Let's Rewrite: Danganronpa 2 Chapter Three

Hey everybody! So now that this video has gotten a lot of attention (and a lot of feedback) I wanted to answer a couple of common questions that I have noticed in the comments: 1. I have heard about the theory that Fuyuhiko was meant to die instead of Hiyoko in Chapter 3 but that it was swapped at the last minute. While I thought about mentioning that in this video, I couldn't find any definitive proof that this was the case and didn't want to spread misinformation. (It doesn't change the fact that I would keep him alive) 2. Some people pointed out that Sonia was shown in the anime that she's actually a capable fighter so it would've been hard for Mikan to overpower her. I haven't watched the anime so I had no clue that was something to even consider! But I love that for her, and I would probably fix that if I had known earlier. 3. "Nagito had underlying conditions so that's why he was impacted by the Despair Disease more". You know you're right. That was an oversight on my part! I didn't have the time to review all his FTEs so I missed that. Sorry! 4. If you're upset with my rewrite because you love Sonia/ship her with Gundham and I killed her off, that's fine! I love Sonia and her relationship with Gundham as well! But please be respectful towards others who don't. We're here to have fun and talk about killing people. 5. Yes I've played V3. I imagine for the second problem: Mikan is able to fight with her memories of Ultimate Despair and what they did to protect themselves, they have a battle for a while until Sonia loses Mikan and runs across the music venue trying to find her. But Mikan gets her from behind, she knocks her out with the full length mirror (by barely tipping it over so it hits her head hard enough) then she deals the finishing blow with the scalpel

On Nagito's condition: What i got from the despair disease is that it's essentially a glitch or monokuma messing with the code, I don't think that medical conditions would interact with that? But I guess it could on a psychological level.

It's a pretty freaking cool idea. I also like to believe that, after despairing over the whole situation when losing her memories, she wouldn't try to run away from the execution. She was very serious about her role as a nurse if I remember correctly, and overwhelmed with guilt by failing as a nurse, and as a friend, she would willingly accept her death. Not without fear, but still accept it.

@@maer_chen yeah kinda, but i think this new mikan one was harsher cause not only did mikan slowly loses memory of what she loves and basically come back to the person we once knew, that old mikan have to struggle looking for reason why she killed her supposed friends. that anguish of not knowing why you did something yet you can still remember doing all of those things definitely hurts to even imagine. (spoilers for v3 below) gonta just heard his past self confess about what he did and while it has it has a different kind of despair (where you don't even remember doing something but have to come to live with the fact that you in fact did), i think it has a lesser impact

I, for one, don't mind the twist of Mikan being the killer because she got her memories back. It's nice foreshadowing for the final chapter and she would be the last person anyone would suspect. Hell, killing off Hiyoko makes sense if it was Mikan. I'm pretty sure no one hated her more than Mikan, so why not kill her off. However, the reason for Mikan, the ultimate NURSE, being the killer is that she caught the despair VIRUS. A nurse, who would have known to take any and all precautions when around a sick person especially someone who has an UNKNOWN VIRUS. You would have to make her forget pretty much all of her training for it to make sense. If you want to keep Mikan as the killer, play more into her being a nurse. Either have her give the wrong medicine to the victim(s) (since it is an unknown disease and there is no way of knowing what will work and what won't) or have her do a mercy killing by showing us that the disease is slowly killing them anyway. Afterwards, you can have her panic as she tries to hide that anyone has died. We can still have her be effected by the virus by being so close to the body for a lot longer than she wanted trying to hide it..

Since she’s a nurse, her strong immune system would lessen the physical symptoms, and slow the growth of her mental ones (idk if that’s how that works, but you get the idea). Then she serves as an unknown carrier, infecting the others and all that jazz. Also, Monokumas video could be what triggers Mikan to kill, by having a secret message in it that only she would understand since she has her memories, then the video is relevant and explains why she chose to kill when she did. Then everything else plays out the way it does in your version and we all cry when 3 best girls all get taken out in the same chapter.

Since they're in the virtual world, Monokuma can just make the disease go away, which is what he did right after the body discovery. I assume the whole disease was just him being Monika before she existed

While she would have been trained to avoid viruses, this doesn't outright prevent nurses from getting sick. It's not like she's wearing a HazMat suit etc... Beyond that, we learn later of the simulation, so this IS more of a computer virus than an airborne one, no precaution could realistically be taken, even by the Ultimate Nurse.

Oh my goodness- making Mikan forget why she killed anyone right before she gets executed was so evil. Imagine she’s just panicking and filled with so much guilt as she cries and begs for forgiveness and screams her confusions on *why* she can’t seem to remember something that was so important to her, enough to make her kill someone, and she never gets to know why she’d done such terrible things to her classmates that she tried so hard to befriend and was so patient towards someone like her even until death. Gave me chills just thinking about it. I even wish this was what really happened, it would’ve made the whole trial so much better just by having Mikan being so disheveled.

Something that can make the trial EVEN better is if Mikan tries to blame Hajime for Sonia and Ibukis deaths. It would make sense too! If she made the accusation that Hajime LIED about the video he saw. What she could have said is, "Hajime killed Ibuki and Sonia, then he destroyed the camera, and afterwards lied about seeing the video." Then Hajime would say that it could have been Mikan based on her being the nurse of Ibuki, and then Mikan could jump back stating, "Hajime, you might not understand this because you’re talentless, but I'm the Ultimate Nurse. At any moment, I know how to kill someone in a 100 different way’s right off the bat using medical equipment and biological information. Why would I even attempt a murder that is so painstakingly obvious, and kill Ibuki and Sonia in such a difficult and sloppy way?" And then the suspicion would shift to you as Hajime. And YOU would have to prove your innocence, just like how Makoto in the first game has to prove his innocence for not being the one responsible for killing Sayaka. See?! That way Mikan would be seen as an actual menace for using genuine logic to move suspicion off of her. And she could shrug off her bad behavior by having a small mental breakdown, and saying that she’s done being pushed around by everyone. Hiyoko especially. I could imagine Hiyoko insulting her, and Mikan being extremely cold and aggressive, saying something like, “You’re so lucky that I’m not the killer for this trial, Hiyoko. Because I’d target you first if I ever thought about killing someone. You’re the most unlikable person here. It should have been you that died, not Mahiru. And you’re hated the most now because the only person who genuinely cared for you died. You’re useless. Less than useless. You’re sick. You should kill yourself before I snap your neck.” And they could make the conclusion that she’s affected by the Despair Disease, but that isn’t enough to prove that she’s the culprit of the case. I would have loved seeing Remnant Mikan go off on her, and leaving Hiyoko at a loss of words. It would be really messed up and make the trial more disturbing. It could also make her develop herself more. Like, when the killer is found out, instead of Hiyoko insulting her or something, she instead just stays silent, and stays in the corner, and it would further obfuscate things if she saw Mikan’s memory’s go away, and return to her normal self. And Hiyoko would just be stunned by what was happening. And she could having genuine crying sprites, because now she’s starting to realize what kind of game she’s in.

To explain why Monokuma waits to cure her: while Mikan’s doing her whole spiel about her beloved & despair, Monokuma twigs she’s got Despair Disease and remarks how he never would’ve known since she’s showing no other symptoms before promptly curing her to rectify his mistake. I don’t know if it’s actually needed, but yeah. This was a really cool rewrite!

I would agree that would work, if not for it kind of messing up continuity with something. *Spoilers for Chapter 6 of DR2* Since all of the events take place in a simulation, and Monokuma hijacked the administrator role, they know everything going on in the simulation (apart from that one time it was hacked by Makoto and glitched out), down to minute details. I'm sure it's highly likely Monokuma would know whenever someone gets infected. Especially since it's the motive, they would pay very close to attention to how the next killing will unfold since they kind of need to be the omniscient arbiter that knows how everything went down for the sake of a fair trial. And they'd also enjoy watching cause they get their sick kicks from it.

Holy fuck, this video was INCREDIBLE. I’ve been into Danganronpa for 6 years now but I’ve, like, never seen anyone succinctly put down every single awful plot point in this chapter into one. Your video style is very interesting and your editing really emphasizes this video! It’s 6 in the morning so I’m so bad at describing, but you deserve more attention on your videos. I’m also not a Hiyoko enjoyer mainly, but the humanization of her while grieving for Mahiru was so so good and it truly was a missed opportunity of the game to immediately kill her off and not even pay a sliver of attention to her afterwards or make her character emphasized any-I absolutely adore Sonia, but your idea of Hiyoko having to process both the guilt of Sonia’s death while trying to help her tie her kimono AND the greif of Mahiru’s death could have done wonders for her characterization. I mean, we know she has the ability to connect to Mahiru, and it would be so interesting to see her break out of her abrasive shell to try and heal and form bonds with the likes of Hajime. Also, I loved your idea of Fuyu being able to identify it as a small blade-goddamn dude it would’ve been so neat! The missed opportunities…. The amount of effort you put into this video was SO good and I definitely subscribed! P.S the funniest part of this chapter and like the whole entire game is Hajime knowing full well Komaeda is literally in hospital because of a disease that makes him LIE ALL THE TIME and Komaeda goes “Hinata I hate you and I never want to see your face please go away” and Hajime is EXTREMELY OFFENDED and is like “What the fuck? Dude? Well okay then fuck you too” and leaves. It’s simply hilarious.

*Editing this because yall made some really good points!* An Idea for the Mikan execution: The title is bye bye ouchies, so those "ouchies" could be all the negative things people have done to Mikan. The syringe could be filled with something that takes those memories away. There would be like 3 syringes on each side of her. Her heart rate would obviously go up from the excessive amount of the medicine, but Mikan would be happy because she gets visions of people being nice to her, and not abusing her. At some point, another monokuma could jump out and stab her with a giant syringe labeled "hello despair" that brings all the bad memories back. As Monokuma pumps the "hello despair" fluid into Mikan via syringe, Mikan begins to swell as the despair utterly consumes her until she pops. I hope you like it!

This gives souda so much more to do!! My boy!! He can be the one to bring up in the trial like "hey guys I know this might be stupid but Im pretty sure I mentioned that the cameras have the ability to record footage... What if the killer used that?" This adds to the Gundham Angst so well. I assume that he had been considering the self sacrifice move for a while but was too afraid to go through with it until things got dire enough in chapter four. So... Hear me out... What if he already had decided to pull the self sacrifice card this time, because things were getting dire. Remember, we never saw much of what happened with how the people at the hotel were reacting to all of this. What if Sonia was taking it particularly hard but was only showing it when she wasn't with the sick people? I think that's within her character. Maybe she started trying to befriend Hiyoko because she felt bad for her and could see that Hiyoko was trying to change. It would make her accidentally walking in on Hiyoko not be a plot hole. Maybe Hiyoko asked Sonia to come over at a specific time and was secretly hoping she would be able to help her get dressed? After all, a Princess surely has experience with complicated garments, and Sonia has already expressed interest in Japanese culture. Maybe she mentioned previously how she loves kimonos to Hiyoko like in chapter 2 when the kimono is also relevant. Something like "i did not know you were struggling with dressing yourself! I would love to help you, but alas, I do not know the intricacies of the illustruious Japanese Kimono." so the idea is already in hiyokos head and she's the type to not outright ask for help but trick Sonia into walking in on her trying to get herself dressed, hoping that Sonia feels bad enough to help her. This adds to the Hiyoko Angst as well because what if she never got to apologize to Sonia for that, especially after finding out that Sonia went out of her way after Hiyoko was so mean to her to help her anyways and ended up dead just because of that. Hiyoko would finally be forced to confront the consequences of not outright asking for help. This would be able to spark her character arc for the rest of the game. Back to Gundham, what if he also immediately suspected Sonia as the killer before finding out she was a victim? He knows she has it in her to pull the self sacrifice move. Maybe she talked about how she "wishes she had the strength to end this" on that final night so when she isn't in her room in the morning? Gundam immediately assumes its her. Maybe he even says it's suspicious thst she isn't there but that it doesn't matter because they have to get to the music venue regardless, things will become clear soon enough. Something like that. So when they arrive at the music venue to see SONIA dead? The people who had been at the hotel IMMEDIATELY feel the pain fully. It isn't glossed over as a secondary murder at ALL. in fact, both halves of the cast are equally shocked that the other person is Also Dead. Poor hinata is like "wtf why is SONIA dead?" this would make the trial much more interesting bc I'm sure the people at the hotel would try to keep quiet about the events that had been taking place over there so as not to lead more suspicions onto Sonia (they might be thinking it looks like Sonia murdered Ibuki and got caught and killed by someone else and that would be a waste of trial time so they would be trying to lead Hajime AWAY from that conclusion) -the body discovery was where I had to pause this video to write all of this so things might change a bit from here, just for clarity's sake- I knew I'd disagree on some of the evidence lol Okay so the tape thing. I think it would be better to let Souda have his own moment there. Let him be the one to remember they could be used to record footage but he knew that if he was the one who brought that up without any reason, it would only draw suspicions onto himself. So he waited until Mikan slips up and says "how could I have been the one staging the hanging if I was with Hajime the whole time!" Because to me I don't know why she wouldn't get rid of the tape secretly if she was able to to the rest of it sneakily. It seems too obvious to me. I know as a player I would have easily put it together if I saw a character messing with the camera bc I also know, as a player I would have pin pointed the camera thing immediately if Souda mentioned there was a recording feature. So yeah just let Souda handle the camera, let him have His Moment lol -back to the video I just. The camera thing- We also don't need the gift tag in my scenario bc Hiyoko would know why Sonia went to the music venue by that point. I really love the addition of giving Fuyuhiko something to do in this chapter with the scalple thing, it makes total sense like thst entire line of thought is exactly what I'm using for giving Souda and Hiyoko and Gundham their own character moments as well. Bc ideally I'd like every character to have an important part in each chapter. (you can probably tell where this is going but I'll leave it until the end in the tl dr section) So Gundham's character moment in this chapter is quiet. It's in the background, for the most part. And doesn't become obvious until AFTER his death. This gives Souda his final character arc. Realizing that Gundham was likely planning that move for a lot longer than anyone else realized. He thinks about how Gundham immediately suspected Sonia because OF COURSE he hasn't forgotten about that. And he realizes how bad Gundham must have felt for not going through with his plan back then. Because if he had? Only him and Ibuki would have died. Maybe the killing would have ended there. That might just have been enough to pull them all together. But now, Souda will never know. Hence. His final character arc. Learning to stand on his own and because he has no other choice. We can further explore his friendships with Hinata AND Fuyuhiko this way, as well. Let me have (one of my) ot3's okay?? Lol -side topic, Akane and Nidai since I haven't brought them up at all and I did say that I like every character to have something to do- Honestly I think we can leave them as is mostly in this chapter, they need to be fixed in chapter FOUR instead, as well as have had their relationship more developed in general before chapter four. But in regards to the trial they don't necessarily have to do much, they shine in the next chapter. -double side note, chapter 4- I won't say much as it isn't the point of this BUT I don't think the problem with chapter four is inherently that Nidai got double killed immediately. I think it actually works as a subversion of the established rules which is a theme of chapter four anyways. I mean, up until that point Monokuma had never done ANYTHING that severe in terms of motive so I think it fits to crush our established expectation that "they just killed him off he CANT POSSIBLY die now" We can easily fix the issue with this by making Nidai the killer instead of Gundham, btw. Like who would expect Nidia to be the killer bc you'd be like "they wouldn't kill him off twice, look, they just spared him!" But the rest of it is basically the same. Gundham just lost the battle instead. Which would further Soudas character arc if Gundham was the victim of that chapter instead of the killer but we found out he was SO CLOSE to being the killer and he planned to Kill. Which does change how you think of someone. But about the breaking the established rule just think about how many times a character has almost double died in this series up until this point and we have been spared of it. It would really draw suspicions away from Nidai until the fight became obvious. I mean everyone already suspected komaeda, anyways.... But okay tangent over lol - Now we move onto the final topic left to discuss, the execution of chapter 3 - This is just correct and good and I have nothing to add, as with most of this video LMAO -final thoughts and TL;DR- I loved this video so much. You have no idea. No. Idea. And here comes my question for you!!! CAN I USE THIS FOR MY SDR2 REWRITE FANFIC?? AND DRAW FAN ART!!?? I plan to do my own rewrite anyways but I would absolutely love to use a LOT of stuff you came up with for it (with credit, obviously!!) Either way, thank you for making this video! I loved your ideas so much. Making Mikan forget Junko and the reason she killed Ibuki/ Sonia would have been such a good move. Untill that point, every blackned got the despair of facing their deaths. Teruteru died without knowing what happened to his mother, Peko died just after Fuyuhiko confessed his love to her. Those scenes made the blackned characters be so much more cared about when they die. If Mikan had forgot the whole despair schtick the whole class would be heartbroken with her being confused, sad, grieving with guilt. It would be specially interesting to see Hiyoko's reaction to the whole thing.

Now focusing to the other characters, I liked how you gave Fuyuhiko another role for him to participate, including him using his talent. Its just weird how being a crime boss really didn't help anyone at all in the cannon game.

Also, Sonia's death would make her a least disliked character, in my opinion. Although it would probrably make her less memorable, she woundt be criticised of being boring anymore. And honestly, i think they could pull back some of her iconic lines from after chapter 3 so she could stand out more. Also they could have developed her and gundhams relationship on chapter 3 daily life, too make her death more impactful. If that were the case, both gundham and Kaz would have been impacted by her death, which would make it way more emotional then seeing the character everyone hates die without redeeming herself.

Then, to replace the small roles Sonia had in the rest of the game. After being very impacted by her death, we could see kazuichi and gundham start a rivalry during the chpt 3 trial. One of them accusing the other just because of jealousy and not being able to grief proprerly. But after things resolve, we could see they start bonding with one another, and coming to an understanding. This would proprably happen on the amusement park part of the game, now that we dont have to make the jokes on how Sonia isnt a virgin. Aeris Akamastu covers their relationship very well on their take on rewriting this trial and the rest of dr2.

Continuing on, the story would progress as normally, and the students would enter the fun house. There, Kazuichi would pair with gundham, hiyoko would pair with chiaki, fuyuhiko with akane, and nekomaru with hajime. Nagito could go around on his own. He still thinks hes a trashbag at this point, anyway. Then not only kazuichis bond with his "ex rival" would grow but also hiyoko would start bonding with chiaki. The game continues as normal and after gundham sacrifices himself, leaving the divas to kazuichi, who has a breakdown after losing his friend. It would also make even more sence and importance to the creation of mini mechamaru. I could see Kazuichi saying how he still has the divas to remember him of gundham and Sonia, so he wanted akane to have something to remember nekomaru too.

@@softie_vinyl Or you could do what V3’s third chapter never followed through on despite it being an interesting concept. Ok. So say Mikan mercy killed Ibuki and tried to cover it up. Well what if *someone else* were to have walked in on Mikan fresh off of killing Ibuki and is currently panicking because she realized that she’s a murderer. What if this third person were to have killed Mikan? That’s right. The second blackened kills the first blackened meaning that a double murder still happens, but it’s not quite what it seems. Now the Class Trial begins and we now have a V3 type situation. Monokuma taunts the students, saying that there were two blackened this time, but only the one who performed the first murder counts. Cue the class scrambling around from thinking that there are two alive blackened, to figuring out if the second blackened is the first one or not. And although the second blackened is revealed, they still don’t know who the first one is… or do they? Hajime and the others finally figured out that the first blackened was actually one of the very victims they saw dead. Mikan. And although they voted right and technically no execution would happen, Monokuma thought that it’d be too boring, so he decided to brutally execute Milan’s corpse and now the chapter ends with a known blackened technically getting away with murder simply because the first murder is the only one that counts.

Thank you for acknowledging the missed motive opportunity with Mikan killing Hiyoko! When I was playing the game I felt like Ibuki was a missed motive opportunity too- not because she tormented Mikan the way that Hiyoko did, but because Ibuki, Hiyoko, and Mikan were all part of that friend group from the second case, and with Mikan getting her memories back, the fact that they had Mikan kill her two former semi-friends without acknowledging it at all in-game (IIRC) felt so weird to me. The motive didn't even have to be some extra grudge against Ibuki for standing by while Hiyoko bullied Mikan or whatever, it could have just been that Mikan wanted Ibuki, as someone she'd apparently spent a lot of time with, to experience wonderful despair, too, or honestly, just a specific mention of their former friendship to drive home how messed-up Mikan became after regaining her memories. Love the rewrite- the twist with Mikan losing her memories again right before the execution would have been V3 levels of BRUTAL, and I think I have a phobia of needles after watching that animation.

This is kinda dark but I was wondering- What if for the execution that Mikan is given a hallucinogenic, causing her to hallucinate her worst fears, which forces her to overdose on certant relaxants and her death involves her spazzing or convulsing violently through drug overdose? I always saw Mikan's execution basically being just an overdose injection, with the whole "being shot up into space" thing being metaphorical for her getting the ultimate high as she died. I would've executed it different, but I'm with that general idea. Cruel, despair-inducing deaths are fine as the norm, but I think there's too great an irony in Mikan, the one who's commonly seen as the sad and frightened crybaby, dying with a smile on her face. XD

I really enjoyed your review of this chapter. As a writer myself, Danganronpa is a game that I have a love/hate relationship with. At times, it’s exciting, emotional, and mind-blowing, but other times, it can be frustrating and drags on way too long over unimportant topics. Personally, I really hate the double murder “rule” as I think it waters down each game’s chapter 3. One of the victims always seems so disconnected from the actually connection between the victim and killer and feels like they were thrown away just to cull numbers-not because it was appropriate for the story. I have my own ideas for how I might rewrite this chapter as well. I’m definitely interested to hear more thoughts you have on other chapters in future content if that’s something you plan on continuing.

@@wutduck1763 There will be spoilers in this comment... First of all, I would've swapped Taka and Hiro. Taka was actually starting to develop as a character and had way more interesting potential to see how his weird "spiritual possession" aspect played out. Having said that, the really interesting thing I would've done differently in that chapter would be Celeste *not* kill Hifumi and instead set him up to be a killer so that he gets executed as she hates him and wants him gone. It would really play up what type of cruel person she could be and make her a more engaging antagonist over Byakuya, though assuming she ultimately survives unless something else changes about chapters 4 or 5, perhaps she could develop a sense of guilt and regret once regaining her memories.

I have been sitting here watching Danganronpa rewrites all day and this is, by FAR, the best one I've listened to. Your execution is thorough, your judgment is balanced, and your criticism is padded by passion and an intention to improve instead of to complain. As much as I love Sonia, I wholly believe she should've been swapped out for Hiyoko here (especially to improve Kazuichi and Hiyoko's potential development arcs). And that idea to have Mikan re-lose her memories right before her execution? Utter brilliance. I cannot WAIT to see what else you do for this series!

This is a really well thought out and detailed video! I agree with a lot of the points you made (and that new execution is everything I wanted and more!), but I personally feel like there are a few holes in the revision. Firstly, a few points about the despair disease: - If the despair disease only affects Nagito, how does it spread to Akane and Ibuki after they quarantine Nagito? There are ways it's possible (came into contact with something Nagito touched or just came into contact with the bugs Monokuma set up?) that need to be touched on. - If it only affected Nagito to begin with, I feel like there would be a conversation between the students whether it's even worth it to help Nagito who has been so antagonistic up to this point. It may be a great opportunity for them to collectively discuss that, despite his actions, they still consider him a classmate, as well as how helpful he was during trial 2. I do really like the idea of the other students witnessing it spread to others though, because it would imbue more fear about getting the disease and cement how necessary it is for them to quarantine the sick people. But this may make it too obvious that Mikan has caught it if it's shown to spread very easily (although it's arguably pretty obvious in the game's story line regardless). - I like that you touched on a reason for Mikan not being as severely affected by the disease, but on reflection it's shown that only Nagito seems to be suffering from life threatening consequences of the disease. Akane and Ibuki seem physically fine besides their fever, so perhaps it's unnecessary to give Mikan a unique reason for appearing fine. It’s Nagito who has a unique reason for not being fine. - Additionally, the issue of Mikan still having despair symptoms after being ‘cured’ can be explained by the fact that all of the sick students have memories of their time being sick (eg: Nagito remembers the “look of despair” Mikan had while he was being nursed). Whether or not Mikan was cured, she remembers remembering, so the memories her illness evoked would remain. I feel the issue is with the varied symptoms people have with the disease. Why does only Mikan remember things while the others just have personality changes? It would be interesting if they all remembered aspects of their time as ultimate despair, but this would further complicate things so I’m not sure how it would work. As for the murder plan: - It's definitely true that Mikan's movements during the main story line are a stretch, but I feel your revision makes it too obvious that Mikan is the killer. In particular, being left by Hajime at the music venue, then having Hajime return to another corpse would surely make the player immediately suspect Mikan. If everyone but Mikan, Fuyuhiko and the sick people are at the motel, it pretty much only leaves Mikan or Fuyuhiko as the people capable of revealing the body. Maybe Fuyuhiko would vouch for Mikan, but considering everything she had to do before meeting up with him, there would be a long stretch of time where he couldn't vouch for her whereabouts. - Having Mikan record the video in advance is a solution to the lack of time, but both mentioning there’s a recording function earlier, having her show it to Hajime and then seeing Mikan mess with the recorder afterwards would likely make it obvious that Mikan recorded the video. I think it’s not too much of a stretch for her to have recorded the video live if you consider she may have just put the hospital gown over her clothes, and simply opening the curtains and folding up the ladder could have taken about five minutes. The issue really lies with the time it takes to get to the music venue, reveal the body, do all the stuff and seal the door. Your revision helps cut the time needed by having Mikan already be at the music venue, but as I stated it immediately makes her the prime suspect. I think there needs to either be; a) something occurring that causes Hajime to be away for more than 10 minutes or b) simply more distance between the music venue and the motel. - Another thing that makes Mikan suspect #1 is the scalpel used to kill Sonia. Very few people went to the hospital, so it once again makes Fuyuhiko, Hajime and Mikan the only ones who could’ve obtained it (unless someone from the motel group snuck it out earlier?). If it weren’t for the previous things that make Mikan obviously the killer, it might’ve been acceptable since Fuyuhiko can only give a vague description of the murder weapon. But the second the player thinks it's a scalpel, putting the pieces together would be too easy in my opinion. The change of victim and the alternative execution are great ideas. The logistics of the despair disease are tricky though, considering the game doesn’t explain or utilize them very well. And both giving Mikan enough time to commit the murder and not making it any more obvious she’s the killer than it was in the game is also super tricky. Regardless, I really enjoyed this video and the effort put into it! I was wondering, have you played Danganronpa V3 yet? It’s my personal favourite but there are many people who like 2 more. I’m curious what your opinion of it is :). Thank you for reading my ridiculously long ted talk.

Oohh I rlly like your idea! Tho when it comes to the despair disease I thought the reason why Nagito is almost dying is because you learn in his fte's that Nagito already is sick and has a life expectancy of around a year, so it makes sense why he's the only one out of the three sick ppl that is dying (Ibuki and Akane seem fine to me except for their fever). So the despair disease isn't actually lethal. But I think that even tho that's the case the idea of Nagito being the first one to be sick and it spreading and then the others being afraid to catch the disease because of how dangerous it seems to be, would still work rlly well! Because what if Monokuma chose Nagito to be the first one with the disease on purpose because he knows that Nagito will be affected the worst by it so the students are more desperate to find a cure. Anyways that is what I thought! I'm sorry if this is a bit difficult to read lol it's difficult for me to put my thoughts into words..

I wouldn't change the victim, I would just change the circumstances of the death. Hiyoka has an epiphany and goes to find Milan (who she is harshest with). She walks in on the murder. She starts apologising to Mikan. The irony being that no one ever apologises to Mikan. Mikan who is gripped by the despair disease can't even comprehend this apology. The crime is discovered and Hiyoka is killed before she can raise the alarm. I think you need a character like Sonia to add calmness to the last batshit crazy chapters. Hiyoka would just add to the chaos haha

I love your ideas... but there's a problem with a bit of the logic. Sonia would be able to fight or run away from Mikan. I know she isn't the most athletic, but it is apparent that she has some physical capabilities that exceed most, even knowing how to properly use weaponry in one of the ova episodes.

I'd like to think during the execution you made for Mikan is that she was tied to the bed and that she was screaming in pain AND for help; since she's remembering her memories where she was bullied and such, she's screaming for help cause that's what she hoped for during those days, someone to come help her and save her, also the pain from the syringes that's killing her. This can both be despairing for both Mikan and the rest of the students who watched as she struggled to get out of her restraints and was screaming in pain/for help. Till eventually, those screams turn into whimpers and finally, silence. Dawning onto the others how much pain she was probably feeling during her last breath

I must say this was brilliant. While I don't find Chapter 3 as bad as many say it is especially with reveal of Mikan being the culprit being soul crushing for me to watch even when I come back to that Chapter, I can definitely agree that this chapter could have been so much better. I think a lot of your improvements helped not only make the chapter flow more smoothly but make it feel even sadder with Mikan not understanding why she killed even to her death. I love how not only made more the characters be involved in the murder with Sonia dying because of Hiyoko, Souda having the cameras be able to record tapes and Fyuihiko saying that Sonia was killed by a sharp object. I feel the Dispair Disease as amotive in general is a hard one to really make work in where I'm not sure if I'd want her to lose her memories after the trial and she gets executed before anyone can say if they forgive her. Or have it be like "X Character" from V3 where she has no idea that she even commited a murder in the first place.(Not saying who in case no one's played or finished V3 yet) I could see her maybe starting to act a bit more confident due to her being very determined to help the others while they were sick and since Ibuki was a patient it'd make her feel that more determined to find out who killed her patient. Perhaps she maybe even realizes she's the culprit and instead of trying to prove why she is, it could be Hajime and the others trying to prove she isn't, thinking that she's being hard on herself as usual until they see that she's being serious and the reason she never says anything before or during the trial was that she was trying to think of why she killed in the first place. Then it could show the others either still viewing her as friend or feeling sorry for her after hearing that she was infected and maybe it could be a point where she realises that the others do care about her, as well as maybe being the first person to say everyone needs to escape and survive which could be echoed again in Chapter 4 when Nekomaru and Gundam sacrifice themselves so the others can escape and have them realise they can't just let themselves die and let everyone die in vain. They need to escape for not just themselves but for the sakes of everyone that had died before them. Plus it would be really cool to see that the motive that was supposed to give Mikan dispair actually gave her hope in her final moments and show how much everyone's kindness really changed her. (Though that could be my huge bias for Mikan talking) Either way I really enjoyed watching this and it even makes me want to try doing some rewrites of my own for fun. (Also that fan-made execution was bone chilling and I love it!)

Sonia dying could really boost Sodas arc. Either he finally realizes that she would better with Gundham and is gonna honer her happy ending by moving forward on her death and getting an amazing hope. He may have not gotten his dream girl. But he knows that she got her happy ending like the true princess she was, he’s happy for her. Or, Sonia ends up being a reason for him to live on. Sonia died and he couldn’t save her, he may have been a sacrifice if so, but he couldn’t have been there for her. And she died. He develops a hope to live on, for Sonia. (He maybe imagines her cheering him on in a loving way- MAYBE OKAY-)

I love this. and imagine the pain he would feel after chapter 4 when the man Sonia (is implied to have) loved kills nekomaru so souda (again) could live on. the man he despised and the woman he loved both died. so he feels he must carry on. side note: without Sonia there I think gundham would give his hamsters to either souda or Hajime and if it's souda it just gives him more reason to live as he now has to care for the hamsters

As a Hiyoko lover (she's my favorite SDR2 character) and someone who has been in this fandom for too long, I can say safely that I enjoyed this video. Nagito wasn't actually on deaths door due to the Despair Disease, but rather pre-existing conditions. You technically only find this out in his free time events which are optional and don't really affect the story. But Mikan is a NURSE, for crying out loud. And not even a bad one, she's an ultimate- she's at near perfection with her job. She could probably see that Nagito wasn't terminally ill via the motive but pre-existing conditions. Which could give a layer of fake hope, and calm things down for a good role coaster of emotions. But my main compliant with this chapter is actually how terribly the used their tools. I would hope that they would make Hajime a victim of the disease. Mikan literally slept on top of him whilst she had to disease and he was surronded by all of the despair victims. This could give hints to Izuru Kamakura, and the death of the real Chiaki. It'd make the chapter more interesting, because 1. Hajime isn't leading this chapter, he's stuck in a hospital and is acting unsympathetic and unlike himself. He's interacting with his classmates and especially Mikan and Nagito incredibly differently. I won't go to far into it now but I think not infecting Hajime was a lame choice.

THE WAY YOU WROTE CHAPTER 3 WAS PERFECT!!!! I really liked how you cared about every detail just for the story to make sense!! It would make sense for Sonia being one of the victims just to tell Hiyoko that there’s people who care about her, but I would also be sad because Sonia is one of my favorite characters :’( Also I really liked when you mentioned about how Danganronpa mistreats and sexualizes Mikan, something that happens in most anime games or even anime itself and to stop sexualizing the character you made a different execution scene that makes even more sense and the original execution. The Mikan’s execution you made just tells everything about Mikan’s story, the abuse she suffered and it evolves into her ultimate talent as a nurse by using the overdose scene, where everyone is looking at her maliciously while she dies in an hospital bed. AMAZING!!!! But anyways I would love if they had made the chapter how you described it, It really is amazing

This was a really impressive and thoughtful video! Personally, to me, the most egregious part of this chapter is the Motive. It makes sense when you understand the larger context of Monokuma's plan, but unlike the other two games it doesn't really make you feel like the culprit is "guilty" because they are being chemically altered. It's sort of helped by the fact that theoretically it's the "real Mikan" who is committing these murders, but still, it feels weird. It's the same reason Chapter 4's motive is weird, it's not a motive to murder, it's compelling a murder. Changing the motive completely (I like the idea of Mikan dealing with the fever symptoms although I'd make the specifics that she does this by medicating herself rather than just pure constitution) would almost require a full rewrite of the Chapter, so personally, I'd just modify the murder so it feels like more cohesive with the rest of the chapter. There are two plots in Chapter 3: Akane wanting to fight Monokuma and ultimately doing so, leading to Nekomaru's possible death; and Fuyuhiko's return and how everyone, especially Hiyoko adjusts to this event. Murders usually follow from the chapter's plot, so I'd want them to lead in. I wouldn't change the victim, or the killer, but I'd change the circumstances. Off the top of my head, I'd make it so that Hiyoko was actually going to meet with Fuyuhiko to confront him the night of the murder, perhaps with a haphazard murder plan of her own, but ends up getting kidnapped by Mikan who specifically targets Hiyoko for being a bully. Fuyuhiko arrives at the meeting location, finds Hiyoko is a no-show, and goes home. Perhaps Mikan would say that she chose Ibuki instead of Akane because she could see Akane's love for Nekomaru and didn't want to destroy it. I'd also make a subplot in the investigation where Akane has gone missing so there's "is there a third victim?" and they discover just squirreled away somewhere, wallowing in her guilt over Nekomaru's death?, but rebuilds her spirit over the course of the trial. Your rewrite is definitely an improvement though, especially the execution. P.S. It's not illegal to like Kazuichi, but he has a sexually-harassing creep who acts like his "good deeds" earn points with a woman who repeatedly rebuffs his advances to the point of him getting off on her insulting him and he still doesn't give up. Apart from his obsession with "dating a blonde lady", he also goes to perv on girls on at least two other occasions. He's not worst boy of DR2, but that's only because Teruteru exists.

Well Mikan's dispair Dessie is diffrent she kills people that hate and hurt like all the time so it reminds her of her old memories and beings to kill Ibuki first ( Because she has gullible Dessie from the despair disses ) and hyioko ( because Hyioko mostly reminds her of her old school and plus she talks really mean towards her so she deiced she kills so she haven't relive that pain again). Plus her education kinda sucks but if we do a bit of tweaking and editing it will have the game of operation ( YK the kids game that tries to get out the species of their body). Still, the buzzing feeling every time she made a mistake is down near downstairs. Hence, if she makes a lot is kinda liked it then if she kills the patient so she will be a new patient and rip a single thing out of her, and before her heart got taken out and the organs will be a lot of medicines that makes her feel pain and then she dies.

It would be really cool if when Sonia died, that could cause Kazuichi grieve for her, and also it would also plant seeds for future interactions with one another. Like imagine if Gundham helped Kazuichi by comforting him about Sonia’s death, and eventually it could cause Kazuichi to possibly develop feelings towards Gundham as well. (Kazuichi is canonically Bisexual). Then chapter 4 could play out normally, except that Kazuichi wouldn’t be quiet the entire time, but instead he could be heartbroken that both of the people that he’s supposed to care for, have perished. See!? This wouldn’t make Gundham’s role in future chapter’s as not empty without Sonia, because her role could be performed by Kazuichi. It would also make it so all of the survivors in this better au would have lost someone, and they need that in order for hope to shine brighter. Kazuichi would have lost both Gundham and Sonia, Hiyoko would have lost Mahiru, Fuyuhiko would have lost Peko, Akane would have lost Nekomaru, and Hajime would have lost Chiaki. (Or possibly Nagito).

It's because she bullied Mikan and the fandom relates to her since she's basically just a ball of severe mental illness. Which isn't a bad thing, but that relatability, empathy and sympathy makes them overlook the fact that she isn't that great a person. Mikan's FTEs and the 3rd trial really rub me the wrong way. But yeah, the fact that she specifically targets Mikan, a fan favorite, it makes them demonize Hiyoko further. But Hiyoko was genuinely trying to change, and I loved her backstory, I wish we could've seen her at least get a little further with her character development before dying.

I love this video it's my favorite "re write" of the cases, I also like the explanation of why Mikan couldnt commit the murder because it was basically impossible everybody else when desrciribing it are like "it's impossible, okay let's talk about Nagito for 3 hours now!" I personally also think that Sonia Nebāmaindo (or Nevermind) should have been the blackened who killed to ensure the safety of the Kingdom of Novoselic, and before her death and in her execution Instead of being more princess like she is more peasant like (this would also mean changing up Sonia and giving her a character, which would let Kazuichi and Hiyoko develop, as in my opinion out of all 5 survivors, Akane Owari is the only one who actually developed in the game and at a normal rate, Fuyuhiko developed too quickly and made his arc unrealistic, Kazuichi had room for development but they decided not to give him any, Sonia stands there the entire game, and Hajime develops af the final 3 seconds of the game, which I find funny as everybody acts as if the opposite is occurring, with Owari being the bad survivor and the other 4 being gods [I like Akane Owari, Hajime Hinata, Kazuichi Souda, and Fuyuhiko Kuzuryuu, and hate Sonia so it's not like I am playing favourites for Akane]

@@thetiniestleaf I personally chose Sonia as the blackened as in my opinion all the trial 3 blackened could have killed whenever in the game (I am assuming that you arent done V3 yet so I wont spoil but spoilers for the first game) With Celestia she literally could have killed anybody whenever, but specifically chose to wait until she could perfect her plan and her entire downfall was a stupid line that wasnt even suspicious of "we are going to die just like they did" (dosent sound suspicious she could have said she was talking about everybody who died) And the V3 chapter eculprit also could have killed whenever, if the trial 3 motive hadn't been introduced Celestia still would have killed and the V3 chapter 3 culprit could have killed whenever and used the motive as a cover Mikan on the other hand dosent follow this rule she could have only killed when under the effects of the Despair disease, whereas if Sonia was a concerned princess who would do anything for her nation she would fill the role of being able to kill whenever like Celestia and V3's chapter 3 culprit

The 3rd trial and final trial are pretty much the only things keeping me from calling 2 the best in the series game in the and is the sole reason why I consider 2 to be the worst game. my biggest problem is just how useless this trial is compared to every other trial in every other game. In every other game I felt like something was accomplished other then finding the killer. The first trial sets the tone for the game the second trial help with Fuyuhiko’s and Hiyoko’s development. The 4th trial helps with Sonia’s and Gundahms development. The 5th trial reveals the traitor and Nagito’s goals. The 6th trial wraps everything up. What does this trial accomplish um killing 2 really good characters and then the worst characters in the whole series. Um foreshadowing future events that already has a good bit of foreshadowing. It doesn’t affect the characters at all it I didn’t learn anything knew about the games narrative or world. I feel like you could take Mikan out of the game and just have Ibuki and Hiyoko survive and nothing of substance would change. To be fair the same can be said for trial 3 in the first game but at least the actual trial was good. Plus the killer wasn’t Mikan so that’s also a good thing.

You know the culprit after like 2 minutes, the main clue is stupid, and don't even start me on the "He will kill us just like he killed them" sentence. Dr2CH3 not only have the shock value and the foreshadowing, but also a great plan when you consider it came from the most clumsy character of the group. It's not the best trial by any mean, but it's way better than both of the other C3 trials.

Like sure celest was fairly predictable but at the very least she is actually entertaining to watch and listen too unlike Mikan. Also Kiyo was actually one of my least suspected people going into trial 3 especially after it was revealed he killed Tenko. While in the moment it definitely was a little deflating to have the killer be Kiyo in retrospect the decision to make him the killer was actually pretty smart. It played with at least my expectations fairly well.

Most rewrites of this chapter I've seen completely take out most of the elements that we're worthwhile, but this was a genuinely great rewrite that addressed a lot of the issues I have with the original, even though I don't agree with Sonia being the second victim. when i first played sdr2, i actually initially thought that mikan took advantage of ibuki’s gullible disease and got her to kill hiyoko, and then killed ibuki herself afterwards so that she could be able to graduate. or at the very least used ibuki’s gullible disease to stage the hanging scene. idk, i thought that would’ve been a cool and more interesting way to go about this one.

I really like the way you rewrite chapter three, especially the execution. Mikan is one of my favorite characters so I was heartbroken and confused by the time the class trial ended. Making Mikan forget all her memories before getting executed is ingenious. That would really make the active students question themselves. I hated how the developers sexualized Mikan and I wish that they could've given her more character than using her as fanservice. I think most people can agree with me. The execution was GENIUS. As someone who can't handle watching someone get shots, that definitely got me curled up in my chair. As for making Sonia the victim instead of Hiyoko, I thought that was a good idea as well. As much as I love Sonia, I feel that Sonia doesn't really impact the story that much. The only thing that story would lack without Sonia is her funny lines. While she did play somewhat of a role in chapter 5, you could probably easily replace her with Hiyoko. Hiyoko however, I don't really know how to feel about her. She can be a lil asshole sometimes but I always try to give her a second chance. Maybe if she were to be kept alive then maybe I would've liked her just a little bit more. Because THEN her arc would be finished by the end of the game. So yeah, my review. I did not intend for the comment to be this long but I just really enjoyed the video. Chapter 3 of Goodbye Despair was definitely an interesting one and I prefer this version over the original. So thank you for making this video :D
