It's amazing how much stuff gets put online to be sold as "broken" and it just a simple fix.

That worked out rather nicely. We have Advance SPs tucked away in every corner of our house, and I have found a couple of the 101s over the years. I had no idea that there were two different models when I picked up the first one, and I was shocked by how much brighter it was.

I actually found a working GBA SP at a thrift store for $5 USD last year, it's even the AGS-101 model (I live in the US). The case is pretty scuffed up, so maybe I'll buy an NES-style replacement for it, if those are still available. Keep making these eBay Junk videos, they're pretty good.

So glad to see you back! I hope you would reconsider the patreon thing someone else mentioned. I think a lot of people would support you without expecting anything in return (I would). Look at MATTHEWMATOSIS. Dude makes like 2 videos a year, offers no incentive to his "patrons", and still has over 200 backers. Another example would be "mtashed" who does Destiny PVP videos and streams. He has a lot of financial supporters but offers them nothing in the way of perks. Not trying to take a jab at matthew, or mtashed, I'm subscribed to both. They makes solid videos.

We did get the frontlit version in North America, but by the time we got it, pretty much everyone that wanted an SP already had one and the DS had already been out for almost a year. So, wasn't a hot seller, and it is in turn not all that common here either. The most common colors are probably the Pearl Blue and the Pearl Pink seen here. The Graphite ones seem to be a bit rarer, probably because (not unlike the situation with the Smoke N64 several years earlier), the color wasn't that different from the regular Onyx SP.

It's been a while since I actively searched for GBA SP stuff so I don't remember every individual color, but the US SP was 100% guaranteed to be an AGS-101 based on the color. Pearl pink, pearl blue, and graphite are always AGS-101, if I recall correctly most red, and blue are AGS-001, and all silver and black are AGS-001. This is, of course, assuming nobody has replaced the shell. I think that most of the limited editions were AGS-101 as well? Probably wrong on that one. I know the spongebob one was.

Good find, But I personally don't like the SP because I find it too small, and it hurts my hands playing it after a short time, so I'm in the process of reshelling an original GBA, and doing the easy HaloLight mod. I'm just waiting for both of those to come into the mail, along with a tri-wing screwdriver.

Then again, the last time I looked was about 6 months ago so maybe it is not there anymore.

+yoyoyoshio267 It is possible to do it, I have seen it done. I am just not familiar with how to do it. If you go a Google search I'm sure there are a few forums on people who have done it. I sell video games in my spare time and I have sold in the past fat GBA and AGS 101 systems to people who said they were going to try to do the conversion.

Lol, I own an AGS-101 in that exact pink color. The backlight really makes a world of difference. I've never gone back to my other Gameboys after, not even the Color with its weird magnifying glass/front light attachment. (It came with the system. And is kind of a weird looking thing to be honest.) The SP does kind of cramp your hands after a while, though, and the Gameboy Original/Color games do stick out the bottom... I've never found a handheld that feels natural for extended play, though. Granted, I'm an Xbox junkie.

+Christopher Rowe if they are someone who buys storage lots, estate sale lots, etc.. They don't really care enough fix it, or test it thoroughly, so long as they can break the lot up, and make quick profit, and this looks like it might be one of those deals, and by the seller putting it on eBay as for parts, or Junk they are covering their ass so if it does not work, then they can say it was sold as is for junk, parts, etc.. I'm not defending the seller, just saying that's what happens.

Just shows that your average seller will spend more time creating the listing, than actually checking the devices. Good for you though, adding another backlit GBA SP to the collection. How do the AGS-101 compare to say the original chunky DS screen in terms of brightness & clarity? I sold on my DSlite when getting my white 3DS, but still have my original Japanese DS, the only system I've ever had *before* the UK launch :) I have some GBA comes I played via the DS, but never actually had a GBA or SP.

+DaveSimonH I think the original DS uses a front-lit screen. I'm not sure though. I think the DS Lite is the way to go if you don't want to splash out on a 101. I did a screen comparison vid a while back showing all the models together. The Micro is probably the best looking screen-wise.

Martin, should have slapped that bad boy into the GBA model 1 and got a pin converter. The OG GBA is so much more comfy and you can use a standard 3.5mm headphone jack.
