Mat defeating the golam was probably one of my favorite scenes in the entire series. It was an incredibly Mat thing to do, and it was overwhelmingly triumphant. The sense of danger was real, the awkward mix of terror and confidence in Mat was deeply moving, and the boot-kick into the abyss, after Mat had been talking up the importance of a good pair of boots... simply perfect.

I love how he used something that was set up previously. We knew skimming platforms worked in that way because we've seen an Aiel fall off before. The setup goes way back and it's great.

You didn't mention Noal sacrificing himself and also being Jain Farstrider. I think that is worth a mention. And for me the book ended with Lan and his army charging trollocs in Tarwin's Gap, not the armies gathering thing.

I thought the Perrin standoff/trial was really tense. It was such a relief for all that Whitecloak tension that started way back in books 1 and 2 to be finally resolved, and I thought it was handled well.

In book 5 Moraine leaves a letter for Thom, and it's hinted that it was romantically intentioned based on their time in Tear.

hard disagree on your assessment of perrins storyline. he is awesome in this book. yea the trial could have been solved probably with more conversations. but i feel like that’s par for the course with the whole series. people often have problems with each other that could likely be solved via a conversation over dinner. instead they barely talk at all. Perrins storyline overall in this book is, IMO the best storyline of the book

The big Perrin/Galad conflict reduced to one long sentence, totally sidestepping Perrin's forging of his epic hammer, not to mention it being the first power-wrought weapon to be made since what, the breaking? That would not have any consequence whatsoever I am sure. ;-) I feel I really have to put the hammer down on this one............... :-P

Hey Daniel, I just wanted to drop by and tell you how much I appreciate you having done all of these recap videos for Wheel of Time. I dropped off the Wheel of Time after book 10, right before Robert died. I was disappointed at the time that the series would never be finished. Years later I learned that it series was getting completed and decided to pick it up. I tried a couple of times to start book 11 but every time was lost and couldn’t remember who was what. I tried the WoT chapter recaps I found on a wiki site but they were way too long to read. And then I stumbled upon your videos. You brought me back up to speed after so many failed. Another great resource was sites.ugcs.caltech.edu/~karlh/cgi-bin/wot.cgi, which provides recaps of characters story arcs per book, without spoilers. I’m about to start the final book now and finish this journey I started 16 years ago and I wouldn’t have done it without your help. Thank you so much for your hard work. I’m going to jump im the book right after refreshing my memory with this video.

The whole Perrin subplot wasn't amazing but like I love Perrin so much that I'm just like "yay! Perrin!" Also I don't think you talked about it (which makes sense, if wasn't particularly important) but at the beginning of the book Rand and Tam meet up again and he's zen Rand now so it's a really sweet moment. That was always my favorite part of the series.

Great summary and adding that Egwene al'Vere plot element of confessing her love to Gawyn Trakand after he saves her from being murdered in her sleep. Then taking her on as a warder is worth adding to the summary IMO.

I respectfully disagree. I loved Perron's trial and his reconciliation with Galad. I liked how straight forward it was and the understanding they were able to have. This was my favourite book of the series I think. Good pace and events.

One problem, and I know I'm coming at this a little late in the game. Perrin's punishment isn't just to pay reparations. He also has to fight with all of his might at the Last Battle (granted, that was what he was going to do, anyway, but it is specifically part of the punishment Galad gives him).

Before I watch this I wanna say that I've enjoyed this routine that I've been on the past two months since starting the Wheel of Time. After about the third book I started watching this summary series after finishing each book. I'm sad to get to the end...

It was 2 a.m when I read chapters 48, 49. Those two Aviendha chapters. You know what I'm talking about. I've never read something so hunting in my entire existence. Knowing that every little choice of Aviendha'a sons led to that poor girl, heir to the Dragon Reborn, being shot by the Seanshan... And back in time, until Aviendha'a Daugher... At a certain point, while reading about the little girl surviving the attack at the last Aiel stronghold, I said "the Dragon Wall is there? In age of legends? How could Brandon san...". And then I realized it was the future. And then I realized, I did not witness the defeat of the Aiel people. I watched them being cancelled from memory. The first girl Aviendha sees in the future, just hoping for some garbage to feed herself, probably 100 years after the Last Battle, not even knowing about the glory of her people, the glory of the Aiel name... Just damning her name, just damning her being an Aiel. It hurt on so many levels. It hurt that Rand used the Aiel like weapons... But mostly, it hurt so much because I've always thought Aviendha's chapters about the future of the Aiel people were a waste of pages, just a way to give here something to do... And I was like Rand, in doing that: the Aiel were weapons also for me. Only that. Those two chapters are the best I've ever read. And the worst... Because they are so hunting. I didn't manage to sleep that night, if not 3 hours later.

I was similarly up late when I got to those chapters, I got that she was seeing the future in the second vision when the miner says "The Raven Empress, may she always draw breath". Those chapters were super fascinating, I want to see more details about that timeline.

About how Matt got rid of the Gholam, Gateways automatically kill any shadowspawn, so falling through the skimming gateway actually does kill it, even if it also adds the falling for ever to it.

IIRC Rand says that Gholums are the only one that can go through gateways and that they are lucky Aginor created so few of them

A little late, but with all the previous shadowspawn that entered gateways, they were immediately vaporized, which isn't what happened to the Gholam. So it's safe to say the only way they got rid of it was because it's now stuck presumably falling forever

The Gholams were unique among Shadowspawn. As they weren't entirely artificial but rather altered humans. That's why they can use the gateways and trolleys and such can't. Trollocs are basically magic robots not actual living beings.

He disappeared north of the Blasted Lands in 981 NE. Graendal knew his real identity and picked him because of his fame, and later on she used a very subtle Compulsion on him and sent him to Ebou Dar to find a cache there and spy on Jaichim Carridin, Falion Bhoda and Ispan Shefar. SPOILERS FOR THE LAST BOOK. DON'T READ Its probably not fair to Sanderson but the books took a much lighter turn in the last three novels. For instance, I felt nothing for the deaths of the few minor characters that die. Too safe. Egwene is the only principal character to die and her death is a silly affair for so many reasons. Plus Rand getting a new body makes his sacrifices and death super fucking duper inconsequential. In fact, that's the problem. The story ends consequence free and its Rands funeral and not Egwenes. Nobody even cares she died. Bah! I gotta stop there.

Still, this spoiler leaves a lot out and if I wrote the last book, it wouldn't even have happened like it did in the final book. It was like, reading the dumbest chain of events leading up to a completely unrealistic moment and then immediately forgotten. I hate to have spoiled this to you but as I sit here and apologize for the spoiler, I'm irritated about the book again. I take a lot of issue with the last book and almost dont want to count everything that happens in it as canon.
