to scream out my mental pain, caused by sexual abuse. 2. ARTPOP: Besides the mysterious vibes, combined with Gameboy-sounds and melancholic strings in its instrumental, it helped me to unterstand that everything is connected and "could belong together". The influence of the song on my thoughts and my actions was leading me to another path in my life to cure my depressions and my burned-out soul by starting to paint. It also changed my perspectives on life itself. 3. Venus: It's funky, it's catchy, it's epic, it's the anthem to Aphrodite and even self-confidence ("Don't you know, my A$$ is famous"). It's an explosion of art, Greek culture and mythology. Everything combined in one song. 4. Gypsy: The vibes of this song are emotional af. I feel happy, but also with tears in my eyes, tears full of wanderlust. I wanna see and learn from the world, I want to feel like I'm a part of the entire planet, not only like a part of German society in the middle of nowhere. But as an introvert, who's afraid of humanity and who has no experiences with traveling, it always feels like there's a gigantic wall, I can't manage to climb. I love nature and I'd love to explore mountains, forests volcanoes, beaches, caves, jungles, deserts, oceans and seas. That's why, whenever I hear the song, my happiness is filled with tears, knowing that someday I'll may be able to climb the giant wall of fears and worries. 5. G.U.Y.: Not because of the song itself, but its ARTPOP-film music video. It shows how Gaga was used by her old management to be a moneymaking machine and when she was in pain (that time when her hip broke), the management dropped her off like she isn't useful any longer. But she raised up again, like a phoenix from the ashes, to get back her ARTPOP-era and finish the era like a boss. Back in these times, I was in a similar situation, where the only two things I've known were my couch and my work. So Gaga inspired me to change something, to take back my life like a boss, because it's my life, not the life of society or money. And looking back on that, I'm still very proud to have taken this step.

There is a common theme with criticism on ARTPOP: people just don't get it. Like, for real, every time someone criticizes ARTPOP i hear them say "i don't get this/that". The weird thing is I truly believe that i get it. I listen to the album and there is nothing that seems off to me. It feels cohesive, especially knowing what the songs are actually about and the mental state, gaga was in at that time. People say it's too over the place, while I say, it's just the right amount of diverse while still making sense. It's over the top, of course, but if you listen closely, you can feel how all the trashiness is a wall she built around the pain she had to go through at that time. She took her sadness and turned it into art. And again, i truly believe you can hear that! In the video you said, you didn't get if she was sincere or sarcastic wich confused you, but again, it totally makes sense to me. Cause life is not one thing or the other: even if you're being cynical, there is still some sort of truth behind it. The ugly truth behind the colorful mask. And THAT is ARTPOP for me. It is real and emotional while being extremely abstract. And that is what art is. I feel like people didn't care enough to dig that deep, because they consume music. They're not listening, just consuming. And i truly believe, that you can't consume ARTPOP.

She didn't release another duets album with tony Bennett it was just the one. Good video though, I think overall the biggest problem was the confusing and muddled release of it. Alot of the rollout seemed rushed and unfinished. Plus she promoted it as this high concept fusion of art and pop when really it's just a fun album of camp EDM with alot of the visuals being inspired by classical and modern art, and if she'd made that clear I think the general public would've been more on board. The music really was great and fans look back on it fondly nowadays.

Amazing review putting everything into perspective. ARTPOP is my favourite Gaga album and Applause is my all-time favourite Gaga song (so far)! I loved ARTPOP because I am also an artist and I know that your best work comes when you take risks and push yourself. However taking risks doesn't always work and I think this is what we saw in the ARTPOP era - the excitement and experimentation perhaps blinkering Gaga's vision and context. It also didn't help that her own management kept trying to step in and ruined Venus which would've been a killer video clip. I'm also gutted that the Xtina version of Do What U Want was not added to the album as I thought it was far superior to the R Kelly version because of the concept. Aura and Gypsy could've been incredible singles, but then again ARTPOP was not about the singles. It was about creating a framework bringing people together from all walks of life to celebrate art, music and love. PS: Really excited for Chromatica! 💖💖💖

Dope is one of my favorite lady Gaga songs a masterpiece both lyrically and vocally. It’s a shame what happened with DWUW bc it’s a great pop r&b song

Applause is such a perfect album closer imo. It’s really the song after the whole party of everything and the meaning fits so well in its spot.

Recently it has striked me as odd how many outlets classify Lady Gaga as one of the biggest and most talented artists of the recent memory, but still critics and music content creators always seem to look over her work, I see so many really smart youtubers making interesting analysis about many kinds of music and it's impact, but besides die hard fans, I don't see many music experts on youtube really analyzing Gaga's music, and I feel it's a shame since she has been working the whole decade to serve so many different sides of herself and her artistry that I feel should be analyzed from all that surrounded it, mainly, this, all the huge amounts of pain that Gaga endure before, during and after the release of the album and how she expressed it all through her artistry, I just feel Gaga should be given the chance to be a bigger case of study that she really is, instead of just overlooking her music because of her bombastic public persona.

If u don’t like ARTPOP is just bc u don’t understand the album. Such a MASTERPIECE.

When you say you don't understand if she wants to be sincere or sarcastic in this album... I think that's part of art! Art can be sarcastic as well as it can be sincere. I don't think it deviates from the album's concept. Loved the analysis, Gaga's albums are usually very solid and interesting to review.

ARTPOP is my favorite album ever. That said, this was a fair reviewi I'm new to this channel but I ant to say thank you for making this video. Its nice to see Gaga's early work reviewed objectively, respectfully, and thoughtfully for a change (instead of getting mocked in what is disguised as a "review".) Also thanks for making this since it got me really pumped for Chromatica XD

Didn't know this channel, but loved this video? I'm a self-and-gaga-aware little monster ever since Just Dance, and since the infamous release of ARTPOP in 2013, I've endured (and in some instances endorsed) some harsh criticism on the album and Gaga. But also have seen multiple people and publications just using it as an excuse to be flat-out mean to Gaga and release some sort of spite for her daring to achieve that level of fame. This one is not that at all. This video is a rare instance in which the author while being realistic about ARTPOP's flaws, contradictions, and fragilities, remained objetive in recognizing the great bits and pieces you can find in there. WELL DONE. Subscribed!

i totally love this album by the queen! it's actually my favorite followed by the first two. i only have two complaints. 1. she should've picked other singles to go with applause. like venus (whose themes heavily rooted throughout a lot of the performances and album cover), aura, fashion!, gyspy, and so forth. 2. if the chorus of a song is "do what you want with my body," then idk why you'd try to collaborate with a sex offender lmao. either a solo version, or the special version gaga recorded with christina aguilera should've been on the album. two strong women with equally strong voices that have faced sexual assault and have been chewed out by the public.

i have loved this art piece since she did all that she did for it. honestly amazing and great appreciation from a die hard fan for such great content on a wonderful record.

ARTPOP is Gaga's own "hyperpop", the exaggeration of what her signature brand of pop is. And it's great

This was a really well done analysis and recap/history lesson for those who weren’t listening to artpop back then! This was an era that contributed so much to my life in 2013/2014 and my hat is off to you sir for doing it justice!
