Today we are visiting Wichita Kansas. This is a big old American city sitting right smack in the middle of the USA. I had a great time looking all around through this place. I ran into the stunning Frank Lloyd Wright Allen House. Woah what a stunner. I am sure I missed a lot too. If you know of some great places to check out, let me know.

Ar- Kansas River not Arkansaw, people living here in Wichita will take offense and correct you as I'm doing, lol. First "castle" is The Scottish Rite building. second one is the old Sedgwick County courthouse that is now a museum. The steam engine is a train museum. When you were looking at the grain elevator, the tall wall is actually an elevated train track which is part of the track that steam engine is sitting on. You skirted past a lot of cool buildings. I heard myself say "Wait, go back!" or "Not that street!" "No, turn there!" lol

@TheStreet I remember when I lived in Wichita I had a coworker who was also from out of state. He said it was wrong to pronounce it Ar-kansas instead of Arkansaw. I said "who gets to decide that? I think people can pronounce names the way they want." Wichita was a nice place to live. It was so flat that you could go everywhere easily on a bicycle.

We lived in Wichita 2 yrs ( 1980 till 83 ) loved it . Beautiful to see wide open spaces & sunsets . Returned in 2003 on a trip , stayed @ castle on river .

Wichita is a great place to live. It is a large small town. A well kept secret. It is not for cosmopolitans. It is quaint with a great history. People are friendly. Thanks for this video. I am glad I found it on KZbin.

In case you ever do an update, Wichita North High School is quite interesting, also on Douglas west of downtown you ALMOST made it to the original NuWay sandwich shop building which I am quite sure you would love for its classic small cafe look. Wichita historic Cowtown Museum would be fun to explore if street view gets inside there.

You saw the grain storage. Cargil has a big flour mill here. If you're going to tour Wichita you gotta go down on West Douglas and stop in at Hatman Jacks. Get you a good Hat. Say howdy to the Old Santa Claus looking Guy sweeping the sidewalks with his push cart. He's a friendly sort. South East is older. Houses are smaller. North east and north west are new, both homes and business districts. The down town business areas are called Old Town and Delano. (Dalaino) Hatman Jack's is in Dalano. The old man with the push cart sweeping sidewalks? He's a fiction writer. He has a new book coming out for Christmas on Amazon. "Murphy, The Prince & The Deer Who Could Fly" Look it up as Thanksgiving draws near. It should be out by then. He says it's a pretty good little read. He has a novel that features Wichita due out in the spring. "The Angel Who Rode Grayhound" The old man says the things that will change your life are the people you meet and the books you read. Grew up in Wichita during the winter we didn't get much snow until January but the temperature would drop down to the teens and sometimes below zero

Lots of parking, especially at apartments. The Orpheum Theater is where I saw the Batman movie with Adam West. It gets very cold in the winter; but the summers are great. It's pronounced Ar-Kansas river in Kansas. 😄

'The Swope Lofts' Those are apartments. Had a great time in one on the top floor back in '89. LOL. I just showed up not knowing anyone and they let me in. All I can remember is AC/DC music and staying up till Sunday dawn. LOL.

Hence the nickname "Air capital of the world". Boeing is still here but has taken a huge hit along with many airline companies due to covid they have laid off thousands of workers. Wichita is a great city...and yes its Ar-Kansas river. 🤣

The funny thing is you pointed out how ribbett computers is doing well and it has now been closed and turned into something else, BTW the quick trip across the road from that store always has something going on there, its a super busy area. And the first neighborhood you mentioned is very close to some huge 3-4 story houses, you got a bit of a glimpse of some of them

Boeing was bought out by Spirit. We are known as the Air Capital City. Frank Lloyd Write built a lot of buildings here in Wichita. Cessna and Spirit have runways because they have to fly their planes to check them out. Old Town is a great place. They have some good restaurants there. You need some pics of our old courthouse and museums uptown. We have some amazing architect.

That outdoor market you keep hitting in old town was the Saturday farm and art market. There's several around the town. You ever come here try and go on a mural hunt. Plenty of pretty ones and some very old ones if you know where to look. The biggest mural is on the grain elevators near 21st and Broadway. You can see it from I 135.

Nice tour! BTW...it's the R-Kansas' River! You never say Arkansas River when you're in Kansas! The name of their civic center 'Century Two', built in the 1970's, was to symbolize Wichita's second century! Wichita is known as the Air Capital of the World' with major aircraft manufacturers like Beechcraft, Cessna and for many years Boeing. There's also an air force base in Wichita. The Old Cowtown Museum is an authentic 1870's western town that is right out of an episode of 'Gunsmoke'! You kinda skipped over the towering 'Keeper of the Plains' sculpture of an Indian Chief (17:00) where the Arkansas and Little Arkansas River meet. It is Wichita's iconic Native-American heritage figure that is like nothing you've ever seen before esp. when lit up at night! I went to college and was on the radio (KFDI) here in the 1970s. (I last visited in 2013.) it's a clean city with lots of parks and surprisingly 'big-city' attractions.

You missed the library designed by Frank Loyd Wright. Right next to the second twin castle you found. There are also buildings of his at WSU.

@@chrispile3878 John Hickman designed Century II. I’m 98% sure you were being sarcastic but still wanted the right info out there. Mr Hickman deserves it. And I’m fairly sure that Wright wasn’t a Brutalist designer. Yet the Allen-Lamb house in College hill was actually designed by Wright and it was never mentioned.

I know my comment is a year late but Eisenhower wasn't born in Kansas nor has he lived in Wichita, during his childhood he lived up in Abilene Ks. On a side note some of the major Aircraft Manufactures were founded or are based here such as Lear, Beech, Cessna & Stearman or at the very least their founders were either born here or lived here.

Natasha Miller we just moved here July 3rd. Learned quickly about warm summers. Thankfully our place has amazing AC. Heading into winter we got lots of stuff for making layers. And waterproof boots for when it snows.
