Mick Rock is a legendary music photographer often dubbed "The man who shot the seventies". He's worked extensively with Syd Barrett, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Peter Gabriel and Andy Warhol.
I had the chance to site down with Mick at the Sunset Marquis in Hollywood to discuss his career.

My name is Ted Forbes and I make videos about photography. I’ve been making photographs most of my life and I have a tremendously deep passion for photography that I want to share with you on KZbin.
The Art of Photography is my channel and I produce photography videos to provide a 360 degree look into the world of making images. We all want to get better so lets do this together!
I make videos covering famous photographers, photography techniques, composition, the history of photography and much more.
I also have a strong community of photographers who watch the show and we frequently do social media challenges for photographers to submit their own work. I feature the best and most interesting on the show when we do these so come check it out and get involved!

If I could like this video 100 times, I would. High art is great and all... but the rock and fashion photographers from the 60s/70s are just on another level for me. How fortunate can you be, to spend your youth photographing these people. I wish Brian Duffy were still alive for you to interview him... But hey, Annie Leibovitz is still around! ;) Come on Ted!

Apart from the "ooh I did drugs and got to hang out with famous people" what I liked about this interview is how he explains how he got into it. The way he found his style and how he used what was available at the time. And the respect he has for people. Great video!

This is such a breath of fresh air after all the photographic lens this and DSLR that....... mucho utube wallpaper, then all of sudden this video. Everything that I lived through in that era, the hope of new a future, the music, the sense of change, the charisma, the originality and talent. It was without a doubt my epoch!..........and somehow it all faded.............and feel of change faded. This interview with the appropriately named Mick Rock shows us the most interesting thing about the world, "rock stars" the catching of the moments and sharing them complete with their stories of madness and excess. You did well to bring us that!

Wow! What a great interview! I would love to see a follow up (extended) interview with Mick. I would enjoy watching & listening to him prepare for a shoot, discuss a bunch of individual photos he took over the years (the stories would be great), and have him talk about what he does day in day out. Mick Rock is a very interesting character!

Although I've always loved those early 70's musicians photographs, I didn't know anything about Mick Rock until recently, which means that I wasn't aware that must of those photos of Bowie, Joan Jett, Blondie, were all taken by the same man, and I really appreciate the intention to focus the interview on photography more than to limit the talk to a recap of memories.

Great interview! Norman Seeff is another photographer, "who shot the [musicians of the] seventies", however mostly in a studio environment. He also videotaped many of these studio sessions, being especially interested in creativity itself and the individual artists' personal attitude to creativity and her or his creative process.

Congrats with this interview, Ted, it's not at all obvious to get in the position to do this! I'd like to do a similar interview with Philip Newell, a kind of counterpart to Mick Rock, but on the side of the technique and sound capturing. Philip is a great guy as well, lived in the same time, and listening to Mick, I hear -in a different voice :-) - Philip talking. They must have had a really great time back then...!

RIP Mick Rock - a seminal figure and a great photographer. It's got me wondering what were his very first commissions: here's my candidate - SAM PARRY / IF SADNESS COULD SING on UK Argo (a Decca subsidiary), from 1972: the photography and design are credited to Mick Rock. Sam was a hippie folk/blues singer/songwriter, and this was his only album, that sold in tiny numbers ... it's now one of those 'holy grail' albums for collectors in the folk/psych area ... I have a near-mint copy, and on the rare occasions a copy comes onto the market, it goes for around the £700-plus mark. Sam's an old friend of mine down here in wild Wales, and I still see him occasionally. Mick's design is completely conventional: a colour shot on the front of Sam sitting in the doorway of an old windmill, and a couple of b/w portrait shots on the back. It's easy to locate online - just google the title. So there we go ... I'm not aware of an earlier Mick Rock LP cover, but maybe someone out there can prove otherwise!
