You are very right now that I looked it up. Makes sense, but also why would they only do a single gigabit link when you could saturate that with AC traffic? I feel like some sort of trunking for that should be implemented. Thanks for the catch, I'll be sure to annotate the video!

AFK Tech I tried searching for that answer with no luck. Maybe you need to reach out to Ubiquiti to tell them your a reviewer and need answers (and maybe some products to test)

You could but the problem is the bridge port don't pass through any power making it mostly worthless other than saving a cable run for some stationary device that has its own power.
@msh10448 жыл бұрын
Not only that, but the passthrough link it only 100mbit and has no POE ( power over ethernet ). I'd recommend seperate cables for seperate ubiquity wifi spots.
@johnttracy8 жыл бұрын
They don't aggregate because even though the radio is capable of doing over 1Gbps, this is in lab conditions, not at all real world. You will not saturate a 1Gbps line with AC. AC Wave 2 comes close, but still fine. blog.ubnt.com/2016/12/15/will-hit-limits-gigabit-ethernet-wi-fi/

I'm new to Ubiquiti and the first difference I've noticed and don't like is that you can't manage the AP from the router's console. I come from a Sonicwall background and that's an excellent feature I wish Ubiquiti had.

Seems like you have cable runs going through the walls from your server room already, you should really try to mount the AP to the ceiling, as that's what they were designed for and you will receive optimal performance. I see that your performance is pretty good now, but it can be better with better mounting.
@herefobeer7 жыл бұрын
It's a fairly lower gain 3 dBi antenna, so the span is higher than other commercial ones. The difference should be minimal when keeping on table vs ceiling mount. Most difference will only be felt if in same room, which is not particularly what he is looking for. Furniture height table would make it as good as it can be.

I installed this at a customers house. She has a Charter Modem, a Sagecom Router, and we installed this AP on the opposite side of the house. This is my first time installing one and I kept running into the same problem. When I changed the name of her 2G and 5G signals to the same name that her router had (on the "connect to wifi" screen on my phone) I kept getting 2 of the same named networks showing up, one from her router, and one from the AP. I only want the router to be an extension of the router, with only one network to log onto but where we can walk around the house and be connected to the router if closer to the router, and then connection be switched to the AP if I leave router range. We were told by tech support that this isn't possible and I needed to disable router wifi and only use the wifi coming from the AP, but the AP is on a far side of the house and I was worried about range. I have installed one a longggg time ago and I was able to get it to work so I know its possible, any suggestions? Also in the future we will be doing more jobs like this but possibly using multiple AP's, and its only going to be residential so is the Pro model overkill? My understanding of networks and everything is limited since I am just starting so any help would be great. Thanks.
@gurizeigerman37755 жыл бұрын
Is the UAP wired via ethernet to the router? It's possible to use it as a "range extender" but you need to have the network name and all security the same, so you can roam but it will only connect to the other when out of range of the first I believe. Otherwise, you need to get a 2nd AP pro, disable the router wifi, and use only AP Pros via uplink to have the same network in the same facility.
@hiddenidentity82916 жыл бұрын
The second port is for daisy chaining, and does not support LACP or LAGG (thus cannot be used for expanding the uplink throughput) In respect of saturating a GB connection- in the real world you're not going to saturate that with a 1700mb AP.

You can rename them and see if they appear differently. If the SSID for 2.4 & 5Ghz is the same, your device will merge them. When you try to connect, it'll pick the best one (and if 5Ghz is working, it'll pick that one of course)

Could you use that second LAN port to connect to a small switch? I have structured wiring in my 2 story+basement home. Everything from the service provider is in the basement, Modem/WiFi Router going to a Gigabyte Switch then hardwired throughout the home. Right now I have a small 5 port switch that connect my Xbox One, Roku, A/V Receiver and Android box on the second floor (where I am aiming to add an AP to get better WiFi signal). Could I move the main connection to the AP Pro main port and then connect the switch to the secondary port? This would save me a lot of effort from running another cable from the basement to the second floor.

Also another question is since this is just an access point and not a router: If the current router can accommodate up to 10 wifi devices, will this access point be limited to 10 wifi devices as well? If not, to how many?
@MarcoBoers7 жыл бұрын
If the dhcp server of your current router can provide more than 10 ip addresses (most can provide 200-255 by default) then you can connect more clients than the limit of your router. The ac-pro is said to handle up to 450 clients if enough ip addresses are available.

seems a bit overkill to use a AC Pro for a sub 20Mbps speed. Why did you go this route instead of the UAP-LR?
@adrianborinsky29897 жыл бұрын
Why would you go UAP-LR when you can get the UAP-Lite with same performance? The LR is suppose to have longer-range but it's not that useful when outbounds can't ping back, your phone will see the network from a distance but won't be able to connect to it. IMO the LR is a gimick, Lite and Pro are best for home/office respectively
@hall012356 жыл бұрын
Just noticed your comment and my mistake - I was referring to the UAP-AC-LR which is an updated model from the original UAP-LR. With that you do see a boost due to the antenna design that I've found noticeable after replacing my pros.

Hi there, nice intro/video. 2 questions: 1) Does the secondary port needs to be connected to a PoE as well ? Or just not at all ? 2) I have 2 UBNT AC PRO access points, but 1 of them is connect ONLY via 1 UTP (PoE) - The second I can connect with 2 UTPS. Would that be a installation/configuration option in case I want thel to share a single SSID and use the Zero-Handoff feature? Because once I conntect the second with 2 cables, it gets "ISOLATED" Thx !
@bnr32jason7 жыл бұрын
The secondary port doesn't need to be used at all. It's there for if you WANT to use it, but you don't have to. Ideally you don't want to daisy chain your AP's (if that's what you are doing), you want them on separate switch ports. If you want zero-handoff to work well, same SSID, exact same encryption, and same channel as well. Once that is configured, you will have what you want. But if you daisy chain them from the same cable you will limit the speed of both. If you aren't a heavy user with multiple devices streaming simultaneously, it's not a big deal, but I ran separate cables for each of mine just to ensure no issues in the future.

Hi Jason, Okay, I do understand now the meaning for the 2d port. I got mine into the switch again. So, one AC connected via 2 switch port. I believe that created a loop in the network. (not knowing the AC was just bridging between them ... ) Many thanks for you reply and feedback ! Really helpfully ! Cya

Stupid question.. i apologize.. I have an apartment and I can get 100 mbps download on all my devices... do I still need the unifi? The whole purpose of an access point is to get a stronger wifi connection and patch up dead spots correct?
7 жыл бұрын
The whole point of an access point is to provide wireless access to your network, full stop. If you are asking if the AC PRO is faster then the AP in your modem, maybe, maybe not. What it definitely is is much more stable(no need to frequently reset, more consistent speeds) and probably more fully featured.

In my experience they are pretty bad at 'punching' through walls. I tried the NanoHD and the AC Lite. For the AC lite the speed through the wall was 50 Mbps, my R7000 on the exact same spot got 303 Mbps through. So these products are not a magical solution for good Wifi. You really need multiple AP's before these products start making sense.

Your 100%. These are Corp building / multi ap devices in a lot of cases. They don't punch through walls but handle many many many users of concurrent access at mid to high speed.

Forums require a bit more maintenance than just the software on a server. Unfortunately, people will break rules, be dicks, etc. Not saying don't do it, just be sure you want to do it. Also, if you use PoE in one of the ports, does the PoE port drop to 100Mbps and the second port full speed at 1Gbps?
@AFKTech8 жыл бұрын
Yeah I'm really seeing if there would be any interest. I don't want to start something that 5 people would use. And I'm not sure what you're asking, with the injector that is included it's 1Gbps for me. I think the second port (I incorrectly explained in the video) is just there for passthrough, I'm also not sure if it actually passes the POE through or not.

Oh, okay, so there is only one 1Gbps port at the 802.11ac has a higher bitrate than the network connection?
@AFKTech8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'm not really sure why they wouldn't consider adding a bridge port when the wireless can "hypothetically" saturate a gigabit port. Maybe the "hypothetical-ness" of the 1Gbps+ speeds on AC is why.
