I liked the costumes this season a lot more than last season, it feels like they embraced this regency inspired fantasy world they’re creating rather than pretending to be alternate history. Eloise’s hair was the only thing I truly hated. Like, if they wanted to contrast her day look from her ball look, why not a braided look or even a simple low pony tail. Or maybe pin her bangs back for balls and leave them down for the day. Her hair styling was fully out of place and not in a way that felt purposefully rebellious or off the beaten path, in a way that felt like it didn’t belong in this series.

As much as I appreciate that the entire show is premised in a fantastical version of regency London, I did expect to see at least a dupatta (shawl) incorporated in the Sharma dresses, and some more traditional embroidery styles like zardosi and chikankari. It is unclear what region of India the Sharmas are from ("Sharma" and "didi" for big sister insinuate the north, but "appa" and "Kathani" suggest the south - two very distinct cultural umbrellas) - but some specificity would have helped the costumes quite a bit. Is there Mughal influence? Kanjeevaram? Rajasthani? There's so much diversity in the subcontinent that could be utilised here. Cultural specificity means recognizing diversity within cultures, even if it takes a bit more effort. Like, imagine if I dressed an Italian character in a kilt and brushed it off as being a "European" outfit. Probably not ruinous to the show, but for anyone from those communities it is certainly frustrating. Also, some simple jhumka or chandbali earrings would've been MUCH appreciated. Indian jewelry can offer SO much more!

@@LadyRebeccaFashions especially when block printed cotton Indian fabrics are relatively inexpensive and there are tons available online. I did binge Season 2 of Bridgerton and loved it! I watch it as fantasy, so I expected the costumes to be way off of the period. The wild hair styles, especially of the Queen, were fun to see and the brightness of the colors of dress were amazing. There were scenes that looked like a flower garden on steroids! I really liked the content better this time too. I thought the writing was better and some serious acting was demanded of the actors at various times. The love scenes were better too. I thought the women were given stronger roles this time as well. Because of my watching this as fantasy, I think it was pretty good. Truly agree with the hats on Eloise and the other women. Truly sad. They could have been really fantastic with this period, but the producers took the easy way out and of course it was cheaper to make these hats instead of true period hats. Thanks for doing this review. Really enjoyed it alot!

I have watched the entire second series and agree for the most part with your assessment of the costumes. The only one I disagree with is Kate. No, I didn't like the poly satin either, but I thought the relative plainess of her dresses was less about her being set apart from her sister, and more about showing her character. She is forthright and practical and I thought her costumes reflected that. As for not reading the books, GO AHEAD! Season 2 veered widely from the plot line of the book with some major additions (the new Lord Featherington and the Modiste / Penelope plot for example). Take the two mediums as two different stories and enjoy them both 😆😆

I agree about the "pancake" hat that Eloise wore! I couldn't comprehend it when I saw her wearing it twice. Also agree that Kate should have worn more spencer jackets--it would have really fit with her character and seeing her wear them less throughout the season would have shown the change in character she was going through. The fascinator hats also threw me off a bit---I feel like they could figure out a creative bonnet that maybe doesn't cover the face so much if that's the issue. I definitely like it being described as Regency-core and the costumes certainly do make an impression with how beautiful they are. I am also happy that the bust-lines were corrected this season. I can't wait to see what they do for season 3! I also love the dress you made-it's so gorgeous! 💖

Season 2 felt more visually sumptuous, like the glamour and the colour was laid out for us to lap up, which I did! It felt more like Emma. 2020, more purposeful, than Season 1. Not that the accuracy compares At All to Emma. 2020, but that's the best way I could describe my feelings 🤔

Ok I loved what Netflix has done, but it's nothing like the books! Its worth the read. One you don't know who is Lady Whistledown is until it Penelope's turn to get Married. I was honestly shocked Penelopes dresses didn't cut across the bust still. In the books she was considered to be overweight and it was implied her mother purposefully had the dresses cut ill fitting on purpose to shame her into losing weight. She isn't supposed to glow up with her dressing until her story line when her mother stopped trying to get her married and thus stopped being so involved in her dress choices. Then again if what is coming out about next season is correct then the story is going to change significantly, so her clothes fitting correctly earlier may just be part of the adjustment they are doing for her and her families story line.

This season was just so much more aesthetically pleasing, even from the trailers the colour and costume update was incredibly obvious. I am gonna say that Kate's long fitted sleeves and shiny dresses do remind me a bit of the sleeves on many sarees and the shine reminds me of the silk in many saree's if there was no embroidery and patterns on it. I think it’s important to remember Bridgerton is a modern social commentary set in a created ‘period’ that is meant to challenge social norms- that’s partly why it’s mixed race casting unlike the books. There are several articles with Sophie Canale the shows costumer that address the Sharma costumes- noting as society accept the sisters; society begin to adopt Kate’s tulips sleeves, Edwina’s bell sleeve through the progression of the show. Of note, almost all of Kate’s costumes are made from sari.

I have to admit that I watched Season 2 in a single sitting, 2 days later I had completely forgotten what the whole thing was about, who had been in it, and how it had ended. I have watched it again since, but still think that the production was even shallower than the first and did not have as good performances as Season 1. Costume-wise there were still so so many errors. Britain is run and organised by the military, all the men should largely have been in various uniforms with the right matching headwear. Refer to Zack Pinsent for a relaxed look, but he certainly does the headwear perfectly. For the ladies the costume department must have decided to either stick to previous patterns, as with Lady Featherington, or else stick to the same 2 design options in a variety of vaguely similar fabrics. The ladies in the ballroom, riverside, and pleasure garden scenes were like identical press-glass shapes of a Woolworths crystal chandelier. I don't need to mention the ghastly headwear the ladies were objected to, they might as well had worn top hats too and no-one would have been the wiser. Or, are we all expected to run around parks this summer with fascinators made from multicoloured plastic straw bent and woven into teeny bizarre shapes, decorated with more artifice, plastic flowers, feathers, er al?

Since Kate was (I think) born and raised in India with two Indian parents, I didn't know if they were bringing Indian inspiration and traditional dress touches to her wardrobe and the wardrobe of her family. After a google of Saree blouses - I'm fairly certain that fitted sleeves or no sleeves are...normal? And flutter sleeves might be trending. But my google fu is not the strongest in this department. IF I am right though, it would make sense for these styles to infiltrate the "more traditional" regency style of the rest of the cast after the diamond is named

To the point of Queen Charolette not wearing the correct period of dress: I think this was a plot point that was briefly acknowledged in this season. *if you have not watched don't read this**spoilers** I believe that she wears these clothes on purpose because of the king. His mental health is very important to her and it would make sense that she would do almost anything to keep him happy. He continues to recognize her throughout the show and calls her beautiful. Even during his confusion that mimics the idea of alzheimer's or dementia. If she changed her style, it could send him into a spiral of confusion that could be catastrophic. I think this was a plot devise and also a choice by the design team.

I kind of hated a lot of the women's hair styles at the balls, because they reminded me of the updos of the 1970s. They just reminded me of things I thought icky back in the day. If you didn't have the subtitles on (I do to help me understand the dialog better) , you might not have noticed the weird appropriations of modern pop songs that the dance orchestras were playing. I think I remember a Madonna song and also Alanis Morrisette, among others. Also, some of the dancing was very anachronistic, that is, distracting and wrong, to my ears. The show is diverting enough, but I can hardly remember anything about the storyline.

"Wish she was wearing a Spencer with every dress" pretty much covers how I feel in Empire waisted dresses.

💐Brilliant Bridgerton Season #️⃣2️⃣ Cos-Review. Yes, enjoyment rises once you accept it's Fantastical vs Historical. FYI: It's the same when you accept that 📺Shondaland's Netflix version is an extremely 🧁fluffy, light & confectionary version of the novels 📚. The TV writers have used a great degree of creative license to put their own fantastical spin🌪️on it. Yes, Julia Quinn's books do fall within the parameters of the bodice-ripper genre & have fiery hot🔥 love scenes😳. Still, her story writing is amongst the finest examples of it's kind. It's not to be missed. 😉I've devoured a tremendous amount of romance material in my day〰️& this series remains at the pinnacle. Wouldn't recommend your waiting to delve in 📖! With the exception of ❤️passion portion❤️, Quinn remains remarkably faithful to the customs of the period. She respects it & receives high marks for those historic attention to details. She also delves drastically deeper on an emotional & interpersonal level with her characters that is highly enjoyable, engaging, & enriching. ✍️Through her loving lens, you'll 💯% fall in love❤️ with both the Bridgerton & Featherington clans without any reservation, and their whole enchanting world. 🤗Back to your review. Love your perspective on how the program departed on historic fashion detailing, & how you related that to actual sewing techniques. How some swaps you could accept, while others worked your nerves. 🙂Didn't mind the petal sleeves on the lead heroine as a dedicated design choice, but I would've liked it better had been kept to her alone. Her shiny skirts were pretty colorful too. 😖Have a more difficult time equating stand-out shades & high sheen with practicality. 🤔Do believe Spencer jackets are having a moment. Ultra short blazers are definitely cropping up. In ❄️Winter 21/22, we also saw some shoulder snugs from those earlier eras. They made a brief appearance in a variety of snuggly knits. Both a scarf & full jumper alternative for light layering. 🤞Hope we 👀 more of both in future. 💚 Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)

Based on what others have said about this season straying very far from the book, I think I'll hold off reading them till after they're all released. I get annoyed when film adaptations do that!

I said to a coworker I wasn't a fan of all the costumes in Bridgerton and my coworker was like "well it's not meant to be historically accurate" I was talking about the Queens costume, I think stylistically it doesn't work in the universe. To which my coworker was like "well its historically accurate" like pick an argument. Either it's not historically accurate so you can't say it's bad on historical accuracy or it is historically accurate and can be judge on it. I'd say the same thing if there was a universe where everyone is dressed in office wear and one character is wearing a summer dress, it's distracting and wouldn't make sense. If they wanted to make it part of court wear then everyone should be dressed in that style in court or nobody it.

One of my big pet peeves from season 1 (I talk about it in last year's video) is that the queen's costumes are not at all historically accurate! She wore regular Regency styles, except at court, where she wore the English Regency court gowns, not 18th c styles like in the series. The "pick an argument" thing was definitely how I felt about all their official statements about the season 1 costumes.

The tulip sleeves are a nod to the tulips that Anthony was to give his bride/tulips being for passion which he didn't want to do. He wanted a loveless marriage so Kate is wearing tulip sleeves to hopefully spur him into having some passion for Kate. Geez, read the books because you are putting your foot in your mouth not knowing the story lines.

Go be rude elsewhere. Filmed versions need to be able to stand on their own.

The ONLY reason I've watched Bridgerton was because I found it visually pleasing. I have no expectations of the costumes being historically accurate, and accept it's just a fantasy. I love the 'Regency style' and find it just transports me off the planet. I have to say Elouises hats were absolutely hideous, and although I loved the goegeous colours of Kate's costume, I didn't like the tulip sleeves and the shiney cheap looking super plain fabrics on some. Some of the costume aspects even I can see are definitely not of the time.

I totally agree with you, Eloise's hat is awful, what a îty for a beautiful person.

I love your jewelry. they look like a matching set, but the tiara may be lighter...is it a complete set? looks great with your coloring....no....don't read the books if you don't want to be disappointed!!! I was very disappointed with most of the story line in this season....with the exception of Kate and Anthony having a romance, the rest of the series stray way too far from the book if you are a fan, and frankly in this instance the book is better....I thought Kate's dresses looked like they went to party city and got them. which is weird cause all the others at least looked well made I don't know a lot about fabric but this shiny stuff looked cheap to me when compared with all the other dresses. I think the tulip sleeves were the answer to "something different", shying away from the puff sleeves, which is a mistake to me....I just can't get past the hair....no one wore those half up half down does, in the regency did they? unless they were a "loose" woman? wasn't a woman to have her hair up or at least covered in a cap or she wasn't respectable? I get that they want to connect with this generation but man most of us are ok with the hair all up....it looks like Eloise was the last actor to the hair and make up trailer and just got a face of makeup done and didn't have time to do her hair before reporting to the set....oh well, after I binged the whole season I re -read the book to wash away this season's butchering of a great story, which by the way will really mess with the books about Eloise and Pen. curious to see how they are going to write themselves out of that unfortunate corner....

Yeah, hair would have been fully up, with maybe a few curly tendrils loose, but that's it. And indoors, their heads would be uncovered, but outside, I think they pretty much always would have worn a bonnet during the day. And the jewelry isn't quite a set. I believe the earrings and necklace were both Charter Club brand from Macy's a few years ago, but the tiara is actually from AliExpress.

I HATED Kate's bridesmaid dress. To me that was the worst offender. It looked the cheapest of cheap out of all of her dresses but her hunting dress was *chefs kiss* out of all of her costumes that was my favorite.

they blew the story of Lady Whistledown up. she isn't exposed until the 4th book, and COLIN is the one to figure it out. Eloise doesn't get it as she misses the exposure completely by eloping. she's eventually told by Hyacinth (of all people!) and she really doesn't care all that much. the drastic over-reaction and the horrific wrecking of Penelope's room is to over the top and out of place. they screwed the pooch on that one. I also wasn't thrilled with Kate and Anthony having pre-marital sex out in the open. where any gardener, passer-by, or servant could find them. he'd be fine, she'd be shunned by society and considered a whore, light skirt, a fallen woman and she would drag her family down into infamy and shame with her. it made no sense to have it there other than to pander to modern societies over sexed ideas. why was Kate astride? why wasn't she side-saddled? women went on the hunt sitting side-saddled and performed extremely well. why did she need to flash so much thigh? sigh. the books are so much better.

Yeah, I was so sure that the reason they were out there was because someone was going to find them! I was very surprised they did that.

I *HATE* what they did to Eloise's character. The source material has many faults, but Eloise is strong in the books without being a strawman feminist. I had to turn off Season 2, Ep 1 when she's ranting to Penelope about Mary Wollstonecraft's Vindication of the Rights of Women, a book 20 years old at that point and probably as out of fashion as Fordyce's Sermons.

but they only use ONE pattern for EVERYONE. and they're wearing silk and satin as daywear, also I'm REALLY tired of all the beaded overlays on the gowns. sheesh. Lady Danbury is the only one who dresses properly.

It is a fantasy- but Lady Featherington’s dresses just pulled me out of the story every time- they were so different, she did not fit in the world they created IMO

I've been reading lots of historical fiction and romances for years. Brigerton is a disappointment. Looking at fascinators for hats in this time period was weird. Some of your better historical dramas feel like you're there at that time period.....Gentleman Jack, Gilded Age, Emma, Sandition. I wish some producers of TV didn't pander to audiences who wish for modern looks in past decades. The books are being changed. IMAGINE IF outlander or GOT was changed and diluted like these books. I never watched any of the producers shows on TV I should have and I would know what to expect. Thanks to the designers of other shows that bring historical fiction back....OK rant really over.

I have to disagree with you on Sanditon, but I can't wait for this new season of Gentleman Jack to start!
