Lethargic Polaris 3900

Just ordered a new full rebuild kit, bearings, and tires. Didn't know about this water management unit until watching this video. I think I'll order this too. Thanks for the info. Would have liked it if you took the water management unit apart so we could see how it worked.

Took about 30 min to check water pressure at the Polaris connection (Zodiac G35 Pressure Tester and Super Pro 80960BU Pool Spa Filter Water Pressure Gauge, $25 from Amazon) and then replace water management unit (Zodiac 39-300 WMS Assembly with O-Ring Replacement, $35 from Amazon) on my Polaris 3900 Sport. Worked a charm!

I'm glad our video helped. It would be nice if Fluidra, (Polaris' Manufacturer), would take note to incorporate this information to their tech support database. They were of no assistance to us, nor were the 2 Polaris dealers we consulted (in Dallas). After a lot of trial and error my father and I derived the solution on our own, and I then apprised all 3 (Fluidra and 2 dealers) of the "real" solution. Unfortunately, I don't think any of them integrated that knowledge to their repertoire. Like the other poster Mike, we replaced several different parts before discovering the water management unit being the problem. Maybe Fluidra prefers to sell "more" parts that are unnecessary vs offering the customer the "real" solution ;-)

I really appreciate all the valuable comments here on fixing Polaris 3900 problems. It's too bad that we can't get the manufacturer to be interested in maintaining and disseminating such information. But, in lieu of them "not" providing us such "repair" information, the additional suggestions (via comments here) are at least "someplace" that a Polaris 3900 owner can come (on the web) to find solutions to his lethargic Polaris 3900 problems. I'd just like to clarify, that the problem, which I discuss in this video, is but only "1" problem that you can have causing your Polaris to become lethargic (to weak/slow to clean pool). So look at all the comments which others have posted here, which are just as relevant to "check for", and fix.

My P3900 was driving VERY slow, if at all. The problem here was not enough pressure was getting fed to the wheels. If you look at the 3:00 mark at that black extension on the right side of that ensemble with the small nipple pointing down...that is the wheel water pressure feed. It sometimes gets clogged or partially clogged and thus restrict the feed to wheels causing them not to slow. Stick a small pin in there and it will fix the problem!

I looked at mine today and it was leaking as expected. I have a question regarding what goes bad? I took mine apart and saw 2 O-Rings and a spring that could possibly go bad. I replaced the O-Rings, and it works better, but it still leaks some water. Is the problem the spring? I don't see any other parts that could go bad in the water management unit.

Steven, can you give brief instructions on how to enlarge the two holes that control water flow into the tail-sweep? Do you have to remove the water management manifold in order to do it? Thanks in advance.

A couple of other things to check are where the wall fitting plugs in some people have used the blue or red restrictor if you feel a small hole in the fitting you may remove the wall fitting and remove the restrictor. It could also be the pump cleaner impeller is broken or clogged. Also if your tail is not moving much it could have too much weight on it.

Do you know if the wall fitting pressure release valve should have water going past it all the time? Mine always has water coming out of the pressure release valve

So mine I tried turning the tail to adjust water pressure it doesnt turn easily but its not leaking water, the tail no longer sweeps I might just try swapping this part out and see if it does the trick

My brand new Polaris P39 was "lethargic" right out of the box and kept running into the steps -- same place all the time, the tail looks dead and doesn't even swivel. I think I should've just stuck with the P280.

Jamie, that’s what I did first (but failed like you). That’s when I started digging in deeper, and I found that the water manifold (big inside assembly) was broken at where the tail (with hose connected) on the Polaris was broken. When you start examining that area closely, you’ll possibly see water spewing out “around” that tail-hose verses going “through” that tail-hose. That “leak”, at that connection point, obviously causes a significant loss of power…therefore why I call the symptom “lethargic”.

I changed the part but it did not fix the proble. My impeller had a bearing whose balls had spilled out and it was rubbing against the side wall.. I ordered an impeller..fingers crossed

Yeah, the valve for the water leaving the hose is too small… undo four screws, take plate off water management system and make orifice look like a football with a file on both sides or you can use a dremel tool…… design defect in pool sweep not letting enough water to pass… looks like a half moon before you file it on both side…bottom line is the orifice is too small…. Polaris will never tell you how to fix it.. Polaris service is pretty pitiful…
