I got into sewing because I was fascinated with corsets, and it was the first thing I tried sewing.. it was tricky and took ages but I looove the magic of sewing corsets. and of course you need costumes to wear with corsets, thus my trip through costuming ensued.

Ah I almost decided to sew corsets first, but I thought, "Uhh, you know what? Let's just start with a skirt. Simpler." Well, currently halfway through the skirt, I'd say that a corset would've ended up in horror, in my case 😂

You know that is a beautiful way to think. I am going to try making some easy Regency stays and while watching some videos to do some research I was thinking "What made me think I could do this?!?!" but reading your comment gives me hope! @@lillianhansen5464 I'm still in the mock up stage! I'm very full in the bust and I'm having some issues with spillage lol. It's fun but when I get frustrated I stop and work on an easier project instead. I'm not in a rush or on a deadline. Thank you for your wonderful reply! I'm glad that something I wrote was inspirational to you. It's hard to remember sometimes that skills take time to build. No one was born knowing how to make a corset, or cook a gourmet meal, or rollerskate. And feeling discouraged doesn't have to make us stop trying to learn. Good luck on your regency stays!

Altering patterns was one of the first learned when I started sewing my own clothes in my teens. I had to, I was 180 cm (sorry, metric) tall when I was 14, nothing would fit me. Knowing how to draw and alter patterns is a great skill to have early in sewing life. =)

Wow! I can tell all the hard work you've put into all of these. I have a similar issue with corset patterns. I'm terribly short waisted with a significant hip spring. Altering corset patterns are a lot of fun while also can be the cause of a lot of headaches.

If sewing corsets was your beginning phase, I can only imagine today!! These were well beyond easy corsets, and amazing, little things, but certainlyt nothing major. I would give you a B+ to A for any of them. You have a very good eye for color, style and just a little more care to getting top section to match because we always look at the top of a garment first is why you sew that section first. Getting a pattern fitted is not something you think about as a beginner. The fact that they all FIT is amazing!!! I haven't sewn for about 20 years and want to do a corset, but will do a mock up first if I can be that patient.

I jumped in the deep end this year by making Scroop Patterns' Rilla Corset after I saw a youtuber say it was the easiest corset she ever made. It came out pretty good considering my massive lack of experience. It's a 1910 era, underbust style. Now I need to make everything else to go with it!

Have you ever made cups for your corsets/stays? I was watching another KZbinr several weeks ago draft a corset and she made and sewed in cups (it looked like a small crescent shaped pillow that supported the breast) and she stated she'd never make another corset or stays without them, they upped the comfort factor of wearing the stays (18th century style, but I think she installed a zipper front. The youtuber Mariah Pattie, and its one of her more recent videos.). I thought that was interesting. I love your collection - that embroidered corset is gorgeous. As another short-waited person I appreciate that KNOWING you have to adjust a pattern and actually DOING so are two different things! I also have the Redthreaded short stays patten and I hope to make it soon!

There is no way I can afford historically "accurate" fabrics right now and find myself feeling bad for using what I have on hand or buying budget options, especially when watching videos or reading blogs made by people who can afford yards and yards of silks and linens and wools for their projects.

Not only is it super helpful to see all of them in a chronological time, it's also helpful to see your different levels of sewing as you've learned. It helps people who are also learning feel better about their mistakes. I find this video now, but still, finally after almost 2 years of sewing, still begginer, I decided, it is time to start trying to do my first corset. For now, I am attempting just to make "corset" top, so top with some boning inside. After that, I will pobably try some mock up of corset properly :) Looking forward to it :)

I really feel you and all the struggles with your previous made corsets. I recently decided sew some 1780’s stays (with absolutely no other experience in historical sewing other than watching costube videos) and it took me ages. Also there are so many things wrong with how it turned out (cable ties as boning, a very questionable zipper instead of lacing, armhole way too high, etc.) but I still love it. I cannot wait to try (and fail) more projects in order to gain experience and someday hopefully create something wearable that fits me well.

I would love to see videos of your process adapting patterns to fit your short waist. I'm also short waisted, and it can be so frustrating. It can be so affirming to see another person with this body shape normalize it, and talk about altering patterns, because our bodies aren't wrong, the patterns just aren't made with us in mind.

There's this little trick I picked up that you might find useful, I use my old Barbie doll to make miniature models to try and figure out how to refit my stays (among other things.) to fit me. I am eventually going to make a scaled-down stuffed fabric doll with my measurements for future miniature projects, this way it saves on time and fabric, and I can give my niece doll dresses when I'm done.

I think your 1840s corset is a real success. I've come to the conclusion that the illustration in C&C is a bit misleading for that pattern. The 1840s contains so much transition but the dominant ideal was a long waist and a relatively flat/squished, high bust, and that's what the pattern provides. Your corset gives you beautiful length in the waist, it's a slam dunk I say :)

Concerning plastic whalebone: I live in Germany and I still find it hard to get this stuff. You can only buy in bulk from Wissner and somehow there are barely any online shops that sell it. I also have trouble getting silk ribbon. I can buy ribbon-like pieces of silk from Etsy, but they don't have a selvedge left and right, they are just strips of silk taken from the whole fabric. It's ludicrous. And my local shops have even less than that. I cannot even buy linen thread there. Or at least there is only 1 type of linen thread and it's relatively thick and only comes in black, brown and white. So it doesn't work for everything.

Sartor.cz hat eine große Auswahl an Korsett Zutaten (und außerdem wunderschöne Stoffe), zu gefühlt ziemlich angemessenen/günstigen Preisen. Ich hab dort allerdings selbst noch nie bestellt, ich bin zu pleite für dieses Hobby 😅 außerdem gibt es noch nehelenia patterns (obwohl ich dort sowohl Artikel sowie Versandkosten als eher hochpreisig empfinde). Zum Thema Seiden Bänder kann ich auch nicht weiterhelfen, generell finde ich es schwierig schöne Bänder und Borten aufzutreiben bei uns. Selbiges gilt für Leinenstoffe, die für historische Chemisen und Hemden geeignet sind. Falls da jemand ne gute Adresse hat, bitte melden 😊

Habe noch nicht mit Nähen angefangen, aber so vom Gefühl her ist der sehr schön für MA-Unterwäsche. Ich habe auch von Morgan Donner mal eine Gewichtsangabe für einen Chemise-Stoff gehört und das umgerechnet - es bewegt sich in der gleichen Größenordnung. Zum Vergleich: Das Leinen von IKEA hat 240g/m². Der Shop ("Lavendels") hat auch noch anderes Leinen und hat auch das von mir verlinkte noch in wollweiß und hellgrau. Und ist in Deutschland, das heißt kurze Versandzeiten und geringe Versandkosten.

Preferably which showing which patterns are in which books. I bought both American Duchess Simplicity patterns and that Janet Arnold book five book .

Personally I wouldn't worry if the lacing gap isn't parallel and worry more that the bones of the lacing panels are straight even if it means that you have an "A" OR "V" shaped lacing gap.

It's so helpful to hear from another short waisted person! I am still a very new seamstress, and I have such a hard time figuring out alterations for patterns. It's good to know from the outset that I'll need to pay attention to the waist whenever I tackle stays/corsets. Do you think your regency short stays are so comfortable and well-fitting because they are shorter and thus easier to adapt to your waist "height"?

I think so! The pattern for the short stays is much simpler because it doesn't need to handle the waist, so there is a lot less possibility for fitting issues :)

I just invested in a corset. My natural waist is 26” but in the tightly laced corset its 27”! This in itself isn’t an issue but the busk sort of flares out over the lower abdomen giving me a pot belly! It’s a professionally made corset, steel boning etc and very pretty but I don’t like it. It’s late Victorian inspired and I really got it as an experiment before going to all the effort of making one I wouldn’t wear. Do you think I’m putting it on wrong or have you ever noticed this pot bellied effect?

I think all of my stays have fundamental issues with the waist placement, which is really hard to alter in the made up section so I think they'd have to be completely re-made - and I do have a new pair of stays in the books, hopefully soon :)

Not too much I don't think! Corsets are meant to lace with at least a couple of inches of open space at the back, so there is some leeway :)

Watching this makes me think of a question I've never thought of before! ...I have some bras that are too low in the front so that when I bend over I "fall out" of the cups. I understand that corsets and stays are not bras...but do you have that problem when fully dressed in historical clothing? Do you either "fall out" or feel like you are about to? ...if any of that even makes sense. I'm a newbie only about to start my first sewing project and I've never worn any historical clothing.

I have a very small bust so I've never had that problem - however there are some corsets that are full bust rather than mine which are all mid-bust, and those I've heard are very good to keep everything in place :)

@@CatsCostumery Thank ye for that reply. I'm not huge in the bust area: 36C. However, I've been playing with the idea of suggesting a corset to one of my Sisters-In-Law who is very large busted. She complains of back issues and the straps digging into her shoulders. I thought it might be interesting to see if returning to previous forms of undergarments might actually be a positive for her.

When baking a corset do you make the panels a bit smaller so it can pall you in I don’t think this is right but as you don’t need the corset to close how do you do this
