Has the British Army come almost a full circle when it comes to Machine Guns and the GPMG?
The GPMG started service as our Light Machine Gun in the mid 60's then seemed to disappear from the Rifle Section, being replace with the LSW and then the Minimi, only to find its self back where it started in the Rifle Section! What was that all about?

Afghanistan proved that 5.56mm wasn’t effective when the enemy could take you on with a PKM and they were outside the maximum effective range of the SA80s. This is why the US army are now adopting the 6.8mm Sig Sauer M7 and I can see something similar happening with the British army in the not too distant future. Maybe the SLR will make a come back.

The Brits in the 1950`s saw the limitation of the big full cartridges and want a smaller round ; the 6.8mm (.280) in the EM-2/ TADEN guns.

My favorite GPMG story is from the Falklands War: The hills that ringed San Carlos Waters were bristling with RMs and paras with lots of GPMGs. So when the Argy jets came in, every man and his dog would open up on those jets. Until a request from the ships out in the bay came a request to stop that. Reason being, the jets had to come in very low, so the GPMGs were not pointing up but almost level. With the effect that thousands of bullets went out low across the bay, hitting ships out there.

Back in 91 on Op Haven (RAF) we were at a place called Silopi and when we went off base we had a choice of drawing an L1A1 or SA80 as our personal weapon, needless to say most of us chose the L1A1, so yes they (SLR) were still in use in 91. GPMG, I remember having to de-tracer and relink ammo belts before we went to 'Onion range' (Falklands) for training so we didn't set fire to the peat!!

When I was in uniform as a young man, 193 metres tall. I always carried the LMG. Funny move forward, in a war zone, outside the wire, 15 years later as a WO2 I was given an LSW, I also had an 9mm pistol, which I would sleep with under my pillow loaded. Happy days. Sorry can't go into further details but I spent the most of my time 76-2019 in civies!

I remember when I first joined battalion it was always the junior blokes who carried the gun, the GPMG for the uninitiated, and when I became the senior bloke in the platoon they'd changed their stance and wanted the senior blokes on the gun for the experience. As you can imagine I was severely pissed off with that, I'd gone full circle, started off carrying it and ended carrying the fucking thing. Thankfully I started moving up the ranks and my gimpy days were behind me.

That’s right. The SA80 was meant to come into service in 1980 that’s where they got the name for the weapon from but it was delayed because of some major design problems such as the breach block cracking and spitting when the weapon was fired on full automatic also it could not be fired by a left handed person because the cocking handle was attached to the breach block and would hit the firer in the mouth when the block flys back to eject the spent casings . It also proved to be crap during operations when it got wet or sand got into the working parts during operation desert storm the SA80 finally came into service in 1986/7

Used a few various machine guns Loved the SMG for ease if tasked as a driver well designed and very few stoppages, was No1 on the GPMG which was essential kit, as to the the LMG only used it on a few occasions and to be true I would take the extra weight and go for the GMPG . Had little experience with the SA80 as I was on the way out but the SLR with SUIT sight was my main weapon for most of my time, some hated the SUIT sight as it was not a great mount having to go on a modified top slide. Used some other weapons FAMAS F1, AK47, AUG, but swap them all for the SLR (the 7.62 round was what you needed to knock down your target. )

During basic not only did I have to learn the SLR, but some Cpl decreed that being 5' 6'' I had to learn the jimpy too! The bloody thing was nearly as tall as me! Oh, Happy Days! I think the bean counters in NATO finally realised that 5.56 doesn't cut it. Being hit by a 7.62 almost guarentees your target won't be getting up again anytime soon. Best Wishes Johnny

GPMG beats all hands down. For the Falklands we had extra GPMG's from other regiments, mega fire power. Besides, the platoon carried ammo for the GMPY team. I also liked using the [SMG] Sterling 9mm Submachinegun. People used MAG's from the Bren gun in Ireland to have extra rounds, however the spring wasn't made to be used from under the SLR, the Bren was gravity fed so to say. Funny though, the old AK 47- [7.62 39 round mag's is used by many others today. AK-47, then came the AKM (modernized), then AK-74 (5.45 mm version), then the AK-100 series All our previous weapons were easy to clean and look after.

The SA80 has had a bad rap over the years.... the first time i came across it was back in 1986 at a recruitment day at my secondary school in Fleet Hampshire the second time i came across it was in 1991 when i joined up.... love or hate it it has its place and as a bullpup it is a nice fire system to carry of which 95% of its life was undertaken but and that is a big BUT its was very unreliable hence breaking down the cleaning kit into what i like to call pods of which i have 2 rods, brushes and leaky oil bottle kept in pod 1 tool kept in which ever was easy access in the field pod 2.... i have put it simple for the non service of you out there But saying the above i loved the SA80 as it was really my first weapon system and that is why i use only Bullpups now in .22 and .177 just feels rite on the range....

Interesting video Keith. A mate of mine used the NATO version of the Bren Gun in the NZ Army back in the 70's. The Australian Army replaced the Bren gun with the American M60 in the early 60's. But the Bren NATO version was introduced to some units in the late 60's and in service till the late 70's. I first seen a picture of the Minimi (called the F89 LSW in the Australian Army) in Andy McNab's Bravo Two Zero book. And I loved it. So when I enlisted it was my weapon of choice. I qualified on it at in basic training. And always volunteered to be section gunner so I could use it. Everyone gave me shit for wanting to carry it all the time with extra ammo and spare barrel. But there was method in my madness. By carrying the Minimi I didn't have to carry the radio. HA HA As always Keith keep the great videos coming.

In the late 80s we were unit by unit having SLR replaced by Austeyr and L1A2 ( if about) and Brens replaced by minimi. We kept the Bren about into the 90s. A matter of replacing as they came off the production line. Huge mistake to dump 7.62. As afgahnistan proved. As most said at the time wrong decision if we ever have to fight on home soil. Small numbers greater range a 7.62 is what you want in Australia. As you lot had with the SA80, we had lots of issues on the first runs of aus. Ive seen one empty 22 rounds on a range att load action. Brrrrrrrrtt. Full auto safety was on and i was watching no finger on the trigger. Minimis just would miss a 1x1m target at 200 went everywhere. NZ bought some we made and sent them back😅

On Pre Bosnia training in Sennalager we have the pleasure of having a go with the Gimpy. I absolutely loved it. Wasn't sure about the clearing procedure, as the swiping the hand over the plate where the belt went just didn't feel right. I only got to clean the LSW, but never used it. The one rifle I would have loved to fire was the SLR. AS it would probably have fitted me better than the SA80, that would smack me in the check every now and then as it was to short for me. Long neck. Didn't have that problem with the Susat sight, only the Iron sight.

Only rifle ever built without a MAJOR flaw was the .303 shame it was not an auto version… the SLR and SA80 equivalent Flasher was a nightmare. I swear the mini me was too short for accuracy due to the barrel size and burst rate on Auto it would buzz around on the pops. Saying all that , I had used the Sa80 on Single Shot with a conversion in the Aldershot tunnels with a .22 conversion kit single shot. No problems. Love your Content Mukka.

How organise squads and platoons when it comes to support weapons is a long term question and debate. It depends both on the available guns, and on the tactical doctrine, and it tends to go in circle in a rougly 50 years period or so. Keep tabbing, and a D-day tab would be nice!😀

XMG ‘77 - 1 WFR and QLRs used GPMG for the cuds but LMG around town. And what about the Browning .30 with its cloth belts Keith! We had those on the Ferrets and Saricans. The Saricans in XMG had a short section of black plastic water pipe with a rubber smoke discharger cap over the end to protect the Brownings from the lovely Irish weather. When you opened fire the whole tube flew off the end of the gun like a missile! Years later ‘someone’ told me that when those improvised pipes first appeared it was believed that they actually were a 40mm rocket! 🤣🤣🤣 IIRC we suffered a lot of stoppages with the .30 down to those cloth belts.

Outstanding film but read the book - you'll never put it down, personally having read it probably about three times now... Another one whilst we're on the subject - 'A Bridge too Far'... The film is an excellent depiction of the tragedy that happened there in Arnhem, but read the book if you ever get a chance Keith, you won't regret it... Looking forward to your next vid... Let's tab! 👍👉

On the Chiftain tank, if we had to bail out, the gunner took the cupola GPMG, the driver had the tripod, and butt in his compartment and brought it with him to convert it to a dismounted role.

It's funny looking back I can't really say I enjoyed firing the weapons on the ranges in the light role but did in the armoured role from the vehicles. Range days were always a pain in the arse I thought you always seemed to be under pressure to get good results so you didn't enjoy it. When I was a gunner signaller in the Scots guards reconassaince platoon range days were much more fun, you had the main armament the 30 mm rardon cannon and a turret fixed gpmg. We once had a fun shoot on the ranges in Germany where they flew model airplanes up and down the range. Eight vehicles on the firing point each had a go, no one hit one then two call signs four call signs, eventually all eight of us let rip all at once and dropped it. It's unbelievably hard to hit a moving aircraft from a fixed point on the ground so hats off to the lads in the Falklands for dropping a Pukara.😊

I was the smallest lad in my section so guess who humped the GPMG, but i loved it, i was a great shot sith it when needed just using irons, its an amazing sight when you got a full section of GPMGs in SF roll at night with the tracers pouring in on a distant hilltop. Quick edit., but then you had to clean her and she can be a dirty girl, lot as dirty as a gas operated system but dirty all the same lol

I'm a civvy but I heard that some modern body armour can defeat 5.56 so there is a rumour of an intermediate cartridge in USA between 5.56 and 7.62. First ww vickers water cooled mg defensive only due to weight. Sure I heard that ir operated all day with no stoppages. Fairly low rate of fire but absolutely reliable. Good channell keep it up.

I think when the vickers were replaced, they had all that spare ammo, they set up an experiment to see how long it could run without a stoppage, apparently they put millions of rounds through it.

GPMG, certainly wasn't light, if i remember right it weighed around 36 Pound, add on all the other kit, was hell to carry. I'm only 5' 7" carrying that baby plus kit wasn't much fun, especially when a sprog. Don't get me onto the 84mm, plus SLR, now we are talking. Carried that mfer around, got to the firing point, told to give it to him over there, was gutted. Never actually fired it, but at the time i was gutted. Was hell being a sprog until the next draft came in, then they got the privilege of them weapons. 😮😮😮

I did my skill at arms in the Army cadets with a No4 and the .303 Bren in the 80s ,loved it ,yet the air cadets were allowed to play with the SLR ,and GPMG and Strling SMG ,only because the armors lad was in the air cadets, we was well pi$$Ed, we used to shoot the single shot .22lr bolt action, first firearm I bought when I got my FAC was a No4 Mk 2 ,I have no live rounds or empty cases in my procession, sir ,never once had .22lr stuffed in my puttes lol loved doing my skill at arms ,then later in life I has a FAC and a AR15 ,AK47,.303 and lots of other rifles ,like in the film Tumbledown , 7.62 when a body is hit, a body drops ,think the British should have adopted the AR15 and not the SA80

In Canada (BATUS) Alberta 1979 we had to train Section Attacks with figure 11 targets and with Chieftains up front live firing, it started getting boring. So I and my No 2 on the gun (GPMG) decided to fire 3-5 bursts at the Chieftains rear (Turret area) DUNK! DUNK! DUNK! Of course this was very stupid but we had a great laugh! I didn´t know the "Tankies" stashed all their beer in the outer containers, and without knowing we "Shot up" I don´t know how many pallets of beer....... (As I said, it was a stupid idea)

Some of my guesses why a workhorse piece of equipment is back in rotation, Utility/better suited for whatever conflict the people that know abit too much are speculating on, Cost-cheaping out ( vast stockpiles of readily available weapons instead of spending more on new equipment ). If your willing to put some tinfoil on however More depressing thought related to above, Mass rollout of older mothballed ish equipment to get personel familiar with it because they're giving away good equipment to people who arent properly trained to wield a bananna skin. Perhaps thats unlikely but start sweating if it starts happening to other pieces of hardware long consigned to the dustbin. A more positive option but also the most conspiratorial because it would imply they actualy care somewhat.. gap filling between what you have now and new weapon systems that have modern cutting edge tech in them with ww2 and above level calibres capeable of defeating modern body armour w very minimal recoil in various stances+ other features
