I firmly believe that having less choices most often leads to more creativity. Too many choices leads to overthinking things and not getting on with it. Hence, the perfection of this instrument, in my book.
@benjaminfowler45133 жыл бұрын
I agree, for a while I chased pedals and guitars with as many knobs and features as possible and usually would end up just constantly changing shit around because it all sounded good but I couldn't decide which setting sounded BEST lol so it was paralyzing. Now I'm much happier with an esquire and phasing out the overly complicated pedals and doing more actual playing

Having more choices is okay as long as you understand these choices. A tone stack in a preamp section helps a lot as long as you understand the end sound. I wouldn't call a Telecaster "perfection" because there are obvious things that it cannot do. That said, I have been gravitating towards playing a Telecaster more and more because it's so simple and predictable. You work with the guitar more instead of trying to force the guitar to work for you.

I don't know about that 'life is too short for long youtube videos' bit, but this nearly 56 minute vid is worth every second. I'm not sure I've watched a guitar video - tele or not - that inspired this beginner guitar hack to go get a Tele as much as this 'experience'. Wow. The issue I have though is where to begin, but I really think the answer lies somewhere close to just getting off my rump, getting a basic, but good Tele, and playing. Just playing. I'm inspired, I kid you not. I mean, F me. I feel like I've wasted decades trying to put my finger on 'what was missing in life'. And what this is - is the sound of this music, like soulful tears pouring into your chest. I have chills. There's a Jason Isbell tele for sale near me. I'm making a phone call...

I’m a metal head and recently finally admitted to myself at the age of 49 that a Tele with 9.5 radius is my favorite guitar. Teles can absolutely rock and it does metal with the right pickups. That fretboard radius (9.5) allows me to play big chords that ring out and you can bend notes straight up the board without choking out the note. I’ve got an American Pro II with SD Hot Rails and it’ll spank any super strat w/EMGs. And yes, it’s still a Tele with Hot Rails although a straight up vintage Tele on hand is always a must. But in the end we know that 90% of that time resides in your fingers! But still…A Tele rocks. Great episode 🤘🏻

Great show, guys! And awesome to hear the Tim Lerch shoutout! I got my first tele this past November, a pine pro-2 in sienna burst, because I wanted something for jazz fingerstyle that would be really versatile. The neck pickup for jazz is just stellar (I usually play it through my 76 champ with an alnico Jensen speaker). Lerch was one of the people who convinced me on that front, and in that video he wasn’t even using the Charlie Christian pickups. But speaking of versatility: I was astounded by how much I liked bridge pickup - killer for rock and even metal (I’m also a metal guy, and I run my tele through a Kraken 50 head and love it).

Show idea: That Pedal Order Show. Short shows that just focus on two effects and how they interact with each other, order, tone, impedance, single coil vs humbuckers, other considerations. Some are, I think, well covered like fuzz and wah, or fuzz and drive, but phaser/fuzz, flanger/distortion, chorus/drive, and on and on. Might be able to make them 5-10 minutes each. Then you could make a playlist of them and have them be a pedal order reference you can always point to in the future.

Re: the pickups in Dan's red 63 CS Tele - you can call Fender customer support with the serial # and they'll email you a spec sheet. Based on the beveled magnets and stagger, it's likely what used to be referred to as "Custom 60s Tele" pickups in the early to mid 2000s and have since been tweaked/renamed as the "63 Telecaster Pickups." Both have approx 6.6k resistance and Alnico 2 magnets. Dan "may" be thinking of the neck DCR 7.4k-ish when he's quoting the DCR in the video. The bridge and neck pickup in a Tele use different gauge wire hence the non-intuitive DCR readings (neck higher than bridge). Either way, I have a 2005 CS 1960 Tele Custom with a similar pickup and it is indeed fantastic. 🤟

Very enjoyable as usual. Dan is certainly a Telemaster! His unbridled joy comes through and it’s really great to see. I also liked that you covered a range from obscenely expensive to really very affordable and Dan’s daughter’s Squier proved it is a great framework with just a pickup change. Be well my friends!

Damn that was beautiful! I became Tele fan in the 90's too, when first learned about electric guitars' history. Read books and magazines and stuff. That ugly duckling turned into a beaty when stared those simple lines long enough. Friends were real guitarists and strat / superstrat players, I was just a dreamer. It took until 20th century though, until got my first own Telecaster. If Strat is a Spitfire,Tele is a Hurricane. Simpler machine for brave men & women.

Dan, Dan, DAN!!! You absolutely killed it on the intro playing, running the gamut from sweet and tasty to sultry and brutal. There's no such thing as "just" an MIM. My Mexican tele has some serious growl, even without an amp.
@dowaliby13 жыл бұрын
@@benashton3691 Well, yes, absolutely, I wouldn't doubt it. The MIM guitars are fantastic, at least as good as any American (non-custom shop) Telecaster. I guess my intent wasn't clear - the "just" was meant to emphasize how great the guitar is at a comparative price point far lower than its American Counterparts. I love my Tele - best sounding and playing guitar I own (and I have Les Pauls and quite a few other premium guitars). Just picked up a Strat Player Plus MIM, too, and it's amazing.

That Bare Knuckle in the Standard sounds killer. I’ve never had a proper Tele as all my guitar heroes from my youth played Les Pauls, Super Strats and Explorers. But I suppose it’s high time to get a Tele at 51 years old.

It's crazy how your tastes change with age. When I first started playing at around age 13, it was all about "cool" looking guitars that I could show off to my friends like Jackson flying Vs, and ESPs for shredding. When I turned about 17 I began to become obsessed with Les Paul's but couldn't afford a Gibson so I went with Epiphones and Chibsons that looked exactly like the real deal (but didn't sound like it lol) at 23 I'm now liking a more balanced and dynamic sound so I now play a Strat, a Tele, and an acoustic as my main Axes.

Yep. It's not unusual to change horses as you progress in your musical journey. It will be interesting to see what you'll be playing in 25-30 years. Wouldn't surprise me if it turns out to be..(ta-da!), a Tele! Been there myself and still doing that.

Great stuff guys. If guitar was added to the Olympics, Mick and Dan would hold THE record number of (semi-professional) gold medals. Plus, every 4 years they get better, and lead the field in a way where where TPS fans would be dropped from the team. The gap is as inspiring as it is ever widening. Thanks for the proof that while pedals are great, there is no substitute for time and passion. May the road continue to rise.

First gig tomorrow night since the pandemic. My current band is very well suited to the tele sound and aesthetic, I switch to a humbucker guitar for the 2nd set. Being a strat guy, I missed the strat sound. Obvious as it sounds, a strat pickup in the neck of a tele has been a revelation. Can you guys try it (Dan's daughters squire?). Might make for a great show. Pickups in guitars not associated with them and like the D&M drive...tele with a strat pickup in the neck. Happy happy compromise.

Love this show! *had to come back and edit! * So many great guitars here. That Jason Isbell really jumped out from the crowd. Sounded great. That ASAT really sounded great too. Man, completely agree about the tone control. I'm modding all mine to take the neck pu off the tone pot. Been on my list forever - one of these days! I love it when guitars from the 50s and 60s are run through modern pedalboards/effects/OD and whatnot, that Leo Fender, Les Paul, etc, never could have imagined. Yesterday, I was watching some dropped-D metal coming out of an old, beat-up 60s SG. Love it! Talk about standing the test of time. I just added the new j.masics Tele. Really diggin' it a lot. Neck is phenomenal. Only thing that needs immediate attention is that STUPID out-of-phase deal happening with the middle position. Fixing that post haste!

I kept looking for my "perfect" telecaster and it didn't exist so I built one using Warmoth parts. It's a thinline with a strat pickup in the neck and a 59 PAF style humbucker in the bridge wired like a Les Paul... so not very tele like XD but honestly for me it fixed all the issues I personally had with a tele so now for me it's the best guitar I've ever had!

Stock guitars are boring. Every guitarist should experiment with gear. I don’t even know what my stock gibson pickups sounded like, i yanked em before plugging in. I can’t stand standard
@nedim_guitar3 жыл бұрын
@@Ottophil You say that if it was the objective truth. Many players really enjoy the stock guitars. Some do upgrades. Neither is more right nor more wrong. @Daniel Sheehan never found a Telecaster that was perfect for him, so naturally he built himself one, from his own preferences, and it's quite different from regular Telecasters and it's probably unique, but it suits him fine. Me? I've got a Squier Tele Deluxe 70's, and the only thing I might change is the nut. Or actually, the nut slots just need get filed a bit so my heavier guage strings move more smoothly. I like that guitar, I don't find it boring. It's fun to play. But I wouldn't tell anyone that wants to mod it that he/she is crazy, because if they've got an idea and a plan for modding, go for it! Just don't mod for modding's sake. I've done that because I didn't know better, and the only result was less money and a guitar that was in no way better. That was almost ten years ago. If it happened today, I would be able to feel and hear what the guitar needs. I actually messed around with my first ever electric guitar, which was a cheap and kinda shitty Strat copy. The pickups were horrible, so I changed them, changed the pots, the bridge... Maybe I will get a new nut and tuners. Not because that will make the guitar so much better, it's definitely not worth the money and effort. I did it to understand and to learn, so if there's another guitar I want to mod, I'll know what it needs and how to do it.

After listening to Dan & Red, Syd Barrett and his disco Esquire, and a few other heroes, I finally custom ordered one for myself. But as you say, I played it for about 5 minutes, which was 4:59 longer than i needed to realize it didn’t sound anything like i had hoped. So I tore its guts out, hacked apart an EMG DG20 set, resoldiered everything to fit, somehow shoehorned it all in there, and found…. I like it even less. I wish i could just stick a big fat humbucker in it to get some more meat on them bones, but the whole saddle plate obstructs thexlocation. :( Maybe I’ll just shape it on the grinder. Or, after all this time and $ customizing an already custom dream guitar, perhaps i need to admit the Tele and I are just not meant for each other and pass it on.

That country playing from Dan is absolutely incredible. I didn't realise how well teles took to distortion either can easily hold up with humbuckers (although the hum is pretty bad when not playing). This is making me lean more towards the squier paranormal offset tele than the super sonic. I just can't stand glossy fretboards and lots of teles I want that are otherwise good have them

I also hate them. I somehow ended up with several though. You can knock that shit off quick and easy with steel wool. I read about it everywhere and then just did it to my classic vibe neck this weekend as a practice run for a new 72 reissue I want to do next

Wow fascinating stuff gentlemen! I own two LP’s, a 335, a Brian May, and on the Fender front a Strat, a Jazz bass and a Tele. If I had to keep only one? That’s a no brainer. All day long that would be my 2012 standard Tele which introduced the Strat style rear bevel at the top of the body. No other guitar I’ve ever played comes close in feel and playability to this 2 tone sunburst gem of a Tele. The young salesman in the store confessed that he’d had his eye on this; I’ve since concluded that he probably set it up himself as I’ve never had any inclination to change anything. If it ain’t broke… Dan’s look of obvious joy with a Tele in hand, particularly Red, looks just like the way mine makes me feel.

Squiers are great, aren’t they? I have two classic vibes (one tele, one esquire) and they’re just spectacular. I did mod them a bit with some pickups, saddles and a different pick guard as I like doing that kind of thing but you certainly don’t *need* to do anything like that, they were fine guitars as is.

So many Strat players I know switched over to Tele’s eventually. However, I like a floating trem, the belly cut (more ergonomic), the input jack placement, and the headstock of a Strat, plus prefer the thin/ spanky sound, though it seems harder to find a great Strat than a great Tele.
