I have no idea what their backstory was. Maybe he was a jerk. Maybe he did her really wrong. But whatever it is (unless it has to do with domestic violence), there is just no reason to treat another human beings personal stuff like that. I am not talking about the deck alone. @Bryan Black I have two alpha decks with lotuses and moxen that are almost hourglass shaped. I used to keep them rubber banded and in my back pocket. my friend and I would whip them out to play wherever we could - on the sidewalk waiting for the bus, at lunch, you name it. If we found a flat surface, we played. I still have the decks, still rubber banded.

Nowhere did he say he paid $20,000 for it. That's just the overblown estimated value of a sealed Alpha deck. Since it was already opened, and he knew the cards that were in it, he was actually buying a lot of 60 Alpha cards (plus the box). I'm guessing he paid maybe $5000 for it.

My buddy a long time ago, had a book of MTG cards from Alpha up, and his deck was a control deck where he tapped all your stuff every turn! Anyways he moved in with me and eventually fell behind over 6 months in rent and bills, and so I threatened to kick him out if he didn't pay me by the end of the month. So he asked me what he should do to pay me and I told him to sell some of his cards... So we went to Gateway Games to sell some of his cards and the guy working was 8 years old again coming down on X-Mas morning...lol He flipped through the first 2 pages and said how many do you want to sell,? to which my friend says I'm not sure at least 800 dollars worth, and the guy pulled out 5 cards and said this is $800 right here! So realizing he could keep 98% of his cards he was like ok so what about the rest of them!? So the guy says give him about an hour and I'll let you know! About 75 mins later he called us over and said I'll give you 27 thousand dollars for the entire book! So my friend who was already under the impression that the cards were worth a lot of money was a little hesitant, but decided to sell the entire book! After about a week he came down stairs flipping out on me and showed me the price of the cards he sold which included 4 Volcanic Island(beta) 4 of every Alpha Mox cards, 6 beta Black Lotus, and 4 Time Walks and 4 TimeTwisters, and those are just like 3 pages in his 20 page book! Now mind you that some of those cards were played long before sleeves were a thing, but I heard that the owner of the store retired not long after the sale of that book! Sold the place to a new guy and is still open!

I personally think the original dude was very curious and opened the alpha starter pack to cbeck for black lotus and the mox or any power 9 cards or those that are the most valuables out there and then sit around for a while for a collector like Rudy to come around and resell at scealed pack price with a very sad story to a person that seem like a good guy because in fact he's a stranger online and i can't really tell for sure. But in sure he kept good care of it for a long time and opportunity was there to still sell for big bucks. Because Rudy could have asked for complete list of the cards before purchasing it, so he still completely bought it blind like sceal was on. Wow. They were still very nice cards.
