The evil Aes Sedai doesn't kill Lan's lover, she kills the daughter of his lover. Also, Moraine and Suan weren't overly powerful when they became Aes Sedai, as their power was still growing. They were only mid-range in power. But, i only know those things cause i finished re-reading that book 2 days ago. So those minor flaws are understandable.

Small correction: Malkier was consumed by the Blight, not taken over by any of the Borderlands nations.

Don't be too hard on yourself. We all make mistakes from time to time. Just wondering though, what were thoughts about the other two prequel books that were originally planed?

I have a massive soft spot for new spring since I read it immediately after fires of heaven. Very cathartic

I have read the series twice and am now diving in again. I am reading several other series along with The Wheel of Time. I do want to say. These are condensed summeries and I have enjoyed them. Only took a couple days to listen. You had me glued to the screen. Well done..

I was wondering why this story seemed to drag its feet, and your explanation was spot on. I do have to say if it wasn't for your brief yet detailed review, I might have just laid the book down and said "Forget abou it"

You really enjoy talking about Wheel of Time. I like that you like it. Have you ever considered doing character studies for the series? Delving into different characters and your thoughts about them throughout the books? There are so many to choose from. The three main dudes, the women, the Forsaken, the side characters. Maybe something to consider between your other book summaries?

I really like New Spring. The practical jokes were good fun. We learn about the bizarre sexual customs. We get to know Moiraine, Lan and Siuan. It makes the rest of the WoT make sense. I reread it two weeks ago for the third time. It's underrated in my opinion.

I want to thank you for all the time and effort you put into these videos! It’s a pleasure to watch! I have one request though. Is there any way that you could turn up the gain when recording? I download and listen to these at work, but it’s very loud so I can rarely hear what you are saying.

I think this came out originally before the final 3 books, right? I never ended up reading it until after reading the complete series, but I don't know if I would have enjoyed reading it during the rest of the series. The parts of these characters that are explored are unnecessary as far as appreciating them in the full series, and I think only takes away from the way the characters are developed in the series proper. I don't think Lan being the long lost king was necessarily the best kept secret of the series, but it certainly wasn't the openly-discussed plot piece that it was in New Spring. I think Lan's storyline is one of the most interesting of all the simple character backgrounds in the series. It's very straightforward, but he lives it so powerfully that you feel for him as if he had an encyclopedia of backstory. Still this book was good, for what it was, but I would definitely not recommend that anyone go out of their way to read it.

Haven't read the book yet. Taking your advise on finishing the series first. But I've one complaint: it's taken Moraine over 15 years to find Rand? I've not idea how large the wetlands are, but wouldn't she have visited every town and hamlet in 15years? . And if the Amelia Seat sent out accepted to record every newborn wouldn't she have had a starting point? The time-line just disturbs me.

Able to watch this video coz I've read this WOT book!! I read it as a beginner, having read TEOTW I was familiar with the characters. I 100% agree with you. Much filler but good writing and I really liked the backstory of Moiraine and Lan.

I guess I'm a bit late to the game however I finally read a new spring about 2 or 3 weeks ago. I never had much interest in reading a new spring when it was introduced in that Legends Anthology Book. However a few months ago they offered a new spring as a free pdf download. With the quarantine and the fact that I had a cold I decided to sit and read it. I think this novel let highlight some of the weaknesses in Jordan's writing. I could forgive the excessive detail and the bigger novels however in a 200-page short story it's Unforgivable! The story does not pick up until 138 pages in and it's only roughly 200 pages! Even after you hit that hundred 38-page mark there are still parts that are slow. There are so many other short stories or prequels Jordan could have wrote about. I myself wanted a prequel to The War of power or Hawk wing however he chose Lan and Moraine.😕😒

The post-it notes are representative of the knowledge & reading comprehension efforts necessary to appreciate a Wheel of Time novel & comprehend what goes on in it. Daniel, appropriately, comes up very short. - The book kicks off with Lan fighting the Aiel , not Moiraine in the Tower - Moiraine does not want be queen, because she doesn’t want to do all the immoral stuff that successful Cairhien monarchs have to do. - Lan does NOT want to bring the Malkieri back, or he would, but he does not want to try, because he knows that it’s hopeless and impossible. He explicitly states in his stream of consciousness that he is returning to the Borderlands on a suicide mission, and he intends to ride into the Blight and get himself killed as a martyr to the memory of Malkier - Nothing happens, except character development?! That’s EVERYTHING! What else is SUPPOSED to happen in a story? - Lan’s only ongoing relationship with a woman in this story is with Edeyn, who is NOT killed by, Merean, the Black sister. She also does not kill his whole party, since the party with which he came to Chachin was Lan, Bukama, Ryne & Moiraine. She kills one of those four, because he was tailing her. She actually recruits Ryne as a potential warder but Lan kills him. Lan and Moiraine, of course, survive to the end. Merean murders the Prince Consort of Kandor and his youngest son, as well as Edeyn’s daughter. Those two male murders are the son & husband of Queen Ethenielle, the PoV character when the Borderland rulers are introduced in “The Path of Daggers”, which might have been a nice detail to mention instead of making up a relationship that does not exist. - Merean’s murders do not leave Lan destitute, because that means “broke.” Lan is as financially well-off at the end of the book as he was at the beginning. She also does not leave him “desolate” which is what I suspect Daniel means, rather it is Edeyn who is desolate, which affords Lan the opportunity to break his ties with her and get away from her plans for him, which are remarkably similar to the Tower’s plans for Moiraine. Almost like the author put that in there as a thematic parallel or something. - Maybe if Daniel READ the DAMN STORY instead of going “meh” over every chapter that does not contain violence he would understand what is going on. Lan does not have a love story, he has a story of political intrigue and manipulation, where he is bound to a course of action he does not want to follow, by Malkieri customs and behavior. The cause of Malkier’s restoration is futile, but that’s not going to stop men from crusading into the Blight and getting themselves killed. As the heir to the throne of Malkier, Lan is duty-bound to oversee this effort and even command it. But as king of Malkier, he has a moral obligation to the well-being of his people, which requires that they forget their homeland and get on with their lives. Yet, doing that would be betraying the traditions and customs that made Malkier what it was. And Lan sees all this, but find himself constrained by the custom of carneira, to submit to the agenda of a politically ambitious woman, who has more than a passing resemblance to Sevanna of the Shaido Aiel, in her willingness to manipulate customs and traditions to carry out a revolutionary idea. New Spring refers not only to the time of year in which the story takes place, but it alludes to beginnings. It is the beginning of Lan’s & Moiraine’s partnership, and their new careers and their mission to find the Dragon Reborn. It features both of them breaking away from others’ plans to use them and escaping from the doomed power structure of the world that will have to fall when the Dragon Reborn comes. Regarding the world-building, we learn a lot about Malkier culture and the Borderlands. We put a face on the family of Queen Ethenielle. We learn about the test for Aes Sedai and the daily life of a sister in the Tower, and the experience of a new sister joining the Tower under normal circumstances. We also learn a lot of things about how Moiraine pulls off a number of minor feats in the early books which don’t really match up with knowledge the Wondergirls get of the One Power. And we learn about Moiraine and Lan, two of the most opaque characters with the most obscure origins in the story. We learn where they came from and why they undertook the mission and partnership that brought them into contact with Rand and Egwene and Nynaeve and the rest. That’s pretty damn significant for a story that started out as a novella in a fantasy anthology (“Legends” edited by Robert Silverberg), before being expanded to novel length.

Wasn't that the novel Jordan put out roundabout when he found out he was sick/ terminal? I always looked at the novel reflecting that...he was beginning to accept what was to be and looking for someone to finish his work. Imagine having to do that...deal with this huge thing in your personal life, yet still be so passionate that you created, that even facing death, he laid plans to see it finished..that story in itself reflects in this book I think...in that it wasn't very interwoven or deep as the other works..but still very much "a beginning"...dude literally "sheathed his sword" I believe, when he found Brandon to ensure "an ending". This is my favorite series of books, even Tolkien, and that's because I connected more with the characters. I had to wait...now I've given my 14 year old Son my originals...they measure over 6 feet high when they were stacked..not counting repeats or replacements for paperbacks literally read until they've fallen apart.
