When I was young in the 1960s, I learned the trick of turning the turntable speed up from 33 rpm to 45 rpm to make a bass part stand out. The pitch would change of course, but that was no problem.

@@DaveBirkett-o4w I never thought of this! We had a HUGE piece of furniture that held the stereo system growing up. Back when electronics *were* furniture

One thing I do when transcribing, even if it might seem counterintuitive: I'll start my analysis by listening to the song FAST and encapsulate the quick song form in my mind. Sometimes really interesting music takes a while for the phrases to bloom. When heard at 2x speed, those big developing themes become simple quick melodies in your mind. A "rooftop view" of the maze you're trying to unscramble. A mind map of the song. You just have to put those scales on the scaffold. From then on, playing it normal speed will feel like playing it too slow.

@@LearnJazzBasswithMattRybicki Yeah, it's like having a Cliff's Notes version of the tune, and you get the milestones in the song's structure under your fingers quickly. I started doing it in Transcribe+ when I was having to learn 10 new tunes a week. Huge help. Really love your channel Matt, always compelling stuff and presentation is top notch.

I think the lack of subtitles in this video was perfectly in tune with the topic. Another amazing job, I was always stuck in the idea of writing it down and didn’t realise I was already transcribing it, thank you very much. Actually writing it down is really harder than just being able to understand what is going on. In particular, I have not any problem if I listen to music and just try to repeat it on the instrument. If there is a sort of repetition I start even to immagine variations on what I’m hearing. So thank you a lot, it’s like you took down a chip from my shoulder. Looking forward to JazzBass101.

Great video as always, thanks! :-) I only really started properly transcribing last year (Dejection blues from Ray), and it was really eye-opening once I got into it, and obsessively had to do the whole piece. Not having listened to Ray's earlier stuff so much, your transcription was really interesting, you can easily tell how his style has evolved. At first hearing, there was still more emphasis on chord tones compared to his later stuff, and also being less busy with the triplets.

Great video! Thanks, Matt! You've definitely reassured me when it comes to feeling like jazz, and specifically for us, walking bass lines, can be a daunting task when you attempt to transcribe it. Be it the seemingly never ending onslaught swung quarter notes and some of these older recordings being difficult to hear in general. I've heard it referred to as "An old guy singing in the shower". I'm slowly working at it though 😅
