Hello, very much enjoyed your presentation and I was definitely knee-deep in the Alt-Country genre and movement as a hardcore fan and show attendee in Chicago during the period you highlighted, late 80's-early 2000's. I not only own just about every band/record you mentioned and displayed, but also saw most of them live in venues like the beloved Lounge-Axe, Shubas, the Metro, the Hideout, the Vic Theatre, Empty Bottle and others. However there was a gross oversight in your list and I'm more than a bit surprised because they're one of the obvious focal points of the genre and that's Whiskeytown. Their first 2 records, Faithless Street and Strangers Almanac are touchstones of the movement and Ryan Adams' solo debut, Heartbreaker, in 2000, on Chicago's own Bloodshot Records, was considered an instant Classic and has only grown in stature since. Anyway, thanks for highlighting a genre and an era in music that is still near and dear to my heart and given me an infinite amount of pleasure. Peace

Great video about the music I love best, but I would add The Bottle Rockets to your pantheon. Killer band.

I'm only about 19 minutes in to your video. But I've had to keep pausing it for a few days to go down the music trail you've sent me on. I'm so happy I've stumbled upon this video by chance. It's really given me some great new things to listen to and learn about. I don't know why I haven't heard about lucinda Williams until now, but jesus, her songs are amazing and I've just been playing them non stop for past few days haha.

Great showcase. I have some of these from the CD era in my collection but now I want to continue on with several of the artists I’ve vinylized. I might jump in and follow 🎸🥁😎

This is so informative, I've been looking for videos about alt-country all over youtube, and no one seems to talk about it, and here I come across your channel! Thank you so much. Looks like your channel in general is one worth giving a closer look at, which I intend to do. P. S. Greetings from Russia

All great records. I've seen all these bands you've mentioned many times. It was a great scene and I try to get out and support the ones still doing it whenever they get to Houston.

Hi there. I just stumbled across your channel. Where have you been? More to the point, where have I been? Anyway, I might be 8 months late, but I'm here now. I love all the bands you showed, although practically my entire collection of Alt. Country is on CD. I'm soooo envious. Great to see you showing Marah and The Gourds. Here in the UK I'd had enough of the whole Britpop nonsense, and was always looking for something different. In 1998 Uncut magazine came out with a cover-mounted CD called Sounds of the New West. While I was already familiar with Gram Parsons and The Flying Burrito Brothers, Lambchop and Vic Chesnutt, it introduced me to a host of incredible bands; Calexico, The Handsome Family, Sixteen Horsepower, Silver Jews, Hazeldine, The Pernice Brothers and more. This was a seminal compilation for me, there was no looking back. My true love affair was with Bloodshot Records, out of Chicago. The compilations of 'insurgent country' they put out were so important to me, and I would buy practically everything they released. Alt. Country was like a gateway drug for me. It opened up my mind to country music, first through Country Rock and Cow Punk, but eventually proper hard-core country and bluegrass. Great video. Thanks - Hedley P.S. Please don't think I'm stalking you if you see more comments from me turning up on your videos in the next week or so 🙂

Hahaha. Please, comment away! I have almost all the Bloodshot stuff - great, great label, but they've had some issues of late - not sure if you've read. I love Sixteen Horsepower!

@@TheLongCut1 Yes, I was following that dodgy business at Bloodshot. Not good at all. Unfortunately there are some people who use their position to exploit vulnerable people. I still haven't managed to listen to any Ryan Adams recently. I'm not sure I'll ever be able to enjoy his music again. I know there are some people who manage to separate the artist from their actions, but I'm not one of them.

Golden Smog is ‘Travelling Wilburys’ but alt-country. Great records, Great round up! I just wanted to bring up Pizza Deliverance Drive-by Truckers, Blue Rodeo - Outskirts, Gillian Welch Revival. Some lesser spoken of gems of what I consider the alt-country world.

Are you trying to entice me to write a novel in your comment section? This was very well done. A video (or series of videos) that I've always considered making, but I love the music of this period so much that I've been scared to do it out of fear of not doing it justice. I'm sure you're going to get hit up with comments about bands you didn't mention. The only one that I thought you would talk about but didn't was The Bottle Rockets. Since they were right there with Uncle Tupelo and The Jayhawks. I was going to say 6 String Drag, but then you mentioned them right at the end. I'm super jealous of that V-Roys LP. That reissue got past me, and sold out in a blur. I've always been aware of Slobberbone but never dove in. Marah was another band I never got into. I remember when The Gourds' cover of Gin and Juice was one of the most popular downloads on Napster. Ha. I never checked out their discography either. Anyway... great video Chris. I will be talking about 6 String Drag one day as I have a series of videos (of which I've only done one) on North Carolina bands. Last thing... I know it's called the Vinyl Community but you're allowed to show CDs. We all do it. :)

If I had made this video, I'd have added Dylan's Basement Tapes and almost all of Neil Young's stuff prior to 1980 to the influences of alt.country. And I would have mentioned Lambchop and Freakwater. But that's just me. Other than that, I fully agree with you.

A very good overview, thanks for doing it. I think Car Wheels was the best album put out in the 90s regardless of genre. I didn't realize that Jason and the Scorchers and Steve Earle were considered Alt country, saw Jason and Scorchers a couple of times and have most of Earle's stuff. Most of these bands came along when I raising a family so I never got deep into the music, but always liked the Jayhawks. I will be on the lookout for these artists that I was unfamiliar with so thinks for the intros. And my dawg Chester said to tell your dawg hey. Take Care, Elliott

Who is Alt. Country? Uncle Tupelo is? Whiskeytown... no? V-Roys is? Drive-By Truckers... no?
