Those wafers of oil in the sump are paraffin wax, a by product of early oils, particularly from pennsylvania oil. A common problem with 50's oils.

The onan ball and cup governor assy in the camshaft drive gear, must be smooth almost to a Polish to ensure it moves the yoke on the shaft with very little friction,so that the governor arm can respond to that last few Hz , required for a minimum of 59 Hz, at full load, check for sludge or make sure yoke and shaft are clean. With very little friction, also the wrong governor spring can put you outside the adjustment limits of the adjustment linkage. This engine seems to have plenty of power and once working correctly should pull close to 3 kw. These were over built and often under rated, once frequency and voltage come into spec it will be a wonderful example of. The quality onan was once capable of . this channel is fantastic !!!!, I was a final inspector at onan. For many years, can't wait for the next video.

I really like your style of videos. You make us viewers feel like we are right there with you. I have actually ran across that exact type of sludge before. I am in my late 60's and can remember it well. Way back when; a lot of companies used a type of paraffin in their formula of motor oil. One of the major Pennsylvania companies would use very copious amounts of it. Don't want to call names but it starts with the letter "Q". I suppose it was alright as long as you changed it frequently. But, if you neglected to do so; multiple layers of waxy wafers in the pan such as you found. Being that it was on a farm doing light duty, I almost guarantee that is the brand that was in there. And; God knows for how long. Actually, I hadn't thought about that for many years. Pretty dang cool! Looking forward to Part 2.

I was wondering when you were going to put out a new video Mike. Glad to see you putting out some new content. I couldn't help notice the Sheldon Vernon shaper in the background that you picked up at Tuckahoe. Would love to see some videos of you working on that. And by the way, our big show this year is July 8th through July 11th. I hope you and roadking can make it down for the show. If you do make sure to stop by the shop and see me.

I saw on one of the labels where they recommended PA oil. Quaker State used to put paraffin in their oil. When I pulled the heads off of my 72 Toyota Celica, the camshaft was covered in this sludge. I changed oils right then.

Looks like the vintage Quaker State 'Motor Oil' I found in the pan of a Ford van I purchased back in '87. The internals of the block looked nearly identical and being a straight 6 it drove me to work for many years after I cleaned up the mess.

If you haven't seen big wafers of sludge in an oil pan, you ain't been around very much. I had a 62 Ford Galaxie 500 when I was in the Army. It had a valve rocker noise so I removed one of the valve covers and voila...it was full of the same stuff you got there. I tweezered out as much as I could, changed the oil, ran it a few times and repeated. I drove that thing all over creation without a problem until I finally traded it in on a VW Beetle.

Parifin based oil caused that .. garbage oil like penzoil/ quaker state. petroleum base oils best. DELO TEXACO VALVOLINE BEST FOR ENGINE WE USE. DELO 30 wt in our old 1950 onan genset., and a little marvel mystery oil added to fuel to help lube valves and upper cylinder (s) This genset probably had long service intervals also. This is why best to clean and flush before starting old engine.. smart move great video thanks 😊

You cracked me up @4:36. Done that a few times myself! That's a sweet gen set. That old paraffin based oil can sure sludge up an oil pan. I have even seen the gray hue from lead residue from the old leaded gas days. Is there any provision on the cam follower fasteners for lock wire or fold over locks? Looks like there is a potential for those to come loose.

It looks as though it sat in a 'museum'. Onan Fridley plant used to have a row of 'historical' gensets in one office aisle, perhaps that was one, I don't remember that one in particular. WW2 'portable' genset was there. Cummins couldn't care less about anything Onan historically, so they may have sold them off.
