As far as Christmas action movies go, most would say John McTiernan’s Die Hard takes the crown as the greatest of all time. However, another action classic that hit theaters a year before, Lethal Weapon, is also set around the holiday. Written by a young Shane Black (using the Christmas setting that would become his trademark), this wound up being perhaps the most influential action movie of all time, maybe even more so than Die Hard (although that’s debatable). While not the first buddy cop movie (older films like Freebie and the Bean and 1986’s Running Scared are also part of the genre), it set the tone for many films to follow. There was something so perfect about the pairing of Mel Gibson’s crazed Martin Riggs and Danny Glover’s family man Roger Murtagh, along with Richard Donner’s ace direction. The three men loved each other, and that genuine affection comes across on-screen and off, with Glover and the late Donner always loyal to Gibson even as he became more controversial as time went on.
In this episode of Revisited, we look back at Lethal Weapon to see how the Gibson/Glover pairing as Riggs and Murtagh wasn’t always a sure thing. We examine the fantastic supporting cast, which included a slick Gary Busey, soul singer Darlene Love, Tom Atkins, Mitchell Ryan, and more, helped make this a classic, albeit one that’s harder-edged than you may remember. This will be the first in our ongoing Lethal Weapon retrospective, which is written by Cody Hamman, edited by Juan Jimenez, and narrated by Travis Hopson.
Let us know if you watched Lethal Weapon over the holidays, and keep an eye out for Lethal Weapon 2 Revisited soon!

By the book Murtaugh lets Riggs fight Joshua & when he’s got his legs around his neck he yells “Break his f***ing neck!” Riggs the titular Lethal Weapon who’s killed so many reiterates what he was told in the Christmas tree lot when he almost blew Anthony Kiedis’s coke dealing dad away “He’s not worth it “ That, Murtuagh finally letting Riggs drive,& Riggs gifting of his selected suicide bullet to Rog for Xmas are the 3 biggest character developments

When the tv show came out i found myself following the emotions of Riggs in the show and by the end of season 2 i was a lot better just as Riggs was. Good shows do more for the world than one my realize. However 48 Hrs and Beverly Hills Cop were the first real action comedies ever done where the action, drama and humor had equal weight. Also Lethal Weapon wasn't the first buddy cop movie ever there had been a few in the 60s and 70s, however Lethal Weapon perfected it and redefined it. It's definitely one of the all time best buddy action comedies ever along with Midnight Run, Red Heat, Rush Hour and Bad Boys.

The thing about the first Lethal Weapon is how it works as an action film and as a procedural. Murtaugh and Riggs are following leads and interviewing POI’s, right up until everything goes pear shaped. When this happens, the movie seamlessly shifts into an extremely effective action-thriller. "Whattaya say Jack! Would you like a shot at the title." This movie was a first for both star Mel Gibson, who was getting his first Hollywood Blockbuster - shooting him to stardom and Shane Black, who was making him screenwriting debut with this film. Both this & Lethal Weapon 2 are the best entries in this franchise. Also it has been said that Director Richard Donner is the only person who can stand up to uber producer Joel Silver. Whilst it didn't create the buddy cop movie, it did perfect it for the movies that followed. Its connection to Dirty Harry is beautifully done. It is ironic about the Edge of Darkness temp music track as Mel Gibson would star in the big screen remake in 2010.

The Lethal Weapon films are special in that they have amazing continuity. The actors, the supporting actors and even some minor characters keep carrying over into the next films in the franchise. When most action films shed characters from previous entries, Lethal Weapon was like a big party bus that just keeps picking people up. Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Joe Pesci, Steve Kahan, Mary Ellen Trainor, Darlene Love, Traci Wolf, Damon Hinds, Ebonie Smith, Rene Russo, the list goes on. Not to mention much of Donner's entourage of creative and collaborative support carries over. J. Michael Riva, Jennie Tugend, Michael Kamen, Marion Dougherty and so many more just keep coming back. That is why there are no weak movies in the franchise. You can prefer some more than others, but they're all rewatchable, and none of them sold out to become direct to stream geezer teasers. RIP Richard Donner

I saw a comment stating had Salkind never get rid of Richard Donner halfway through making *"Superman 2,"* the next two films would've came out much better. I agree. But him being "released" was kind of a blessing in disguise as he gave us *"Ladyhawke,"* *"The Goonies,"* *"Scrooged,"* and of course the *"Lethal Weapon"* franchise. Richard's resumé is damn impressive. Edit: I'd like to see a background on a little known "buddy cop" film which predates *"Lethal Weapon"* by a few months, a 1986 actioner called *"Running Scared"* starring Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines.

Love all 4 films! LW 2 is a natural continuation of the first film, Pesci was perfect. LW3 was in a way the most entertaining since it's the funniest, yet also includes the scene on Murtaugh's boat that shows the bond between the 2 cops. Though the first is my favorite, all 4 films are great in their own right.

@@matthewdaley746 I love all 4 films (maybe not as much the 4th) but I agree with you that the first is the best; I consider it the greatest action movie ever made. I assume you've seen the Director's Cut which includes the scene with Riggs vs. the sniper: "I'm still here, asshole... or do you only do kids?" It's tragic that that scene wasn't in the original release as I think it does an even better job of showing Riggs' character than the scene with the drug dealers in the Christmas tree lot. The sniper scene is one of the best scenes and the Director's Cut is an absolute masterpiece.

Dar Robinson's involvement with this movie is worth noting. At the time he was the greatest stuntman that ever lived and his influence in the industry is still felt today. He was brought in to handle the high fall stunts, Amanda's suicide jump and he doubled Gibson in the suicide jump. Richard Donner dedicated Lethal Weapon to Dar as he was killed shortly after production on another film. Pretty sure this is the only major studio film to ever be dedicated to a stuntman. His final appearance on film is in Lethal Weapon, he's the albino gunman who Riggs kills, falling from the rafters, tangled in the chains. The cable system that he uses for that stunt is the device that changed stunt work in films forever. There's great interviews with Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Gary Busey and Richard Donner talking about Dar in a documentary about his life.
