I loved this video. My brothers (I have three, all younger) had a Hornby train set bought for them by our Aunt who worked for Hornby in the late 50s and 60s . My dad got some wood and made boards that could be dismantled and they would lay them out, with the tracks attached in our living room. They played with the set for hours. Fortunately for me, as the only girl, I had my own bedroom and I spent many happy hours there NOT playing with trains. My youngest brother has some of the original set in his loft, sadly they're not in the best condition but they bring back happy memories for all of them .

1:33 That brought a smile to my face, I've got Hamilton Ellis's British Railway History, both volumes. I normally find history books as dry as dust, but Hamilton Ellis is an excellent writer, I've read them cover to cover many times. Many modellers choose to model a particular site at a particular date, as historically accurately as possible, which leads them sometimes into detailed historical research. I'm not a modeller but I am on one mailing list, and quite commonly one sees questions such as "Which specific engines would have worked the Atlantic Coast Express through Wadebridge in 1962?" because they're building a layout.

A great start to the new channel! I was train mad as a kid and my grandfather built a set for me in his (asbestos! Yikes!) garage, got a lot of fond memories and i still have the pieces to reuse one day. A few hobby suggestions: Miniature wargaming - Warhammer is the biggest 'brand' (it's the Hornby of the hobby), but I think wargaming overall might be better as a topic, as it's got so much variety: historical, fantasy, sci-fi etc Table-top card games - Magic the Gathering, Pokemon etc Re-enacting - historical reenactment societies can be found all over the country and are fascinating. Geo-caching - essentially treasure hunting, but you leave the 'treasure' where you found it, adding your name/identifer to it for the next person to find.

What I can't imagine is the dedication, the time and money you would have to spend, on building the entire set, all the landscape and buildings and fine detail. Girl Gone Louis Theroux? It's cool - I dig the new format. If you fancy some suggestions: * Warhammer/Figurine painting/modelling - kinda similar to model trains, but "artier" - I've seen some really crazy work - just have a look at Geeks Workshop/Games Workshop store windows, they're crazy. * Record collectors/fares - whole bunch of variety there. Some cool physical shops still in existence just about. + there's a bunch of niche music scenes from 50s revivalists to punk to Soul etc. * Restoration projects could be kinda cool. Enjoyed the video, camera-work made me a bit sea-sick at times, but it's good content - wholesome content + I learned some stuff, interesting what Waterman touched on - I'd have been interested to hear more of that +I think you could go for longer form/videos comfortably. As a note, I think there's a space in the youtube market for people doing longer form stuff/comfy(ish) viewing that's not too or at all political.

As you've done model railways, you could meet some of the people who volunteer on full size preserved railways, doing everything from driving engines to repairing trains to track laying to staffing stations. The Keighley and Worth Valley Railway in Yorkshire would be an interesting place to visit, because they have a strong programme of encouraging teenagers to volunteer on the railway, and you will find volunteers of all ages (some other railways have mainly older and retired people volunteering). EDIT: The KWVR also has some female footplate crew working on the locomotives.

The most popular tourist attraction in Germany, with 20 million visitors since it opened, is Miniatur Wunderland. The largest model railway in the world. They don't just have trains. There's miniature opera houses, pop concerts, an airport where planes take off and land, sea ports, mountains etc. There's Las Vegas too. Their latest attractions are Patagonia, where the Drake Passage has giant waves, and Monaco where they have F1 racing. Germany and Austria are well ahead where it comes to digital technology in model trains too. I don't have 'a lot of buttons' on my Austrian Z21. I use my tablet or smartphone, and wireless handsets too. You touch a photo of a loco and use a slider for speed etc. In Japan, where people have very limited space, the track is made to be taken up every day. The most popular scale there is N 1/160/ The most fun I ever had at a model railway exhibition was operating a digital crane. The WORST thing about model railway shows is inconsiderate people wearing backpacks. They'll knock you off your feet if you're not careful. Take a carrier bag guys!!

What a great idea for a new channel, couldn't subscribe quick enough. I'm very involved with Croquet and would be very happy to show you that world, the season is almost over now so it would be something for Spring or Summer.

In a word. Brilliant! Thank you Kalyn. My daughter wanted a train set from a very early age, with only a little influence from her father.

I was adopted by my grandparents, my grandfather after the war worked on Great Western Railways for a while, that got him his love of railways, and that turned into a love of, and passion for model railways. When I was 10 my fondest memories are of working with him on his model railway. We lived in Swindon (railway enthusiasts will understand the significance of GWR). At a model railway event in about 1975 I was running my grandfathers layout whilst he went for a cuppa, an old man, a bit scruffy looking, came to have a look. We chatted for about 10 minutes about different aspects of the layout, it turned out he was the Rev. W Audrey, author of the Thomas the Tank Engine books. If you want a niche hobby, that used to be done by EVERYONE, both in the UK, America and pretty much around the world, but is now practiced and popular with a tiny minority of very dedicated people it's writing with fountain pens. Now you might think how much is there to consider: pen, ink, paper. But as people who start using them discover it's a rabbit-hole of a hobby: paper grades/sizes, multitudes of ink colours, pen filling systems, vintage vs modern, hobbyist pen makers vs international manufacturers, different script types drifts into calligraphy, and from there you go into nib types, shaping/grinding for different writing styles, italic, cursive italics, flex nibs, and of course there's envelopes, sending interesting stamps internationally, and wax seals. I went on a quest to find the perfect blue ink, at one point I had over 125 different blue inks, it was a futile quest there's far too many variables to get a "perfect" blue ink. Once I realised that, I got over it and reduced my collection to just 30-40 blue inks. 😁 It's not limited to any one demographic, the US is probably has the most fountain pen users, but they're everywhere. The number of people sending letters written with fountain pens might shock you, and the values can be genuinely staggering. Just an idea for a future episode, if you run out of niche hobby ideas.

Great start to this channel, the mixture of interview and narration gives me the vibes of some of the tv shows I'd watch as a child but for adults, and hearing people talk about their interests is always fun. As for model railways, my dad was really into them, though he went in and out depending on space available (and had a brief period where he was into miniature steam engines rather than model railways - Some of which were trains, but other of which were these miniature models that did various things on a cycle when fed coal. Those are the only ones he didn't let me play with when I was a kid). Never had as elaborate a layout as my neighbour, who converted an entire room into a layout, his were on a table in a room being used for other things, or - in his last layout before he got too ill to continue - a... Z gage, I think... layout that fitted inside a glass table that he was able to get out when he wanted to modify it. All used DC rather than DCC for control.
