Lets make a TOOL Machinist Hammer

In this episode of Lets make a TOOL I will attempt to make a machinist hammer to use around the workshop. I have seen many different designs of hammers online and thought it was about time I contributed to the every growing list.

Great video joe as usual mate I made one a few weeks ago and for the life of me I could not figure out how to connect the handle to head without it showing now I know lol so I’ll be making another soon the beenie turned up this morning mate fits well and comfortable and keeps the old bald head warm lol thanks again mate all the best god bless everyone

Nicely done project. Would have loved to see the whole project without so many sections of the video cut out. Even if they are repeats or simple processes, let us see them.

Off center, Ha Ha, I know how it happened, done it myself... Its a feature, and as you are using it, you might even find out you prefer it that way :-) You might even want to upgrade it later by putting a copper face on the bottom end of the handle, perhaps the easiest way of getting your own copper is to melt some scrap pipe you might find. copper is very soft, well, until you have bumped it a time or two, good for gentle thumps with a surprising amount of weight behind it.(Just to clarify on the copper end, you would be holding the proper handle portion, but like you would a pen,)

Yeah after watching the video back pretty sure I know how it’s happened. Good idea with the copper I might make an assortment of ends.

Really like the end product, I was wondering what you were machining when you posted earlier in the week. I am curious if you can push your lathe a bit further in this softer steel. I'm getting 1mm DOC in similar stuff, though I was only able to achieve that after a bearing swap. Cheers

Hi dude yeah I think you are right I probably can achieve a deeper cut. I find with these lathes the cuts vary from day to day. One day a cut will break chips lovely and give a great finish then the same cut the next day complete opposite. I Also enjoyed your fly cutter video today great little tool.

Brass is much denser than aluminum. Making their heads offset like that balances the entire hammer properly. Yeah.

Great project indeed! You could’ve done the entire project on the lathe if you had a 4-jaw chuck. Where can I get my hands on a radius tool cutter and holder for metal? I have found plenty made for wood.

Hello Joe, I enjoyed this project very much and it turned out nicely. When the head has an offset like that, I think they call it a "dog head" and I think it is for certain clearance needs. You didn't show the knurling, but I would suggest making one of those scissor knurls, they make life so much easier for the lathe, and you will never look back at knurling the same. I think the type I use is the scissor clamp type I head it large best for these mini lathes. Glad you enjoyed the video, all the best have a good week
