Bob, next time you are in the beauty supply store buying files, look at the cuticle nippers. They might work getting the snap rings off of the light fixture. They are like a pair of pliers, easy to grip, but those little nipper blades might be sharp enough to get up under the rings.

I've found it easier to get the little snap ring off than getting it back on. I found that a spark plug socket makes it so much easier to push to ring back in place. The wire fits through the hole and the end of the socket is just the right size to allow you to tap firmly with a hammer. The open bulb end of the light can then rest flat on your worktable for more stability because it does take a little bit of balancing to get even pressure on the ring. Works for me.

I too have used that method.Nothing changes the fact that the small ring is from somewhere below the 9th layer of Hell...

You left out my favourite part of doing this job and that is that the snap rings have a habit of flying off and either hitting one in the face or sailing across the room and landing in some out of the way place where they hide under a heavy piece of furniture.

LOLROTFL. Brilliant!! I can picture it now. I bet Roscoe is smart enough to get outta there when Bob gets one of those lights out!

you need to make a tool for removing those rings!

A sledgehammer, perhaps?

What fresh hell is this? Not going there, going to use overhead exterior light instead and save my sanity. Thanks for risking blood loss for us.

Right? I'll insist to the day I die that Singer never intended these to be serviced...

I've got a box full of these lights, all with badly deteriorated insulation. Fear of blood loss has kept me from dealing with them. *shudder*

I have a few more as well...

Aaargh - they look like monsters. How did you get it off in the end - just try, try and try again until it finally popped off? I agree that Singer weren't evil, but it looks like they might have had an enemy agent infiltrate the design team... Can you imagine how the service people must have groaned any time a machine with one of these came back to the shop because the light wasn't working?!

It flew off, bounced off the wall, and I was on my hands and knees for about 10 minutes looking for it before I found it on the other side of the room. It wasn't pretty, involved a lot of profanity, and in general, wasn't "family friendly" entertainment.

@@BobFowlerWorkshop Yep. Been there, done that. Next time I'll put the whole thing in a plastic bag and then work on it. I'll also wear safety glasses. Talk about over-engineering something. Those snap rings are strong enough to tie down a battleship in a hurricane.

Does this style of light, light the work well when sewing?
@BobFowlerWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
I guess they work OK. I use other types of lights as I like to really flood the area and see what I'm doing.

I usually leave out the glass lens and put in an LED if I can find one that fits.
