*Fun Fact:* This film exists because Barry Levinson was asked to direct an _actual_ documentary about the Chesapeake Bay and its pollution problem, but he turned it down because it wasn't his style. So instead he chose to take a good chunk of the info from the planned documentary and horror-ified it in order to have room for creativity, and to appeal to people who otherwise wouldn't have paid much attention to the actual documentary. It's so clear Levinson knows what he's doing with found footage. He gives various common recording equipment to the extras, never goes beyond what each individual tool is actually capable of (see: the fixed cameras throughout the movie - the police car's dashcam, for example, which can only show straight into or out of the car, never side-to-side). The cops don't have bodycams because they probably wouldn't in a small town like the one featured, so sometimes the film relies solely on still shots and audio recordings. The music and editing also lend themselves to the tension and sensory overload that living in an epidemic would create, without going too over-the-top. The people feel like real people and only the truly guilty are framed as "villains", so to speak. The rest are just normal-ass people who were unfortunate enough to live/be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I know I'm a little biased due to my parasite phobia, but nevertheless, this movie has made me genuinely unnerved multiple times, even after repeated viewings. *It just works.*
@JenFoxworth2 жыл бұрын
Living practically on top of the bay, just several miles down the road, and knowing all the stuff about the history of the pollution and what not, when I found this movie when younger, I nearly shat myself. It's still a struggle to get proper clean up of the bay, but it definitely is better then it used to be. I'm not in Maryland, I'm on the other side, in VA, and on the mainland, but even so, it was still scary as hell.

The Bay is such an underrated found footage style horror film. Barry Levinson directed it! Normally you wouldn’t expect a top tier film director make a found footage film. But he pulled it off effectively!
@Kiss_My_Aspergers4 жыл бұрын
Amazing what a difference it makes when the director knows what he's doing. If you compare this to a movie like The Visit, which really wasn't a found footage film at all (and I'm not talking about the literal definition of "found footage" here, either), the contrast is mind-boggling. Levinson himself states it plainly in the commentary track: hand out phones, cameras, video cameras, whatever to the extras and have them film as they normally would. Remember the limits of fixed-position cameras like dashcams and security cameras. Don't worry about every single frame being perfectly crystal-clear, because except for those cases where a person would have a _professional_ camera, like the news crew, most people can't afford to spend thousands on high-end equipment. They seem like such obvious concepts, and yet so many films (ESPECIALLY the aforementioned Shyamalan film) go against these fundamental "rules" of effective found footage/horror mockumentary movies, out of either lack of common sense, laziness, or the meddling of businessmen who care more about revenue than quality and realism, and who don't know or understand the first thing about filmmaking. It's a damn shame the truly well-made FF films like _The Bay_ often fly under the radars of people who would otherwise support the hell out of it, all because some people don't know how to market them effectively, and instead produce and promote material based on how well they think they can appeal to a wide audience with it.

@virtualboygodot82514 жыл бұрын
In case you feel scared about this happening in real life, here have these logical reasons to help you get over the paranoia: Think about this, those isopods don't really kill the host, they just replace their tongue and leech off the stuff that they eat. The fact that they move incredibly slow both inside a body of water and outside. The fact that their bite is incredibly weak (relatively speaking. There's a reason why it has to nip blood vessels of the tongue instead of straight up chewing through) and the fact that they most likely wouldn't even survive inside a human for long because of the difference in body temperature, pH and the general structure of a human (you don't need me to tell you that the inside of a fishes gills and mouth is way different than the insides of a human). I get that they mutated into their Resident Evil forms, but that is some serious Nemesis-tier mutations that they have to get through in order to pull off what they become in this movie. If that ever happens in real life, I'll eat my favorite pair of Darth Vader socks. (edit: they also aren't immune to the all mighty gun. They probably already invested all of their level up points into attack and potential, so it really should be no issue. Also if you don't consent to them attacking you, they legally cannot enter your body.)

What do you mean by unsung allegory? From my interpretation, I don't think it's allegorical in the sense that it doesn't relate one particular event (EDIT or zeitgeist etc.). But I agree with @urahara64360 in that it's closer to a warning, and would go further in saying it's a warning about thinking you're safe because you're in a small community, or perhaps from the perspective of the mayor, a warning about your own pride/desires vs. the needs the situation demands. And also maybe, just seeing how far somebody will go before admitting they made a mistake.

I've never heard of the Bay but I feel like this is going to be about some kind of water borne illness or something because I feel like that's the most horrifying things right now.

@Molly Pop It was creepy as hell. The distorted black and white still images in the movie were spine chilling.

Man. The actors for the 911 phone calls were ridiculously good. I actually felt that on edge feeling when listening to real life 911 calls. They nailed it.

I can't really think of any other way to put it than saying that the scenes you showed here by themselves gave me some some serious vietnam flashbacks to reading some of Junji Ito's work. Jesus christ, how horrifying...

Great overview! This is definitely one of the scariest found footage movies I’ve ever seen, because it combines three of my major fears: government malfeasance, the open ocean, and inexplicable/incurable medical catastrophe
