Regarding compression ratio (CR)...a lower CR effectively reduces the peak temperature in the combustion chamber. Assuming the same peak pressure/air density is required, by letting the turbo do more of the compression work, the in-cylinder temperature will be less since it wasn't compressed as much by the piston. Regardless of CR and boost, the air intake temperature will be the same so by compressing it more inside the cylinder you're increasing the peak temperature. Initial air density doesn't affect the peak temperature, it only affects peak pressure/density.

The other big benefit of direct injection is the DME is not limited to injecting WHILE the intake valve is open. DI you can inject fuel whenever you want (see DPF regen), so you can inject way more fuel and still be efficient whereas 2000cc injectors to make similar power isn't the easiest on the engine.

I read an old tech manual on the m52 engines that explained the rationale behind the low cylinder head temp + high block temp configuration. Apparently the lower cylinder head temp means cooler intake mixture.This colder intake mixture has more molecules per part ,which equals more volumetric efficiency. The high block temperature 🌡 results in reduced moving part friction

Thanks! I didn't as I got used to the assisted riving on my M340i and really didn't want to give that up. I have a manual N54 335i that I drive when I feel itch to drive manual. I converted it from auto to manual. I've also heard that the manual in the G80 is decent but nothing too special as it was carry over from the F30 340i as a way to offer a manual for the small percentage of people that still want it.

Awesome and super interesting video! Do you think doing a stage 1 with tune and downpipes (or just tune), etc would shorten the lifespan of the engine? Also is there any specific new maintenance that would need to be done? Judging by the video - I think it wouldnt hurt the lifespan, but wanted to ask the expert.

The intake resonator is not a muffler to reduce noise but a resonator tuned to produce standing waves to aid induction pulses. Common practice for last 30 years, especially Japanese higher performance models. "Lose fuel to evaporation" on port injected engines? not really as any "evaporated" fuel is still part of the intake mixture. Not clear what you mean there. My understanding from the BMW S58 introduction video is that the S58 abandoned the stratified cooling scheme of the B58. Pistons, rods and crankshaft are all forged in the S58. Only crankshaft is forged on N54 and some later M2 N55, according to BMW. A national tuner had an early N55 crankshaft out next to an N54 crankshaft and could not visually tell there was any material difference. So .... who knows? Porsches 992 911 run about 9.5:1 geometric compression ratios on their Turbo and Turbo S engines. You know of course that Mahle makes a forged 9.5:1 piston for the N54? Just saying ......

Great video. Have to admit I'm Jelly in the legs over such a beautiful blacked out M-Car, considering I'm some D-Bag Audi/VW guy. Still miss my E46 M3.....You mentioned the S58 compression ratio being lower, and higher turbo charge pressure than the B58 engines, though an important aspect of "Direct Injection" engines you're missing is that DI Technology offers the ability to run a piston engine in "Fuel Stratified" or "Fuel Homogenized" modes. Basically, stratified means we run ultra lean squirting in fuel just before ignition on compression. Running a homogenized ratio (1.0 lambda or 14.7/1 AF) means squirting fuel during the air intake cycle, like a port injected engine. If I had to guess, I'd say the S58 compression is lower because the fuel injection is mostly/entirely homogenous based because it allows for a higher fuel/air density, which results/produces a higher expansion ratio, similar to a Diesel engine......

Yeah my G20 had carpeted liner to help with that. The G8X come with very wide and sticky tires that pickup a lot of rocks also.

Have you seen glare free high beam? It's disabled in the US but I think you can enable it with esys. So with the kafas camera the beam will spread out and make a tunnel for the car in front or shut off a light if a car is passing

I have a question. I thought there were 10 different settings for their slip differential. Meaning I thought you could set it where the tires would spin out just like the F80 or put the setting on the other end of the spectrum and the tires with catch and not spin at all. Am I wrong?

The compression ratio doesn't make a huge difference in power, and paired with direct injection it's mostly for efficiency and emissions. For example, Papadakis Racing went back to port injection with their Supra build. Though they probably use e85 and that cools the intake air even more.

@@VehicularDIY They have custom pistons but didn't mention compression ratio in the 4 videos about the supra build, they did a live build at sema, but it's almost 6 hours to watch, they might have mentioned it there. Usually, engine with high boost have a lower compression ratio and na engines can go up to 12:1 with pump gas, even with port injection. S85 S65

Lot's of cheap, fragile, plastic, especially in the engine compartment. After it gets a few years old and has been exposed to high temperatures from the exhaust manifold, don't look at it the wrong way. lt's likely to break.
