The "S" stands for servo, the type of motor that drives it and the "P" is for pulse, as in a stepper motor which is suppose to be faster, more precise and of course makes very little or no noise.

@@scaryjerryman Wrong!. In this lens marking context, "S" stands for (Silent Wave) specifying the type of Auto focus motor, where as "P" stands for Pulse motor as you said. Servo is for AF types as in AF-S, AF-C, AF-A. Both are different things even though Nikon's notation for both ideas uses same abbreviation which is confusing

Online from B&H Photo, it was a kit of (all used factory refurbished) D3300 body, AF-P 14-55 lens and AF-S 55-200 lens. At the time it was around $575, but I see that it now goes for about $650.

After watching your video I realized just how quiet the AF-P 18-55mm lens is. I just bought the new Nikon D5600 and thought the autofocus was not working so I went outside and manually un-focused on a plant then pressed the shutter button halfway down and sure enough it focused it in a second. Amazing! No noise at all.

The beauty of this lens (I have the AF_P model) is that it produces good image quality across a handy focal length and is a super lightweight, compact all round lens - excellent for walk around photos, at home, friends, relatives, street photography, landscapes - without lugging a heavy lens on an already heavy camera body. Super quiet auto focus works excellently for stills but not so good for movie close ups.

It's most likely legit, it probably just won't come in a nikkor box. And you'll always find lenses on amazon and ebay for almost half the price as listed. That's totally normal. Always read the item description and what comes in the box, though. Thanks for watching my video!

Thanx for the comparison man. I actually got my AF-P on July, pretty blindly cause there were very few reviews. I never had the AF-S version. I know the AF-P is faster and more silent on focusing, but what do they compare on image quality? I know they are kit lenses, but hey... :)

That has been my experience with these lenses too. The AF-P auto focus mech is great but the lens itself does feel even flimsier than the already flimsy AF-S. But for what one pays for one cannot complain.

Good review though it could have been done without the talk of the first minute or two. The noiselessness is great and well demonstrated. I would think it might have been better if the AF and VR buttons were still on the lens, it would make it a lot quicker to change. Has anybody used this witha 5200 after a firmware upgrade?

ABHISHEK KUMAR I honestly haven't used that lens before. But I do have a 55-200mm, and it's a great lens, so I'd assume the 70-300mm is just as good. Great for distant objects.

Got the lens with D5300 few weeks back but sadly I'm not happy at all. Most of my pictures turn out a bit blurry, not like crazy blurry but it's still noticeable and annoys me very much. honestly, I have no idea what the problem could be, without seeing it. Using a dslr takes time to get comfortable with, setting the focal points, aperture, shutter, all the good stuff. I'd just keep trying it out.

If you've got the older D90 like I do the new lens is useless. Plus new odd filter size, are they screwing us? I'm surprised the AP-S is audible, S is supposed to be Silent, right? Hobbyandtech yes, you can put the focus mode on full time servo for continuous focus, but there are draw backs. it will keep "hunting" for focus the entire clip. get annoying after a while. watch my second video on this lens for examples.

Daniel Georgescu thanks man. VR is 'vibration reduction', so it's a mechanism inside the lens that reduces vibration/blur in photos. Really, it's only useful in low light conditions with slow shutter speeds or moving while shooting, like riding in a car or walking.

Hi - nice video. I am planning to buy a new slr and came down to d3300. I am now confused with the lens set I should buy along with it. I have seen reviews of nikorr 35mm f/1.8 prime lens and it looks really promising. and for the zoom lens I would like to go with either 55-200mm or 70-300mm (need your recommendation on this). Now the question is if I have one 35mm f/1.8 prime lens along with a zoom lens.. do I really need to have the kit lens (18-55mm) or buying body only should be a good deal along with two lens stated above.

Kapil Jain those are good lenses, and I'd recommend having a collection of lenses for different purposes. I'd go with the 70-300 and a kit lens at first. so you have a big range of zoom, and eventually get the 35mm.

that could be a number of things. what camera you're using, what firmware version it has, what focus setting you have on, are you using the lcd or viewfinder? I explain a little more in my 2nd video about the lens. Just keep playing around with your camera and you'll eventually understand how it works. Other than that, I don't really know what to tell you. Hi. Well, that's alot of questions, and I'm happy to give an opinion. I'm by no means a professional, so these are just based on my experience. Here we go: the new lens is the AF-P, and I think it's the better one. It performs very well, even without the VR and manual focus buttons. Those are controlled through the camera settings now. The d3400 vs d3300: Better battery life, lighter, higher iso, and built in bluetooth. Other than that, same exact camera. So that's more of a personal choice, based on budget, and whether or not you need those new features. I personally won't be getting the d3400 over my d3300. Not worth the price to me. I'm looking more towards the d7300, but woa, $1500.00....eek! VR and image stabilization is the same thing. VR is a nikon thing. All camera brands have their own term/name for that feature. And I say it's definitely worth getting the VR versions. On a tripod, you don't need it, but you're not always on a tripod, so it's nice to have that extra stabilization. And finally, I would choose the the kit with d3300, 18-55, and 70-300mm. Very good range of zooms for different scenes. It prolly won't come with the af-p version, so you'll have to get that separately with the d3300 kits. And 50mm lens are pretty budget friendly too, so you can get that separately, too. That's strange because when I have it on Auto-Focus in Live View it will scan and try to focus on objects itself, but when I try to press the shutter button to help it focus on something it makes a sound. Not as noisy as the AF-S was but still a sound. Can you confirm when you get a chance to see if yours does the same (the AF-P). TIA

Superboy yea, in live view it's different. In the 'full time servo' mode, it will always hunt for focus. You can turn that off, single servo, So it only focuses when and on what you want. I don't have a noticeable sound when it focuses, though.

Yeah I think it would only make a sound in live view if you press the shutter button to focus. Otherwise if it's focusing on it's own it won't make a noise when focusing.

what camera are you using? I actually had the same issue with my d3300. Using live view fixed it, but using the view finder, I had to use the auto focus, then I could adjust it from there. I'm sure it has something to do with updating my camera's firmware.

AF-P lenses are compatible with D3000 series cameras from the D3300 onwards, D5000 series cameras from the D5200 onwards and D7000 series cameras from the D7100 onwards. Also supports D500. So your D5000 is not supported.

Henry Jacobs , one has VR (vibration reduction), the other doesn't. if you mostly use a tripod, the vr isn't needed. It just helps with small movement while taking photos. I usually turn mine off, especially with faster shutter speeds. image quality, sound and overall quality are the same on both.

CarsonKeegen I would recommend the af-p for all uses. better video for sure, but the focus speed is great for pics too. fast and accurate from my experience!

Rich Henly I would focus all the way out then pull back slightly for ♾ focus. It's one of those "learn as you go" things. The more you play with it, the better you'll get.

jiwan biswal I would honestly go for the d5300, because of the flip out screen. It makes it so much easier when making videos to see what you are doing. Other than that, they are basically the same camera.

Zoodoo Piper if you set the focus to fulltime servo, yes. But it hunts for focus alot. my second video about this lens explains some of that

Zoodoo Piper yea, as far as good auto focus on dslr cameras, it's definitely in the more expensive ones, or mirrorless. my d3300 doesn't auto focus very well when filming.

Focus hunting is still so bad.. so I don't think AF-P has much of an advantage 'coz anybody doing serious video would already be focusing manually. Save the dough unless you're buying as a kit.
