I’m a teacher. I don’t like the idea of the hero saving the day. I don’t want drama. I get enough excitement from teaching music to several hundred K-5th graders. My classroom faces the front of the building, is on the first floor and has a wall of windows. The front entrance and cafeteria are on either side of me, both with a wall of windows. How insane is it that I know if someone tries to come in through my windows, that my best bet, if I’m not incapacitated or killed, is to attack when their trying to climb in through the window because they’ll have to put the gun down. I think about that at least once a week, because I’m not fight or flight. I’m freeze. So I figure I need that right in the forefront of my mind pretty much always. I need to imagine it because it’s the closest thing to practice and myelination I’m going to get.

I'm a night custodian at a local school, last year we had a school shooter scare with a hard lock down. Pretty much all of my teachers were shaken, one had readied a small fire extinguisher in an attempt to have something to protect her kids with. Another teacher had armed himself with a pair of scissors and spray bottle and had nearly blinded and stabbed the SRO. I never want my teachers to have to go through that again and I dread getting a call telling me to not go in due to it being a crime scene.

@@katpiercemusic Its good to know at least they already taught you to even do that. I've heard some schools aren't even teaching even that. Columbine is so much so used as a training tool. Those kids in the library could have walked out the exit door to the outside of the school and survived that was only 100 feet away, but they were trained to just duck and hide. If they would have been told they could have left out that door, everyone of those kids would have been alive. I used to work in the school district in the town I live in and had to go through those drills myself. I say used to because they merged my job together with another and they didn't want to pay 2 people to do the same job and since I had lesser years if service I was the odd man out. My job would made me one of the first people to be targeted or spotted a shooter before it happened since I would always be in the hallways through out the building. I also had the master key to unlock any door in the school. So I was a high profile target for a shooter (If they wanted the key and knew I had it). I know it isn't fun to have to think about the idea that any given day you my be forced to put any of active school shooting drills into action. Stay safe.

"There's only one acceptable tactic." What I said to myself was "Fire and Motion" when Beau said, "you press." Words from different teachers? "They were all scared." Not being scared isn't courage, it's lack of situational awareness. Being scared to death and doing the right thing anyway - that's courage.
@rileyfaelan
@rileyfaelan Жыл бұрын
'Press' can, in law enforcement context, cover convincing the murderer to surrender himself to an arrest. Which would generally be preferable, but may not always be feasible. 'Fire and motion' appears to be the military concept, in which case arresting the opponent for trial is not an option, and either party surrendering to the other is not particularly common, either.

Over the last 45 years I have worked with College age students at a major University who have suffered or acquired some sort of physical disability. The most troubling for me has been those who are in a wheelchair because of a gun shot wound. I wish more people would spend some time with young adults like this who acquired their gun shot disability either in war, gang violence or domestic accidents(most common.) It rocks me to the core seeing the carnage a big bore or high velocity round can do to the human body. I suffered my disability as a result of an off road motorcycle accident which left me paralyzed from the hips down. I have endured my own scars but my post-op wounds are nothing compared to what I have seen with those who were shot. I wish Representative Ogles and Boebert could spend some time with these kids before they glorify their semi-automatic weapon collection as part of their family Christmas cards. Maybe the only way we could reach someone this detached from reality is to have their kids meet some of these college students who are in a wheelchair because of gun violence. When are we going to get beyond the only solace of thoughts and prayers? Trust me, nobody should have to see what a gun can do to a teenager or someone younger. Thanks for what you do Beau.

To put it concisely for the aphorism trifecta: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

Honestly, and since I'm not from the US I basically just know this from the reddit front page, I'm more surprised about the age than the other anomaly. If they had attacked a university or high school, that's one thing they would be closer in time to them, but IIRC they are close to 20 years removed from that school. But really, I haven't looked into the age to target statistics, just got a general feeling, that most attackers aren't far removed from their target, e.g. current students or recently left. Then again, you never know where the real trauma sits in people's head. No real point for laypeople to try and get into their heads.

Thank you for getting me to look at this situation with a different POV. I was focusing more on the reason why assault weapons need to be abolished which is never the argument that will change Republicans' minds. The argument instead should be that regardless of how effective the police response was, it was still not enough to change the outcome. If we argue this point more, maybe it will make a diference.

You know what? I want to talk about the angle that you didn't address. But if they were part of that group it does not mean that the group is bad. I am a white male who listens to heavy metal. I play first person shooters. I am in the demographic that is normally connected to these kinds of events. I had people who tried to bully me in junior high and high school. Usually that didn't end well for them though so I actually felt fairly secure. I was not marginalized. I never felt desperate. MAGA types are pointing to the shooter being trans and they are acting like that justifies the way they have been treating transgender people this whole time. I would argue that they might be to blame. Look you abuse a population of people for long enough and they're going to snap. The way transgender people have been treated in this country for years by a particular segment of the country can only be categorized as abuse. This was going to happen eventually. Marjorie Greene saying that the hormones or whatever were to blame is part of it. Marjorie Greene should look in the mirror to see the real problem. Demonizing the transgender community because of this is putting the attention on the wrong people. If you want to know who is to blame and are about to say something mean about transgender people, stop typing and look in the mirror to see who is to blame because it's you. Beau sorry I know you are not confrontational but I had to say it. This is a tragedy that these MAGA people are trying to score points on and ultimately it's their fault. You might not say it but I will. I know you Democrats are all Kumbaya and stuff but I am not. These people are to blame and somebody needs to say it.

The Millennium Dome diamond heist (2000) had an interesting element regarding security. The diamond was in a 3” thick bomb proof glass cabinet. The robbers broke through it in 3 minutes with a sledgehammer and a nail gun. At that point the police busted them. My point is, even if they fitted blast proof glass to every school window, it can still be broken quite easy.

The Congressman from this area was chillingly dismissive. He said that there's nothing that can be done to stop it. When asked about his own daughter's safety he said "Oh, we home school her." From here in Wales I don't understand how this happens AT ALL, never mind regularly. The thought of my 6 yr old grandson taking part in an "active shooter drill" just does not compute. The fetishism of guns in America baffles me. In 1996, there was a school shooting in Dunblane, Scotland. Some laws were changed, others enacted. Number of school shootings since then? 0

Americans are just convinced that the one thing that works literally everywhere else will not work here. I don't understand the reasoning, but that is legitimately the belief from so many people here. There are many here who feel the same. Our problem is the NRA "donates" tons of money to the Republicans. Those Republicans then vote against any change in gun laws unless it's to relax them. It's proven by statistics that states run by Republicans have more mass shootings and murders than those run by Democrats. Every other country in the world, except places like Yeman, Afghanistan, etc..., have strict gun laws and there are very few mass shootings. But it doesn't matter what proof we have if the NRA can buy their loyalty. Money is more important than children's lives to those people. We, those not paid off by the NRA, will continue to try and pass laws restricting military type weapons and such to protect our children. Of course, we've been trying for years....

This happened literally right up the street from where I live. My daughter had texted me that her school was in lockdown because “something bad happened in Green Hills” and she wanted me to make sure our dogs weren’t outside. Before I even finished reading her text there were non stop sirens and helicopters. Our police did a great job. It’s solely because of their quick response that things didn’t get a whole lot worse. When our local government here in Nashville cares more about our kids than they do about their NRA contribution, things will change.
