Both games have around the same amount of levels. Someone else mentioned in another comment that Mario 3's stages have a larger focus on the platforming and Mario World's has more variety with the puzzles and searching (as well as platforming). So it makes sense 3's stages are shorter since they're more focused

Some reasons why I think 3 is better than World: 1. Mario is faster and heavier compared to him being slower and floatier in the sequel, and combined with the more challenging levels, it's more fast-paced, engaging gameplay that feels better to skillfully speedrun. 2. Mario's speed in the water is way too fucking slow. I don't know why they did this when he swims way faster in the previous games. It's like he's moving through molasses, and I hate it. The water levels are not fun and are easily the worst part of the game by far. 3. Mario's speed in the map is way slower. 'Cause they want to physically show Mario walking everywhere, and that's cool the 1st time you're beating the game, but eventually, all you want to do is just play levels, and you don't care about the map. In SMB3, you just instantly snap to the next location and can traverse an entire map in seconds. It feels like they implemented the Star Road to mitigate this, but even then, it still takes so much longer to get to anywhere far away. 4. The cape is inconvenient compared to the raccoon leaf. In SMB3, you control when you fly, so you can speedRUN entire levels, but with the cape in WORLD, every time you jump, you take off into the sky, and I don't usually wanna do that because I don't wanna skip over large portions of the level; I want to actually play it, so I have to either slow down before every jump, immediately crash into the ground right after takeoff, or twist my hand into a deformed claw to awkwardly push the spin jump button so I can jump without flying. I wish they put in a way to do that with normal jumps. 5. I don't think the soundtrack's quite as good because SMW keeps remixing the same theme, even if it is good, VS SMB3 having every song be unique and good. Although, I will say that 1 of the few problems I have with 3 is the lack of a phenomenal, truly memorable, timeless overworld theme. Like, compare the 2 main level themes to the ones from 1, 2, World, and 64. It's easily the weakest and doesn't reach that level, and I wish it did; it would've made it feel like the complete package instead of being 99% there, but the rest of the game is better than the rest of all the other games, but it's still done great in those games, plus they have main themes everyone still comes back to to this day. Some other nitpicks: 1. I wish after beating the 6th castle, there was a bridge connecting the left side of Chocolate Island to Yoshi's Island so you could get back to it from later levels a lot more conveniently instead of having to go all the way back around or through the Star Road. 2. I wish after defeating every level in the Special Zone, that the ones in the top row would connect to the bottom so I could quickly get from 1st to last instead of having to slowly traverse all the way around; even though that last level is right there, I can't just go right there in 1 second; I have to go all the way away and then all the way back. 3. After taking the final warp, the maps have an altered palette, and some of the enemies look different, and I dislike that this is permanent. I wish you could go through the warp again to change it back instead of that being gone forever. 4. I dislike that there are some points in levels where you can't take Yoshi. It feels bad to have to dismount him because the level design won't let him proceed any further. He also should be able to go into the castles and ghost houses. He's on the box; he's the theme of the game; you should be able to have him at all times; there shouldn't be anywhere where you can't take him. 5. On that note, it also makes the story not make sense because he states that he's coming with you to save his friends and yet does not go into the castles where his friends are, plays no role in the actual rescue of his friends despite that being the character's motivation. Yeah, putting him in _now,_ he wouldn't be able to traverse those levels, but they could've decided to let there from the get-go and designed levels with him in mind and/or put in a climbing mechanic. Despite all these issues, I do still think it's a very fun game and 1 of the greatest ever made that I still love; I just think it's held back some.

Some good points here! I'm gonna try and circle back to it later when I'm at my desk because typing on the app stinks lol. But I will say I love SMB3 almost as much as I love SMW and I can respect there are aspects there that 3 does better. In the video I was being a bit cheeky when I said "SMW is better in every way, shape, and form" lol. That was the nostalgia/subjectivity leaking out

@NintenDeen Yes, that the question people are asking for almost 30 years now; is it a Mario game or not. I don't mind either option because it doesn't change it's one of the best 2D platformers in gaming history. I really wished Nintendo would ever make another Yoshi game like that.

While I agree with you about World's art style over SMB 3, you are absolutely wrong about the soundtrack. SMB 3's soundtrack is more plenty and memorable. The soundtrack in World is repetitive and gets old quick. And while the art style may be better, it's also repetitive. The entire map on the over world is all green, blue, yellow, and brown. The same applies to most of the levels themselves. An overuse of 4 or 5 colors brings the art style down for me.
@NintenDeen6 сағат бұрын
In fairness, that was the most subjective and biased portion of the video lol. And again, this could be entirely arbitrary, but my get tells me it's easier for a casual gamer to recognize the tunes from SMW are from that game specifically than it is for someone to pinpoint SMB3 tune is from that game as opposed to a different Mario game. Which is part of the reason I think World is more iconic.. but this is all an assumption on my end. I'm comparing the 2 goats anyway so it's probably pretty even

I never played the Super Mario games on the NES. When I was born (1993) my family already had a SNES. I was playing Super Mario All-Stars and World by the time I was three. SMB3 and SMW are still two of the best games ever, and will always be up there in my list of all time favourite games. I never had a GBA because I was so happy with my SNES, GameBoy Colour, and N64 that I didn't need another console until the Wii came out 😂 Edit: I also had a Sega Megadrive, PS1, and PS2, so I was more than entertained for those years.

I agree about Mario RPG. Mario RPG sort of got us warmed up for Mario 64. Even a lot of the levels are similar like Jolly Rogers Bay reminds me of the ghost ship in Mario RPG, Rainbow Ride is like Mellow's home, etc One thing I'll disagree on is Mario 3 levels being too short. If anything I'll go the other way and say Mario World's levels dragged on a bit and also there are less levels and worlds. For example I'd compare Cheese Bridge to the Cloud land. Cheese Bridge only has two levels the normal route. While Cloud land still had a lot of levels even being a two part land.
@NintenDeen18 сағат бұрын
Funnily enough I've heard that argument before. About the Mario World stages being too long lol. I've always disagreed with the sentiment as I've felt they were the perfect length since it allows you to take in the stage more, but I can understand why someone that would prefer the quicker NES style stages would view them as dragging on top long
@zeaferjones140416 сағат бұрын
@NintenDeen To me the games are pretty even. I do think Mario World had a certain coolness factor like the music of the Vanilla Dome. I just slightly prefer Mario 3 because I feel that it is more focused on skillful platforming while Mario World at times is very puzzle based for example finding the green switch is a pain, in fact that level in general is a pain because you have to memorize that pipe.

It's funny how much a person's age can color their perceptions of these games. As a guy who was born in the early 80s, my first taste for each early Mario was on their original systems (SMBs 1-3 on NES, SMW on SNES). For me, personally, I think SMB1-3 looks and sounds best on the humble NES (although I freely admit that potent nostalgia for each of those versions is probably a part of my reasoning in that!) To be clear, I've also played every other versions of each of SMB1-3, however, I've yet to play one that I liked more than the originals. Heck, I was the biggest SNES fan boy as a kid as you would find in the early 90s, but I was still disappointed with Super Mario All Stars after I got it, which I wasn't expecting. The SNES/Advance remakes have upgraded graphics, to be sure, but is upgraded always better? To me, the background tiles in the All Star games, in particular, come across as somehow, overly busy, and yet at the same time, strangely disconnected and generic - like Nintendo wasn't sure what it wanted to do with background themes and they just pulled ideas out of a hat at random. I also ended up greatly preferring the bright, clear, punchy sounds of the NES originals over the muffled, muddy and mushy samples that were used on the SNES/Advance versions - which is odd, considering that, for the most part, I think the SNES tended to sound much better than NES, overall, but not so much in this case, imo. It also just felt like Nintendo was taking the original, and even then iconic, originals and trying to force them into being SMW clones or something. I mean, I love SMW, so I understand the appeal, but to me, SMB1-3 and SMB 1-3 on All Stars or Advance just feel like entirely different games, in which the latter have sacrificed the boldly simple charm of the originals in service of "better" graphics and sound, but, imo, with only very mixed results in the end, at best. And that's not even getting into the control changes. In particular, SMB1 on All Stars feels almost unplayable to me due to its glitched hit mechanics on blocks and the augmented gravity on Mario's jumps vs what I was very used to on the original. In any case, as a kid who was underwhelmed by All Stars (amd their subsequent Advance remixes), it's always interesting to see how much more positively those versions tend to be viewed as by people whose first major experiences with the first 3 Mario games comes from those versions instead of the originals. For me, personally, the NES originals will always be the greatest - they were what I played first, and they were better than almost any other game out at the time. However, I'm glad that we can at least agree that SMB Lost Levels is badically trash, regardless of version 😂 Thanks for the video. Cheers!
@NintenDeen21 минут бұрын
I enjoyed reading this lol. What's funny is I didn't realize people liked the NES visuals on any game at all until I did the MegaMan series and people started commenting on it. Primarily in the Wily Wars video. I always figured everyone just accepted that 16-bit looks better 😅. I think some of the later NES games looked great but a lot of the library looks flat. That being said, I also think low-poly 64-bit games could be argued to look better than many GameCube games and I wonder if my justifications for that are similar to arguments people make in favor of some NES titles over 16-bit ones lol. I feel like I want to revisit my "Let's Talk About Nostalgia" video and make it less Mario 64 focused lol

Yeah I wanted to mention in the video, but the only one of the 4 games that I genuinely think the GBA port should be the only version anyone is playing is Mario 2 (primarily because of the red coins). I like your videos, but what about Super Mario Bros 5, ie, Yoshi's Island? I think later on they made it a spin off series but at the time, it was the next Mario game. That was the gap between SMW and SM64. I am guessing you didn't play it back then? I am older (1982 kid), I had won all the 8 bit Mario games on the NES before I got my SNES in 1994.
