I just applied today to join Alphadrome- if I am accepted, I have some perhaps interesting and useful info to share... That site has already cost me $65; someone there identified Barbarella's pistol, and *good* spraypaint is expensive, but I found a NOS "Tommy Gun" water pistol I just couldn't resist, on eBay... everything fell into place, and landed on my VISA!

Hi John , just wanted to give some info on casting clear resins in silicone molds, clear resins usually don't like tin silicone molds, it tends to want to react to clear resins. It is better to use Platinum silicone for casting clear resin parts. New molds are usually fine but you can bake out molds if you like or even use a product called Composite Shield which is clear and will provide a barrier for casting your part . Platinum silicone is usually pink in color or Translucent looking. Smooth-On company makes some good products for casting clear resins . They also have some clear resin products that are awesome and water clear .
@Robothut4 жыл бұрын
Yes its all true. All my 100's of old silicon rubber molds from the past were done right. This was just a quick 1 off for the sake of the build video and using crappy expencive materials from the local DIY store. I did not want to make it a how to cast resin video as it would get to long and there are so many good youtube videos on how to do it right. Thanks for the comment and maybe some others will read it and learn from what you have said and go in the right direction.

I keep thinking about doing more of the Robby head mechanics but from here you kind of have to have a printer big enough for the large parts, I do not like breraking the big parts down to small jigsaw size bits then glueing them back together. But I might think of a way.

Hi John, What can I say....Wow !! This is amazing how fast you whipped ups this Gyro build, this is so cool ! I really appreciate your mechanical genius ! Your Robby builds are very exciting ! Always wanted to build these parts of Robby , I saw someone commented about a Sax valve build , that would be cool , I think that would require a stronger TT gear motor ? Awesome build !!!
@Robothut4 жыл бұрын
The screen used Sax valves were cast aluminum but if the they were 3d printed the mass would be low so a TT motor might do the job. The problem for most would be the size of the head part or display part to hold the sax vales would be quite large for standard home 3d printers. And then where do you stop the build ? Do you make the clear plastic detail parts that poke into the sax valve rest"s ? FDM printers can do truly clear so they would be frosted looking and hard to print.

Hi John , do you have any ideas for other videos related to Robby or Forbidden Planet ? If you don't do a Sax valve mini build , I thought maybe a miniature Krell lock would be cool to do , about maybe 10 inches in height with rotating lock . Builders could add soundtrack of ID coming , that would be pretty cool !
@Robothut4 жыл бұрын
Yes I thought about the Krell lock also. But I am working on a full scale Sax valve build that would have a 2 part frame to hold the Gyros unit, the wig wag and the sax valves. And one day maybe add on the ear scanners, Kind of a cut away of Robbys head so you can see inside and have the mechanical parts working. Just ordered some filament as the parts are large and fill the Prusa MK3 build plate. So once the materials get here I will see if it will work out.

I absolutely love this series on Robby! Thanks for this! Question on the original acrylic disk, are the grooves on both sides? Also what was the thickness 1/8, 3/16 or 1/4 inch? Do you have any PDF files with 2D drawings of these projects? I'd like to try to scratch build using original materials as much as possible. Again thanks for this series! Looking forward to more! Afterthought - what are your thoughts on the Starlog magazine poster blueprints for Robby?
@Robothut4 жыл бұрын
The grooves are only on one side of the screen used Robby Gyros, they are there to provide a way to paint in the white rings on the disc. You can view the STL files on any computer that has a program that can view STL files. My windows 10 machine has 3D Builder on it from the factory and can show the parts. But have some one print out the STL file called GyroDiscClearWirerings, for the origional design. The Star log drawing are not very good.

Hello Robot hut! This is a question for John, the block head of Robby and the shape of the dome? Is the dark areas on the back and sides of Robby’s head the actual dome painted? Or is the top of the clear done and the front area cut off as a separate piece from the back? Thank you for the information, I have a dome on order and it will be my first step to the Robby project. Thank you Jeff Jones
@Robothut2 жыл бұрын
The dome is painted on the sides and back. The done is trimmed to fit up over the front lip and over the fins around the neck base. Other than that, it is a solid one-piece dome.

Hello I tried to 3D print the files to make this and most went well. I am using simplify 3D The large drive gear and the gear to make the 3 disk turn printed but the gear teeth were not connected to the mane part. the teeth came off of both pieces. Does any one have the files that work?
@Robothut3 жыл бұрын
The files work, but simplify 3d does not work with all files. Use a better slicer like Prusa Slicer or Cura, you will have no problem . What is happening is the many of the STL parts are made of more than one part, joined together. Some slicers take these type STL files apart and do not let them merge.
@moultriemanicmechani7 ай бұрын
Are you still making these parts ? I work in traditional methods and don't have a printer ,I was interested in the light and the base piece , for it,in another giant steampunk alien cosplay
@Robothut7 ай бұрын
The STL files are free and posted on thing-i-verse for all to use as they see fit. Every town has people that are into 3d printing you could find them and have them produce the parts for you. Or there are online services that will do the job as well, but that normally costs more money than finding a kid at school that is looking for a project to do.

John, I just printed the DriveGearShaft and the gear teeth are not printing to the gear its self. Wondering if anyone else having this problem.
@Robothut4 жыл бұрын
Thats odd. I have printed 4 of them now, no problem. If you ran the STL threw a program other than the slicer then that would probably be the reason. What slicer are you using ? I used Prusa Slicer, it supports most all printers and works really very well.
@Robothut4 жыл бұрын
I might try down loading the stl from thing-i-vers and then print it, just incase something has gone wrong with the thing-i-vers upload. The gear files is made of 2 parts, does your slicer seperate the files back out ?
@Robothut4 жыл бұрын
I down loaded the DriveGearShaft file from thing-i-verse and ran it threw 3d builder and Prusa slicer to check for problems. It check out OK. So not sure what slicer you are using and why it would be having a problem.

What is the height from the bottom of the bell to the top of the light tower.
@Robothut3 жыл бұрын
Depending on what top lamp cover you print the height is around 155mm to 160mm, if I understand your question. You could just load the stl files in a viewer or slicer and get the lengh of the parts in question and add them up to be sure.
