A common argument we hear these days is that Colin Kaepernick isn't good enough to play in the NFL. This is absolutely not true.

@Ben Schocket-Greene, I don't think pointing out that Luck retired of his own free will is a criticism of Luck. He just belongs in a different category. He's a gray dot like Locker and Orton, albeit an objectively superior gray dot. If Luck decided he wanted to play again there would be 15, probably 20 teams that would take him in a heartbeat. Kaepernick wanted to sign and nobody signed him.

Those guys minus Cam Newton are at best backups today. None of them are starting for the same team and most of them were declining veterans, backups, or rookies. Suprisingly people are ok with noncontroversial rookies and backups not being good, but don't want to sink starting money into a mediocre (This video should just admit he is mediocre as they pretty much prove that is what he was) QB that will have a negative impact on their profitability. You think Jameis WInston was running around asking teams for starting money?
@techneip5449
@techneip5449 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheBanshee90 yeah he was 28th in the list now if we do some quick math there are 32 teams and he was the 28th highest in NYP/PA. So 32 - 28 = 4 so (assuming that no backup is better) he is the 4th best. Now if I were an organization I would not hirer a controversial QB who in all likelihood is worse than my QB right now. He never made a probowl and never had an astounding season that would be worth the lose of profit to get him. He was an aging duel threat, who was injured and benched before he was cut.

of the QBs he was better than in 2016 that weren't rookies, Cam Newton is the only one that is a starting QB and he was cut from the team he was playing on... Of the QBs he was worse than You have Tyrod Taylor Tank Commander Carson Palmer and Eli Manning Declining Veterans who are retired and players Like Trevian Siemons or Alex Smith (Traded), Phillip Rivers (Cut), Andy Dalton (Cut), Ryan Tannehil (Cut)... So that tells me something about Kaep he wasn't that good. He was better than career backups and rookie QBs and a handful of QBs who had statistically bad years compared to their career.

For evidence that he would be a great backup you can just look to the guy with the same passer rating Andy Dalton. He will make a great backup for the Cowboys at least I think he will. Kaep just was an under average starter who could have been a great backup. But wholly honestlyI think he would have set back the 49ers. This is not due to him being bad but to Jimmy G being good-ish. Jimmy G fits the scheme the 49ers have like a hand in a glove and I think they really would have been worse off if they kept him. Kaep would have been a great backup like Andy Dalton

Jon isn't saying "Kap is out of the league because of his protests", he's saying "of all the arguments for why he isn't in the league, his stats aren't a good excuse". There's still plenty of arguments on both sides, he's just debunking one. EDIT: I randomly rewatched this video and saw that this throwaway comment I made when I was 20 got… some attention. Don’t really know why I thought Jon wasn’t saying “Kap is out of the league for protesting” cuz that was 100% the point. I must’ve just latched onto the stats part and ignored the bigger picture. Live and learn, that’s the lesson.

He also showed a running qb that was nowhere near Vick that is aging at 29 and was on a downward trend for 4 years and spiked a 90 for five games. So with his aging legs (running backs over 30 don’t make it too long) he’s probably getting worse and slower

if the green bay packers miss the playoffs, yes, they should feel really stupid Kaep wouldve kept Green Bay afloat until Rodgers came back. They still might make it, but all they needed was one more win in their previous games and they would be in a really good spot right now. They've got basically nothing out of the QB position since rodgers went down. Mediocre would've ensured them a wild card spot. instead it was about politics

Thatguy Man You have to actually watch I guy play. Stats can give you a good idea of how good they are, but they can be very deceiving. You don't know how much of his stats are compiled in garbage time at the end of games. You also don't know how many bad plays he gets away with due to his receivers bailing him out or defenders making bad plays. Many people also like to pick certain stats that make players look good, but leave out the ones that don't. There was a little bit of that in this video I also do agree with what you said before. Even if he is good, his style of play doesn't necessarily fit well with many teams.

Alot of cherry picking going on here. Kap has 30 pics to 72 tds. Thats nearly 1 pic for every 2 tds. Definitely not a good stat. He was benched when he was already haveing a bad season with 6tds and 5 ints. Again, not w good stat and completely justified. He didnt start protesting till he was already benched. Kapernick started out as a good qb but his numbers got worse every year. Thats why looking at career stats will do no good. Just look at his final year to get the picture
@scottdrone-silvers5179
@scottdrone-silvers5179 4 жыл бұрын
Billy Fontane yes, you are doing a lot of cherry picking. Like ignoring the fact that Kap had 3 surgeries before the season. Like ignoring the fact that he didn’t play because of the Blaine Gabbert experiment - yet despite taking over 30 sacks in 12 games, still had a 16:4 Td/Int ratio. Btw - the 5Td/6Int numbers were Gabberts’, not Kap’s. Ignoring the fact that the team sucked, he still managed to throw for over 2200 yards and was second on the team in rushing yards. Maybe YOU should look at the actual numbers and come up with another lame excuse.
@billyfontane846
@billyfontane846 4 жыл бұрын
Scott Drone-Silvers I looked at all his stats too. Kap was a good qb, but he got worse and worse every year. Im a Seahawks fan, i watched both games against him every single year and he definitely regressed. You could tell. He turned over the ball way too much and did not produce. Sure the niners as a team werent great, but look at the case of jimmy g. He took a 3 win team and made it a juggernaut. So being on a bad team doesnt excuse being a bad qb
@billyfontane846
@billyfontane846 4 жыл бұрын
Scott Drone-Silvers Also 2016 the niners were 1-10 under him. He had 16tds to 13 turnovers. I absolutely believe him being benched was justified. This video is cherry picking because its looking at his career stats and not the ones from the year he was bench. U think the niners cosching staff cared about how good he was a few years ago when he was tanking their team?? Absolutely not

5:33 I like the last chart. Three years later 7 of the QBs that were better than Kaep are no longer in the league. And of the 26 QBs that were worse than Kaep, 21 are not starting. The other 5 Cam Newton (MVP caliber that was hurt) Joe Flacco and Ryan Fitzpatrick, who both lost their starting jobs last year. Carson Wentz, and Jared Goff who were rookies. Update: Wentz led the Eagles to the playoffs, and while he was injured, was instrumental in their SB. Meanwhile, Goff led the Rams to a SB despite being meh but couldn't win it. Cam is pretty injured and is probably done for real. Fitz retired. Flacco is backup for the Jets - he played a few games with Zach out and won one. Wentz looks not good on the Commanders. And Goff looks passable on the Lions. So, the rookies are the only ones starting, and Flacco is the only one not a rookie still in the league. Kaep could've easily been starting for, say, the Seahawks or the Browns right now. But, you know. Edit: Well, maybe not Seahawks with Geno balling out. But what about the Jets? They went to a 4th-string in one game. Or Dolphins, who maybe could have used him over a 7th-round rookie. Even his 49ers could've used him, just because they needed anybody in that championship game. If he was still in the league, there's a decent chance he saw at least a little play. But instead, no, 'tis no to be.

I completely understand where u r coming from with all the passing stats, but I think something important wasn't mentioned... a lot of kaeps passes were opened up off of play action and his threat to run. That being said, the read option style offense that he thrived on has kinda been figured out. For every scrambling QB that has been consistently successful (cam and Wilson) there have been countless others that fell out of favor since defenses actually realized how to stop zone option. Also, Kaep emerged in the height of the read option which further confused defenses. Just something that might go beyond the numbers

JETS- why would they sign a QB when there franchise QB should be back by week 5. Saints- they traded for teddy bridgewater and regularly use taysom hill. it would be a waste of a trade steelers-they drafted mason rudolph for a reason. they also got rid of atonio brown because of the media attention he brought. why would they bring in someone who does the same thing as brown. it would also be a waste of a draft pick. dolphins-they traded for young QB josh rosen. he hasn't started yet why would they give up on him now. Jaguars-they too drafted a QB for a reason and he was solid in his first two games. every thing you mentioned can be dissolved to either a waste of a trade, draft pick and money since there coming back soon. please look into these things before you write them.

Kaepernick's successful seasons were those when a new offensive scheme hadn't yet been countered by defensive coordinators. Kaepernick declined year over year as the style of offense for which he is best suited was deciphered and phased out of the league. You'll also notice that he didn't complete either of his final two seasons without injury. The Zone Read and scramble-first style of play for QBs was a failed experiment - the position is too valuable for the QB to take risks with his body.

Alright now imma debunk your "This guy" starters. In 2016 Jacoby Brissett was traded for to be a back up not a full fledged starters for years to come (even now hes only signed to a 2 year deal. Cam Newton came off of a 2015 super bowl appearance and mvp season so that's a given the Panthers wouldn't get Kaep. Tom Savage did have the starting job but at the same time record wise the Texans were doing better. Flacco has the job for his ring and being in a tough division with decent receivers. Cutler was with Miami who waited on Tannehill to come back. Bortles came off a decent season and saw it as a rough season. Case Keenum and Jared Goff both were with Jeff Fischer and you dont wanna give up on a first round pick early. Brock was given so much money by the texand so they shot themselves in the foot. Paxton was a 1st round pick who never really got to play. Your basis is that all these QBs didnt do anything but have starting jobs I mean how is that different from Colin? Sure a high QB rating is nice but when your numbers are only a step up from even Joe flacco in scoring what gonna change? Even with the awful defense in 11 games he averaged 1.8 TDs a game but he did have a game where all 4 of his INTs were in and a game he threw for 4 TDs so his averages are inflated cause of a few good games but really he was inconsistent. Just a step up doesnt mean you're good cause once more Dak was a step down from Romo and they still have the same look from each others first few season. Colin isnt signed cause no one wants a step they want a leap like with the Niners getting Jimmy g that's a leap

Lets see you left out since 2013 as a starter Kaep is 11-24. Between 2014 and 2015 his QBR dropped from 98.1 to 78.5 until 2016 where he went 1-10 and had that terrific 4 yd game against The Bears. Hes a lifetime starting record is 28-30. Yea he may have a good QBR but he just hasn't been able to win games. Lets see the Chargers that year Let up 423 points the next closest to the 9ers besides Cleveland. The Chargers put up 409 points only 19 more than the 9ers. Put this in perspective, Rivers QBR was 86.7 and he went 5-11, Kaep 90.7 went 1-11, Gabbert 1-4 as a Starter All in 2016. I mean yea the 9ers were bad defensively but so were other teams. and clearly career wise Kaep has only gone backwards since 2013. Yes his best year was in 2016 QBR wise but win loss it was his worst year. QBs lead teams.

My argument has never been "he's not good enough." It's always been "he's not good enough to overcome his high asking price (especially for his downslide years between 2012 and 2015), and for the waves he'll create for the team." The reason a lot of other quarterbacks were given a chance before Colin Kaepernick is because they were already on the team, or cheap enough for the team to take a risk. It's all about risk analysis. There are only three conditions to consider. I'll label each one with a capital letter, while the lower case will be the exact opposite. (A) Kaepernick performs well enough (B) Media attention is an impediment (C) Salary cap is fine This means we have eight possible outcomes: ABC, aBC, AbC, abC, ABc, aBc, Abc, abc. In seven out of eight of those outcomes, there is some negative side-effect of hiring Kaepernick. Obviously, not every outcome is equally likely (ie: Kaepernick will likely do well enough on most teams), but then again, not each condition is equally valued among teams either. A team not concerned with media attention might be strapped for cash, so hiring Kaepernick will result in cutting a huge chunk of a trained team. A team with a lot of money might already have a reasonable option, so "well enough" might be Brady levels of performance. And a team not interested in a strong performance is...the Browns. (Sorry, had to do that, Cleveland fans.) Ultimately, there's too much risk.

Actually, all basic stats are bad, but I understand that you can't really compare film, and judge every QB based film because it's just not very accessible. The average passer rating is much higher now than it was in the 80's or 90's because of much more advanced offensive schemes, and less leeway for DB's in coverage. I know you used some advanced stats too, which were better but they can still have the same issues. Anyway, like I said, I do think Kap should be in the league because he is an above avearge QB, but using base statistics isn't really a good measure of how they actually played.

Even If we ignore all the variables that go into a game, and just use stats like passer rating to judge a QB, you can't tell me it's not flawed. Imagine a QB who is 20/30 for 330 yards with 0 TDs and 1 INT. 3 times he completes a pass inside the 5 yard line, but the team decides to run the ball in for 3 TD's but they only averaged 3.1 yards per run. The interception was a dropped pass from a reciever after a good pin-point throw. In total, he leads his team to 28 offensive points. The QB has a passer rating of 89.6, which is a little above league average but he definitely played better than that. Now Imagine a Qb who is also 20/30 but for 156 yards, 3 Td's and 1 INT. He only averaged 5.2 yards per pass, and his team scored 21 offensive points, averaging 5.5 yards per run. His Interception was an overthrown ball in a key situation. His passer rating is 98.8 which is "very good" even though his play was subpar. You might think that stuff like this would even out, but it gennerally doesn't, and this is just base stats with a little bit of context. None of the things I mentioned accounted for teams, scheme or other things of contextual importance in football. Even with base stats you can see how flawed QB rating is. Stuff like Yards, Td's and INT'S also don't have any context.

Interesting video! The NFL is definitely... weird sometimes, especially with stats. Last year, Jefferson and Cousins were leading in multiple stats despite not only losing a lot of games, but also were both out for injuries and STILL were holding the lead for those offensive stats for a few weeks which is crazy... I see why people including myself love sports because there are so many metrics and stats to pour over and sometimes, there isn't necessarily a correlation between stats and "doing good" whatever that might entail... These players usually start slowing down in their late 20s/Early 30s so its always uncharted waters for performance, injury, etc. There is obviously also no 'I' in team. Sometimes you'll have phenomenal players, with awful chemistry that leads to puzzling outcomes in games. This is especially true now, but the standard is constantly rising for these athletes (especially QBs) and honestly being "decent" isn't good enough anymore and I feel like this applies to Colin. Obviously most teams want to avoid any controversy regardless of the issue, but him being a "decent" QB while comparing other starting QB's with worse stats isn't necessarily a good metric to go off of (but I know this video is purely talking about the faults of the stats argument for why colin was blackballed so I'm not hating on you or anything). It's kind of a crazy rabbit hole that could be debated for centuries, but I also want to point out that (SOME) of his supporters seem to be a bit delusional. To be fair, he did go to the SB, had some good wins, etc, but even today i've seen people still calling for him to play again, acting like he was Brady Jr. I think you could probably make a list of thousands of names of "decent" professional athletes that had their careers come to an end earlier than expected... Lots of players and QBs go to the superbowl then completely fall off... (I know there were other problems on the team, but the 49s went from the superbowl to a 2-14 season in 3 years... that is a clear indication you need to revamp the team asap lol) It just opens up a can of worms with that and it all becomes hypothetical at this point, and one thing is for certain, these teams will never bank on hypotheticals to ensure their team's victory. Great topic to discuss and thank you!

Remember, the same people who don't think Kaepernick is good enough to play also tend to think Tim Tebow was.

I mean, he got benched twice last year. In favor of... Blaine Gabbert. So yeah, he was really hard to watch, the whole team was as much as I like them tbh, but kaepernick just isn't that good

Why do people prop him up like he is a good QB in last season he had 2200 yards and 12 tds those aren’t good stats by any means he was on pace for maybe 3000 yards and 16 touchdowns and that’s if they let him play the whole season just because he was good like 4 years ago doesn’t mean he is now he is an average back up at best and most teams don’t want the negative publicity he brings along with him.

It’s almost shocking to me to hear someone who shares my accent, and he’s actually willing to look at things objectively,… Look at the numbers and the abject truths. IV never watched a NFL game, and I’m honestly not a sports fan, I’ve actually never owned a television. But I really enjoy your content. And it’s refreshing to hear somebody Who sounds like me, but isn’t a complete and utter disappointment to the human race. Don’t misunderstand me… It’s not like they’re all racist or something or they all consider themselves far right… A lot of the folks around here in north Georgia and metro Atlanta I consider salt of the earth folks. Because they would help someone in a bad situation… In the color of their skin wouldn’t even register in their mind. But for some reason when they talk politics and social issues, they sure as hell don’t come off as levelheaded, educated, or caring folks. And it’s killing me because I love my little corner of the United States… But even the ones who are decent folks and down to earth..,. stick with the talking points, Refuse to change their opinion… And yup.... you guessed it......even though they consider themselves educated and headed… They fall on the political right on EVERY SINGLE issue that matters. Regardless of the facts or how the numbers can disprove their opinions in seconds.. I just don’t know what to do anymore honestly

Kaepernick didn’t want back into the nfl. Was he forced out? Maybe. Was he THAT good? No. But ultimately when you’re told to show up to an nfl tryout and decide to blow it off and set up your own, that’s not the type of player you want on your team

You left out important stats. Like The average league season yardage is 3500. Colin only averages 2300yds a season. Or how the league average is 25TD a season, and he only throws 18TD a season. Or his completion percentage is 3% less than average. He might have a high rating, if yards per attempt and not throw interceptions. But he still is very inaccurate. You know, which is what a QB needs to be to throw the ball. Basically your numbers say a QB who throws 4 long passes a game but miss the other 6 passes completely with zero TDs, is better than a QB who throws 8 short passes, 1 int, and 1TD. Sorry, I'll pick the short pass guy and send the other guy home.

Convenient that you didn't list how many games he played from a guy expressing criticism for leaving out important stats. Kaepernick has only started all 16 games in two seasons out of his six seasons in the NFL. In the other four seasons, he had zero (2011), seven (2012), eight (2015), and eleven (2016) starts total. This is why his average is so low and its dishonest of you to take that average out of context. Secondly, regarding your point on passing number, Jon's numbers have a floor unlike yours. He set a lower cutoff so that statistical anomalies associated with lack of sample size are disregarded. And as a side note, most starting QBs throw more than 10 passes in a game. So your scenario isn't very representative of reality.
