I was headed to a meeting to give a presentation when this song came on. It got all up in my spirit! When I got there, this is what I talked about. I told those teachers.... "let your light shine!" Thank you , Brother Joe Berry and others for reminding us all. Don't let your light go out! Hey Hey!!

The allegorical concepts of tradition African American hymns are unmatched by any other religious culture tradition. Though they had little word variations in the lyrics, the songs were so powerful and meant so much. They’d preach a sermon right there!

I can hear my old people say sang em' boy. We need to go back every now and then to this type of singing.

Why do they stand up mid verse then sit back down?

Gotta be there to get it. My pawpaw was a sharecropper down Mississippi and when I was a kid he would take Maw down to her church then he and I would end up at one of those old white clapboard churches off in someone’s cotton field . The joy of being there was what I remembered. And so when I’m way older, our family started to attend an all black church. I’ve never been so blessed. The love of Yah lives in His people and when we sing, we love out loud. You just can’t be still.

It's a community experience - congregational singing - standing up is like a form of support -- not just singing along but also standing alongside.
