As a 3D character artist.. the humans look weird to me. Their overall body proportions are strange. and I find their shoulders to be too droopy.. and strange.. your rib cage shouldn't be wider than your actual shoulders.... 😩

I have a question for you, if you wouldn't mind: would there be any reason for a gaming studio to release the LBY humans looking like this? I'm sure there are many reasons but I'm curious if prioritizing other gaming mechanics getting polished is a _legitimate_ reason to release something so publicly in the early stages of development? I'm definitely making another video on the art direction and that's one question that I plan on speculating on. I'm just waiting for the Art team Dev stream to go live before I make a video focused on the graphics 😊.

I think graphics is usually finished very late in the dev cycle, and polish nowadays usually after the release, it's nothing special I believe. Paralives is just the extreme exception and imo it'll take years longer than necessary since they focus on presentability first.

@@Sovereign-Gaming hmm.. I'm not entirely sure if the design of the LBY humans Are supposed to be this way. From my understanding Good character designs need a good Base foundation to build upon.. if these are the base proportions they are going with I can't imagine the final results being any good.. they have done their faces well though.. just not the body. Overall everything about life by you doesn't appear to have any Core design.. style and Quality is inconsistent which could just be because it's in the early stages, or they don't have a main Art Director on the team to ensure the games style is consistent. It's reminding me of indie game developers who asset bash a bunch a stuff from the unreal/unity Marketplace instead of making their own stuff. Overall i am hoping things just look this way because it's in early stages.

@@Sovereign-Gaming yeeh that's cool if you want to refrence stuff I've said. I've just finished watching their dev Stream which gives Alot of details about character customization. I now understand why proportions of some characters look so strange. It's because there's A LOT of customisation options.. sooo like I mentioned before about the narrow slopped shoulder proportions, there are sliders to further customise them.. As for the artstyle choice, like I'd mentioned there is no clear style. And in the dev Stream they mebtiined they chose to go for no set style, because they want it to be customisable for modders. So basically there just throwing out the base foundation of the game features.. and giving a basic style that allows content creators/modders to customize it to their own specific styles. I still don't know how I feel about the game but the Dev Stream has clarified Alot of concerns I had.

I understand people’s concern with the graphics but as someone who’s been playing video games since childhood, it’s important you all understand how game development works. They made very clear from its announcement that the game is still in development and that graphics will improve. Polishing a game is almost always the final step before releasing a game for public consumption and its true for many games of all genres, not just life sims. Take a look at the GTA 6 leak for example. Not the best visuals either but fans of the franchise know that all that will improve because it’s a pattern we’ve seen before!

Yeah. As the previous commenter pointed out, graphics are usually one of the last things that gets polished. And it makes sense, because first you need to make sure that your game actually WORKS. It doesn't make sense to make those textures crisp as shit and the faces snatched if you do all that and find out that your IG baddie explodes into a million mesh triangles every time she touches a guy's mouth during the kiss animation or anything like that.

As someone who has played video games from childhood you should know how worthless and disappointing the phrase "still in development" is. The graphics of the characters are just bad, plain and simple. I think at most what they could do is improve the lighting and colour of the game. Pay attention to how the characters stand and move, the skeletons are rigged very weirdly, and at this stage they are already animated. These are not things that you can 'polish', these are things that are done maybe in mid-development. Look at GTA, look at Sims 5. Those were pre-alpha footage and you could still see an element of good rigging and animation to them. I'll probably still enjoy this game for the sandbox gameplay and mods but the graphics WILL be bad.

@@coroner2141 Wrong. I don't have to look into the history of gaming to know that some games do polish their animations dead last. Three years ago, Baldur's Gate 3 went into Early Access. I played it for many hours. The animations were unpolished, buggy, and odd, with the models themselves being hastily thrown together many a time. The full release happened about a week ago and guess what? The animations in the full game are much better and the models look fantastic too. So things like animation or even the models themselves can still be improved down the line. I'm not standing in this game's corner I'm just correcting you because what you are saying is not fully true.

Yeah, I think that we are just getting the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what the game will look like - especially when it comes to how the characters look. Thank you for this video, was waiting for when you would touch the subject of graphics. I have posted previously on LBY channel about the humans appearance. It seems like there going for a realistic art style if so, then the humans appearance should be closer to realism as possible. I know that the game is still a working process and at the moment they might be working towards gameplay and such but, it's not wrong to let them know how we feel about the humans appearance. I would like for LBY to improve the appearance of the humans, facial expressions and the way they walk, right now is somewhat robotic. Apart from the humans appearance I'm okay with how the rest of the game looks. I do think they should polish the humans appearance at least before releasing the game, it will attract more people toward buying it for example, I have seen the graphics of cities skylines 2 and the game looks gorgeous. I have no doubt that I will be getting the game upon release.💜

LBY have announced a live stream for Friday with the art team so I anticipate that they'll show us what they have planned for the graphics as I think this is the main sticking point for people. It's funny you mention Cities Skylines 2 as the new trailer has made me more certain that I want to support LBY. If they follow the same strategy as City Skylines has. CS2 looks to be including a lot of content in the base game that was in dlc for City Skylines 1 as well as fan made mods. That is a big deal. They have the monopoly on city builders now and they could have so easily gone the same route as EA have with Sims 4 and basically released all the same DLC again.

Thank you again for watching, I truly appreciate it 😊. I think that the saving grace for Paradox is that they have been very clear about telling us that everything for the Early Access right now is a WIP. I am hopeful that the graphics will evolve from now until Early Access, and even from Early Access to base game. But I also have to wonder if that would change the PC requirements to run the game - meaning, that the current computer requirements was only benchmarking the graphic card demands for the humans as they look now 🤔? I definitely feel like I'm over-analyzing that but I feel that it would be a fair question to ask 🤷‍♂. Yeah, I am totally okay with how the rest of the game looks. It's just the humans that look.. odd. It's so funny because it seems like initial releases on life simulation games all get a lukewarm reception on how Sims/humans look in the first release (other than TS2)😅.

However, there hasn't been a great deal about gameplay itself yet. Though yesterdays previews of needs was a bit more revealing. Great video Sovereign! I am in the same boat when it comes to the TS4 art style in that it never really appealed to me. It definitely has it's moments of beauty (mostly when it comes to the lighting) but for me, the muddy, low resolution textures and clayish people really get in the way of me truly appreciating what it can look like and I still honestly believe that TS2 is the best looking Sims game in terms of consistency and pushing the limits of what was visually possible at the time of release. I think when comparing these games to LBY, or more specifically Paralives to LBY, it's really important to note the development approach that each game is taking. Paralives is a crowd funded indie game where impressions to it's backers are extremely important and are necessary in order to build trust with them and be able to continue funding development of the game. One way to do this is to ensure that the constant stream of development updates shows that the game always looks beautiful. In the world of crowdfunding, a more beautiful looking pre-alpha game is hands down going to attract more customers than an ugly pre-alpha game of the same genre, so visuals and art style are prioritized. With LBY though, it has the benefit of already being pre-funded by a large publisher and just like with other higher profile games, this means graphical polish can be left till much later in the development process. With this development approach (and especially when it's also going to be in early access), working on gameplay features and systems takes priority because unlike Paralives, there are going to be deadlines involved on when this stuff needs to be complete and in most cases the most efficient way of building almost anything (not just games) is by getting the foundations up before attempting to beautify them and make them look good. That being said, in my personal opinion I think LBY is already a good looking game, but yes, as of right now the humans themselves are the weakest aspect and are easily the thing that needs improvement the most. I think most of the other complaints about visuals come down to a combination of the video resolution, the video compression and the weird mishmash of filters and bloom that they always seem to have enabled when uploading them. Based on the actual asset quality for environments, objects and furniture (which are all surprisingly very high in poly count, easily the most detailed objects of the 3 games), I can almost guarantee that simply turning off these filters and running the game in a higher resolution would result in far better overall visual presentation but I think the reason why they are even using so many visual filters right now is to simply try and hide the amount of graphical artifacting that occurs from a game being at this point in development, but that's just my personal theory.

There is a lot to your theory and I am totally taking that into account when I make a video about the Art Dev stream on Friday. Who knows, I just may quote you again in an upcoming video 😉. I just don't get why a company would adjust their graphics (whether done through filters or otherwise) to intentionally present something less polished to the public 🤷‍♂? I would assume that the leadership in charge of the project would want the game looking as good as it possibly can. But I guess we will find out more this Friday 🙏. Personally, I think it would be super cool for them to address the elephant in the room head-on; something that EA never really did IMO 😅.

The first images of characters from paralives look very weird too. The proportions was off, the outline shader look flat. They look a lot better now. I think my my issue with LBY graphic is the shadows are too dark, they are probably using it to cover the textures. The humans models were made to look realistic and maybe thats the problem. Sims 4 look cartoony but even if you try to create ugly sims they still look some how cute because the shapes and textures are pleasing. LBY dont have good shaders and you need a lot of details to pull off the realistic graphic without looking uncanny.

as someone who absolutely does Not like life by you's graphics as they currently are, as long as they improve (especially the humans, god they're so ugly) as development progresses, i'll be fine. i personally see no problem with graphics developing over an early access period. one of my favorite survival games, 7 days to die, was one of the ugliest games i've ever played back in its earliest days, and while it's not exactly beautiful now, it definitely looks much better. another example is project zomboid, which used to be very rudimentary and crude looking, but now has come into its own. graphics developing over the course of development and early access is something i'm totally fine with.

I want to start by saying I don’t like graphics. The exterior world looks more developed in terms of textures. The interior world and buildings look less developed. The lighting across the board is way too harsh and cold. The humans look like plastic toys. Specifically Barbie dolls. But also their arms are too short, just a bit. I do agree they are reminiscent of Sims 3 Sims, but their facial structure is better. I’m not a fan of alpha a lot of the time because I think it’s a very difficult style to make look good, especially hair. It’s hard to make all those strands of hair look like hair instead of wild wire, or candy floss. The funny thing is, the alpha graphics I’m comparing LBY to isn’t a life sim, but Diablo 4. For a game where 90% of the time you’re floating 20 feet over your character’s head, their character customization and art style is amazing. So, next I want to say that you seem to be someone who plays games but also understands some about programming. This early access is coming out in alpha, and I’m even going to say a pretty early alpha build. They have not used those words, but when you consider that half the character models aren’t even going to be playable and may not be done before the end of early access, that in itself is proof enough to me. I do think the graphics are going to be worked on a lot over time. And a lot can be done in a short time. I’ve been in alpha tests before where the game was playable but there were no textures, only framework. Then in 4 months were completely finished and polished. I don’t think we will get that speed for LBY but I do think it will get better. But I don’t think they will change the art direction. Since they are creating character models still, I think the textures and overall graphics will improve but otherwise this Sims 3 mid 2000s-2010s look is what they are going for. As for Sims 4, I like your commentary on it because one of the major things I wish more people realize is that each Sims game and people’s opinions on them are often based on their preferences rather than a failing. I loved that Sims 4 was more similar to Sims 2 in art style than Sims 3. I prefer the play style of Sims 4 to Sims 3, too. (I actually was not a fan of Sims 3 at all.) I’m also excited for Paralives. It is the prettiest but I’ve also seen many people say they hate the art style and think it’s ugly. I’m also playing TinyLife which is very basic pixel graphics. Anyway, at the end of the day if the game is good the graphics are less important. At least to me.

I definitely agree with you on viewing the Early Access as more of an Alpha version of the game. I think that I may have only implied it in previous videos, but I honestly believe that Paradox decided to release an Early Access version of Life by You as an aggressive marketing tactic to secure the majority of life simulation players before other studios had a chance to release their life simulation games. Between Paralives, The Sims 5, and Life by You - Paradox is the only studio making promises to have _something_ playable in 2023. The sub-text here is that I do think that they rushed certain things to make this happen, and the polish on the LBY human design would have been one of them. Lol yeah, it amazes me that there is a lack of a fundamental understanding that art is personal. I try _not_ to be too negative about the Sims 4 because there are some GREAT ideas in the franchise, and I also believe that there should be respect for people behind the pixels; anyways, I feel like TS4 was better in concept than execution. But that doesn't make the game any less great for players who love TS4. It just wasn't my cup of tea, but there were a lot of good ideas and work that did go into TS4 at the end of the day... and the evolution of the TS4 graphics is certainly something that EA can be proud of. I just think that there are a lot of lessons from The Sims that can/are applied in Life by You 😊.

As a sims player I focused mainly on mods and used very little CC because I was generally happy with how everything looked.

I'd rather Paradox is the one who is funding the Paralives. Because Paralives have more chance of beating Sims. But they can't because they are just small studios that rely on funding.

I agreed with basegame graphics, the texture is very very plastic look. Paralives clearly have more catchy looks than TS and LbY now. Idk they really wanted to rely on modders in graphics so they focused more on features, performance and gameplay. But yeah if the basegame look like this it can be backfired heavy lol. Even the latest character design creation well the only good thing is they have color picks and height slider but still similar to TS4 in character design. Nothing we can really change in face, skin, hair, textures, etc. But if they deliver the base gameplay good enough and mod integrations/making really good too it could be redeemable. But still those ground/grass/foliage texture really bad. But again this game is still in Early Access, so lets see maybe after a year it could be like TS4 that get better and better. Meanwhile the one Im worry is Paralives, since if they not releasing the game soon, The Sims 5 (project renee) and LbY probably will left Paralives ahead before they even started. Yes I know their teams/resources arent as big as EA & Paradox that also already have experiences in life simluations/buildings game. But really, if they cant keep up their hype and communities would be eaten up by these 2 by the time they release.

I’m not a fan of those graphics, either. It feels like someone’s sketchbook trying to be 3d.

@innocentnemesis3519 I think that's intentional to make it more graphic and illustrated like how the spiderverse movie tries to mimic the comic book style in 3D

I play city skylines so the graphics are similar to that game, but it is a city building game so they are OK for the game but I don't really like them. I don't like the way the people look or the game looks, I really want a life simulation game to play so I will try this, but I want them to be better.

Since they are still developing, I won't worry too much about them, but yes, the hair is giving off a TS3 vibe and I couldn't stand TS3 hair. I wanted a combo from TS2/TS3 for TS4, but they decided to over-exaggerate the TS2 style and call it new. TS5 (so far) looks more like an extension of TS4 rather than a new generation of gameplay. Again, time will tell. As for Paralives, I do love it the most because of the art style and (so far) the mechanic--even though it does remind me of paper dolls back in the day. It's another wait-and-see situation. In the end, they are all going to be their own thing. Comparing them prematurely might be done to the detriment of the gamer because all of them are still in development and there is no guarantee what any of them will be like on launch day.

I think that the sims 4 (considering that is from 2014) looks WAAAAY better than Life by you. And sincerely I don't get the "we are adults and sims 4 is too cartoonish". Btw I like my simulation games when they don't try to look like alpha cc in the sims 4 with orrible graphics.

I'm not a big fan, I keep seeing all these videos about the game but it just looks clunky, the UI reminds me of a cheap Roblox game and the characters are reminiscent of IMVU... It seems like the life sim community is desperate to cling onto the first "realistic" style game they are presented with, as we're tired of EA's greed but a lot of people also complain about the Paralives art style. Personally Paralives is a perfect combination of cutesy and comic-book for me, and with some time and polish I think it'll look amazing and compete with the Sims. But Life by You... the foundation just isn't there for me. Only time will tell, I guess.

I don't like the cartoonish style of Paralives. But even that game is more interesting for me than LBY. Because the characters in Life By You are terribly ugly. It is just an impossible nightmare. I can't. Why is this the second time this is the problem? And who made the characters in Sims Medieval? Because I like them better than anything I have seen so far. Even more than the sims in sims 4.

There's bad graphics, and then there's Life By You graphics, which are so horrible you just cannot look at them. I hope these graphics are not what the final product will be like, and in any case, I cannot believe they are seriously promoting a game that looks so bad, and are actually trying to get people excited. The game may be promising in terms of its features, but who cares if you just cannot spend a moment looking at the game without wanting to vomit. Graphics aren't everything, sure, but there is just so much that the human eye can take. One cannot play a game that looks like this. Sorry, but for now I am not at all excited about this game, and even The Sims 5 looks more promising.

The graphics is the main reason I'm not interested in Life by You. Paralives makes me a lot more excited for it's release and playthrough footage.
