I feel like this really represents what he’s been through and now he’s accepted that he wasn’t a disappointment. It was just his mother being his mother and being disappointed in herself for having a son. It was a first born because she wanted a daughter so it’s not his fault it’s her fault for being such narrow minded also an absent minded mother. That’s my personal opinion.

That's a really good theory. But in my A.U, Marybeth is William's second wife. Michael's mother died and William remarried so Evan and Elizabeth are Michael's half siblings. And that's why Marybeth never liked Michael. Because he wasn't hers.
