One thing that concerns me about the movie is that it seems like Usnavi is telling the story from the future in what I'm assuming to be a beach in D.R. Mild Spoiler Warning One thing I loved is the scene of Usnavi talking to the little kids, telling them the story of Washington Heights, "so it doesn't disappear". It's a lovely touch that fits with the shows themes of remembering where you come from, the places that make you you, and keeping part of your past with you wherever you go. What I can't decide on though, is my feelings on the implication in this scene that he actually did leave Washington Heights, when his decision to stay and accept The Heights as his true home feels like such a key, complete moment at the end of the show
@r_ravenclaw3 жыл бұрын
What I think is that they are going to try to set it up so that the audience thinks he's leaving, but then at the end we find out it that scene was a dream/thought/another place/a short visit or something. Because I doubt Lin will let them change that ending.

Her friend who also really loved movies and musicals, passed away about a month ago. So it’s a bittersweet time, to say the least. So we’ll be watching it and thinking of her friend and pour one out for him as we celebrate. This musical is such a cornerstone of my journey towards loving musical theatre. Sorry tangent time I know this is already long but I just remember being in 11th grade and going to see it with my high school drama class in Seattle at the 5th ave theatre. And I STILL vividly remember when the lights went out right before Blackout. The way the whole theatre went quiet, like we were all holding our breath, confused, a little scared, excited. And just to hear their voices puncture out of the darkness like cries for help as they sang about being powerless..... like fucking damn. It doesn’t get much more powerful than that. Anyways thought I’d share. I miss theatre so much. And I miss my friends who love it too. The ppl I’m stuck inside with are indifferent at best so I’m glad to get this silly chance in a YT comment to gush a little. ❤️

YES! I'm so incredibly HYPED FOR THIS!! Aahhh In The Heights has the best soundtrack, especially when you're listening to it in the summer. I think the Washington Heights trailer was meant more for fans of the bw show, and the powerful trailer more for those who still need to be sold the story.

Thank you for this! I have not seen either of the trailers yet but will do so now. If I see any one movie in the theater this summer, it will DEFINITELY be "In the Heights"!! (On a side note, I haven't heard anything recently about when the new movie version of "West Side Story" is slated to premiere. Do we have any updates? I am also very excited about that production).

I agree!! I thought that was Daphne's voice saying we are not powerless we are powerful? I assumed it was Carnaval Del Barrio where Vanessa and Sonny sing "we are powerless we are powerless "?

Saw this on Mother’s Day, probably my favorite musical! Every change that they made I loved. Cinematography is fantastic, cast is amazing, carnival is incredible! No worries celebration of the neighborhood is its heart!

Even though I’m not Latino I still love the musical so much! The characters and stories (especially people like Nina or Usnavi) feel so relatable and I know it’s been ages since it came out but I still love it sm!

I also ugly cry when I watch the trailers- I'm a Hispanic theatre kid lmao. I live in New Mexico, and it seems like every single Hispanic/Latinx person in the theatre scene here had a similar reaction. Just to see the care and respect to not only the show, but our culture, is fantastic. Especially since Jon M. Chu isn't(at least to my knowledge) Latinx. I'm incredibly excited.

As someone who lives in a very small town in Spain, which isn't really a "musical" country at all, I absolutely loved theese trailers. I'm an inmigrant and the whole vibe of In The Heights strikes a very particular chord in me

(SPOILERS you have been warned) I saw it last weekend at an advanced screening and i LOVED it! It feels very human, like it feels like someone happened to record these people living their lives. They didn't feel like characters at all, and I genuinely cried when Abuela Claudia died. Washington Heights really feels like a actual neighborhood and the costumes feel look like something those characters would actually wear. The acting is superb and all the singing and choreography is beautiful. Also there's a little bit of wlw representation! It's subtle but there if you look for it. I think my only critique would be that suspension of disbelief is different between the stage and a movie so the ending of songs where the audience would clap felt awkward sometimes and I don't love the way it's set up. Like it's set up as Usnavi telling the story of Washington Heights to these kids and they're on a beach which at some point makes you think that you know the ending but there's a twist and it just felt less impactful? It made Usnavi telling the story feel weird because how could these kids not know the story of their neighborhood and at one point it makes you think that they don't know it's name, which I think is just one of those things that shifted weird from stage to screen. Edit: Patrick Page is in it too! The only white dude... He doesn't play a big role but he definitely adds drama Edit 2: The vibe between celebration and defeatist is fine in the movie. It's kind of like even when we struggle, we still have our people, our home, our culture to comfort us and no matter how much the system is rigged against us because we're immigrants and poc, we will shout who we are from the rooftops. Edit 3: (jesus I have a lot to say) It also depicts more modern/recent struggles of undocumented citizens, immigrants, second generation immigrants, and the lower class. It doesn't feel ham-fisted and fleshes out some characters really nicely.

I definitely haven’t seen the trailers but I am so excited for the movie and could care less about more trailers cause they sold me already XD but love watching you break it down
