“If you take the computer away from a digital artist, they can still draw, but if you take the AI generator away, you’ve lost your method of expressing your ideas.” You honestly hit the nail in the head right there. Also, hope you’ve had a happy birthday.
@Tonatsi Жыл бұрын
(I want to preface this by stating I am not picking a side because both have good arguments going for them) A lot of people consider things like programming an art, but if you took the computer away from me, sure I could still 'code' by writing on paper, but most developers will tell you that that is so inefficient that no one considers it viable even for just expressing your ideas. I think that 'the necessary skills are transferable to another medium' is a rather poor qualifier of what makes talent and skill, given that it functionally exclused any expertise in any advanced tool that exists. It's like taking away a gun, noting that they can't use a bow, and saying it's because all of the skill was in the Gun and not the person using it. My opinion is that, *_as an artform_* AI is fundamentally different. Neither *should* replace the other, and there is great potential in people who put the proper amount of effort into AI art, but the fact that you can obtain an economically viable low-effort result through AI much more efficiently than by drawing it digitally is confusing the debate between 'art' and 'economic value'.
@No-longer1 Жыл бұрын
@@Tonatsi I feel like a fairer comparasion would be to compare it to switching between program languages- only the tools change afterall. And even if following your example, chances are if you are a programmer without a computer you will still understand complex mathematical calculations that is appliable elsewhere. With AI art all you need to know is how to put text into a box, and your knowledge will remain just that

@Tonatsi Жыл бұрын
@@No-longer1 I would argue that, if you say that as a programmer, I switch between languages, then I would say that the equivalent would be switching between different AI models, rather than switching from AI to canvas. Ultimately, while I can 100% agree that there is no creativity on the aspect of turning prompts into artwork, as the AI does that itself, I think it's reductive to assume that there can't be any creativity in the wrangling of the text prompts and the parameters to get the AI to show you what you want. Much like how you can draw a few straight or wiggly lines on paper quickly and get *something,* you can throw a few words into an AI and get *something*. But unless someone else has done the work for you already and has developped a pre-calibrated environment that manages to reduce the workload on a specific genre (and even then it's never perfect), you'll find it's near impossible to get something satisfyingly high quality if you're really looking for it out of AI. I see skill (And subsequently a possible art form) in the process of tweaking parameters and prompts in order to force the AI to close in on your idea. I understand that the majority of people using AI art do not use it skillfully, but my sticking point hinges on the fact that so many artists feel economically threatened (and honestly, rightfully so) by AI that they have decided to demonize it, and refuse all good aspects that it *does* have. And the specific reason I take issue with this approach is thaat *_even if there are more negatives than positives of AI generation right now,_* demonising it will just make the AI companies continue developing it as-is, as they are getting no support from the demonising parties, and thus they feel their words are not constructive. Instead, if proper focus is put on the *good* parts of AI *while* pointing out the downsides, you're instead providing supportive criticism, which the industry is marginally more likely to listen to as it represents an accepting and open market to exploit, if only they tailored their products to it more.

An example of my use of AI is that I'm working on a world building project, and we have a lot of different scenes. Simply put, I use AI to rapidly generate concept art to try and lock-in an aesthetic visually so that when I next come back to it, I can quickly recover my aesthetic and remain consistent. I intend to commission a proper artist once/if the project is complete.

I think 'Genuine Effort' can kinda be seen as a currency of sorts. Like... The sandwich your mom made you for school lunch was made with that genuine effort and care. Or your example: The artwork someone gifted to their partner is special mostly because of the genuine effort it now holds and represents. Of course it's not perfect. But it simply doesn't need to be because it has no effect on the care and thought behind it. Also I don't think anyone's perception of any media can be "wrong". If you listen to a techno track and you're suddenly inspired to draw something then that is simply what you've made of it. Idk bad example but you get my point.

I think the problem with AI art is that it can't really be made by an actual artist. I tried using various AI generators for some time and the problem is that you don't really have input into what is created. Like sure you can say "anime girl with x description sitting in y environment from z perspective", but the more tags or description you give to AI generator, the worse it gets at following your instructions This would not be the problem for any actual artists because the better description you can give them, the better they could replicate what you imagined, but AI generator doesn't really know how to draw. Human artist might have their fundamentals figured out, but AI generator just has an (admittedly) large number of poses it can replicate and limited ability to infer between them. Art comes from your input about the details and specifics, not from a general description, which is why 2 artists can draw the same idea and it would feel different, but most AI images feel kinda the same

It doesn't go through the creative process (more of a struggle) to turn that creative vision into a reality that perfectly reflects the emotions and the details that the artists or commissioner feels. It doesnt erase and redo the mistakes and the imperfections over and over untill its perfect and close to the vision as possible. You summed up my thoughts not just on AI art, but art as a whole. I had that “he’s just like me” moment with Changes, but maybe not in the way you were expecting. You expressed your frustration and conflict with your relationship with Chip, and I kind of felt what you felt in terms of how I look at my fursona, but opposite. For years I’ve wanted my character to be the face of what I do, but I never had the courage to fully commit to it until now, and I’m starting to make that shift online. I want to express myself through him and make songs with lyrics written from his perspective. Granted, he is just me so it’s not like they’ll be much different then if they were about my real, human self, but portraying my feelings through music sung by (in theory) a fluffy, orange cat guy has always been something I wanted. I too listen to music and imagine animations in my head, though my dysgraphia makes it hard to turn those into reality. But I too long for pure, unfiltered artistic expression both from myself and the people who’s content I consume. As a fan for (if I had to guess) five or six years now, your video gave me confidence to finally strive for what I’ve always wanted in this regard, and I want to thank you for that.

Came here for a more in-depth discussion over creative freedom and the shortcuts AI art takes- Stayed for the Danny DeVito pillow off-frame. lol I think you hit the topic right on the nose, and almost more than accurately described how I've felt since I graduated highschool. I don't find any of the things I enjoyed- enjoyable anymore. How can I when I have work the day after. I don't have time to work all day on a single piece- jumping through different art programs- just to make something an AI could make within a couple seconds. But I still do. Despite it obviously taking longer than a day now that I have a full-time job. My first piece this year was just finished a week ago. And it took almost four months when it should have taken less than a couple days. Yet after all that time, I still feel like I accomplished something. The only thing that has dramatically changed with how I draw- outside of my style, format, and devices used for each piece- is my audience. I draw for me more than I did a couple years ago. I look back on my recent pieces and still feel like they were worth the time, despite not having as many as I did the last couple years. Getting away from social media has definitely helped, but I digress- If anyone is doom-scrolling through these comments here is one thing you should take away from this one- and any others saying the same thing- Create for yourself. Obviously sharing your creation with those outside your circle is a good thing- but don't make it the main focal point. You worked on it; You took time out of your finite experience to express yourself; You should be proud of it; And you should hold onto that feeling because no one else will understand it like you have. How I just now described my creative process of my most recent piece *barely* takes into account all the nuances and movements that got me to it's completion i.e. what I would consider as 'a relief of completion'. And that's what I'll now do with this comment. Complete it.

Your address of AI art is really good, and made me realize the differences between AI art and avant grade gallery art. I’ve heard people compare AI art to Dadaism and found object art because, at the end of the day, the artist didn’t “make” the thing, but they did generate the idea. The big difference though is that Dadaism and conceptual art eschew aesthetics for a greater meaning, often commentary on art or the world at large. Obviously, Duchamp’s Fountain comes to mind here, but that’s a commentary on gallery art and what art means. Untitled (Portrait of Ross in L.A.) is another great example you brought up. It’s a work with really deep meaning and specifically exists for reasons other than aesthetics. AI art, then, is similar in the sense that the artist had little say in the piece as a whole’s construction and… taste… but differs in WHY it exist and what it communicates, which to me, is the most important thing about an artwork Really really good take on the whole AI art thing

i really like this take on AI art tbh. i am admittedly not an artist in the pen and paper sense, but that doesn’t mean i’m not creative. i’m a woodworker and amateur musician and the whole not putting any thought into *why* something is made drives me up the wall sometimes. like obviously the aesthetic qualities of something are extremely important. i wouldn’t make and sell the things i do if i wasn’t proud of them and thought they looked good, but the whole “aesthetics only” attitude is why i end up with people coming to my booth saying “i could do that for (x price).” and i know this isn’t just an issue that creatives face. it’s like walking up to a mathematician with a calculator and saying “why do you do what you do.” it completely removes all of the intricacies behind the work people do. a mathematician does their work to better understand the world around them. not to just solve a simple problem. artists are the same in this regard (at least from my experience.) i do art because i’m trying to explore and explain my world in a way that words and conversations just can’t sometimes. i think removing that human aspect from art takes away an extremely valuable universal language that humanity has managed to develop, and i think it prevents or at least discourages people from exploring and communicating through that language.

AI art truly feels like it's missing the point for me. It makes me sad that it's going to kill so much of the art world and discourage so many people from becoming professional artists. Machines can't make art. They can make nice-looking images, or be a tool to come up with new ideas. But in order to be art, it requires a human component. What really gets me is that the reason artists feel threatened by machines being able to create images on par with theirs is the commodification of EVERYTHING. Constantly, we are driven by the society we live in to monetize every single second of our lives. Frankly I find that repulsive. We shouldn't be mad at the machines that are replacing us, we should be getting mad at the people in charge. I just found out how fun painting is. I'm going to get better at it. I have no worries that machines can already create images better looking than anything I will ever paint, because I'm not trying to monetize it. We could all live lives happy and doing almost no work, and society would still move forward. Yet we have to put in our 8 hours, just so big line go up. We don't benefit from the victories, and have to constantly eat the failures.

Why does looking at the universe invoke a feeling of awe like looking at a picture? Because it isn't inherent to human. Art is a reflection of reality. Both what ifs and what ares.

I know that I'm late and i typically don't say this in comments very often, but this means a lot to me. It gives me a new perspective and motivates me to keep going. Changes are apart of life, but there is some stuff that you should just accept, like you said. I also agree SO heavily on the AI art portion though. You have been an inspiration of mine for a while. Thank you.

Taking the computer away from a digital artist is closer to swapping a pencil artist's pencil set for a paintbrush and a pot of ink. They underlying skills they use for the expression are still there, but all of the muscle memory and motor execution skills to put their knowledge to work will have to be rebuilt on a new foundation. Taking the text-2-image generator away from someone who has only ever made images using their prose writing and giving them a pencil instead is close to taking away a guitarist's guitar and giving them a trombone. They still know what music sounds like. If they learned to read notation, they will still have that skill. They still know how to make _music_. But they don't know how to use this particular instrument and would have to learn a lot of new fundamentals of that instrument before they're back to using their underlying fundamental skills. - I've been drawing for almost 20 years as an on-and-off-again hobby. I can use ML generated images either as references when non exist. I can use ML images to conceptualize what a 3D render of my own characters might look like so that I can pass it to somebody else who knows how to actually make better 3d models than I can. Or when I'm bored or sick, I can just general quick doodles to enjoy for a little while when I don't feel the energy or desire to make it all myself. In a way, curation is an art to itself. People who are deep into fashion are very acquainted with that concept in a way that people who are more primed for illustration tend not to be. There are people who make spiritual arguments about what it means to create something, and people who argue that something has to be done entirely by the creator itself for it to be "real" and so on. But so many different artists have vastly different opinions on what art is and why it should be done that after hearing enough bad-faith arguments, it becomes harder and harder to take people at their word as their own opinions about creativity. And I'm not sure what to do about it than just keep trying to take people at their word and discuss it when they're open to do so. “If you take the computer away from a digital artist, they can still draw, but if you take the AI generator away, you’ve lost your method of expressing your ideas.” So no, I fundamentally don't agree with that. A person who has put a lot of time into learning to write good descriptive prompts will probably still be able to draw well enough with their words to commission artists they might like. The mental image they have in their mind is something they still have to form.

13:00 It's a "gotcha" moment because those folks believe that value is Purely Inherent to a piece, and think caring about origins is for... "undesirables" let's say, this might not be the place to use the kind of language that really reflects how those types see other people. They want to destroy museum plaques and punish those who make them. They don't want people to matter. Whatsoever.
@Buglin_Burger7878 Жыл бұрын
It is a gotcha because you don't value the art itself, you value the person who made it. In other words it is no different then buying tickets to a movie because famous actor X is in it not that the movie itself is good or bad. You care not for the piece but the fact a specific person is there. It is why a lot of Patreon scams work asking for 5$ a month to see content early or unique content and they rarely upload. Only the crazy ones wish to destroy plaques, punish others, ect. To them people don't matter, because art is beauty and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Art is not one sided, it is subjective.
@Bubble-Foam8 ай бұрын
@@Buglin_Burger7878 Art isn’t exclusively about aesthetics though. That’s a massive misunderstanding. It seems like what you value is “things that look pretty”. Or in other words, content to consume. Which is pretty big trend I’ve noticed with a lot of ai obsessed people. They’ll sit there and spend hours at a time perfecting their little prompts to get exactly what they want, or they’ll feed all sorts of weird and bizarre combinations of words just to see what it gives them. It’s like tik tok in a way, an endless stream of randomly assembled content you don’t have to work for, but these people are usually the type to make fun of content bingers.

I honestly see where you're coming from with your interpretations and I can agree with them. I really don't think AI art will fully replace art by real beings with personal experiences, even with it's imperfections, when the art community has so many people who understand the human art process in the first place. I really hope you enjoyed your birthday, and I appreciate hearing your perspective!

You really nail it on the part about AI art. Even if there wasn't the issue of art theft and all that rubbish, AI art makes art that is a product, and that goes against what I understand what art really is: a means of communication. Art is the artist putting to paper (or whatever medium they choose) their perception of reality for the world to see. I was so happy you brought up the Portrait of Ross, because that was the exact piece my art history teacher used to express contemporary art to us, and it stuck with me! I feel most of the people who value art merely for its beauty (whether or not it "looks good") are the same people who don't understand art (aka, aren't artists themselves or don't interpret art in a meaningful way) and who would see a minimalist piece and say "I could draw that" or "it looks like a five year old drew that". Because they don't know or understand the time and effort the piece required to make, so it's "easy" for them to judge. While fellow artists or art appreciators see and understand the work gone into the piece. In a similar vein of the artist who used AI to generate a picture for his wife, I agree that him drawing the image himself would've been more meaningful and appreciated than a "perfect" AI-generated piece. I participate in Art Fight since 2020, and while I don't receive tons of drawings, I appreciate the heck outta them (even when some of them were rushed) because I know that these people still took the time to draw my characters and that means a lot.

Don’t know if you’ll ever read this, but you explaining that you imagine some people create AMVs in their head while listening to music was one of the most relatable things I’ve ever heard someone say. I always animate visuals in my head when listening to music, either with my own or the art styles and casts of specific shows in mind. I just don’t visualize it with live action, and hearing you say it made me so happy to know that you understand it in a way. I’ve made 2 AMVs and the satisfaction I got from finishing them was otherworldly because it’s the closest I can get to depicting that. I wish you the very best! Keep exploring what you feel comfortable exploring, and create what you want to create!

Okay, so here's my thoughts on why I think some people hate AI art. It's because people say that it's a program that creates art based on real people's art that they made and it's very low effort and a cheap way to sell and mass produce it (looking at you, DeviantArt...). But with your idea that it's another way for others to express their ideas or don't have the time or skills required to illustrate them, it's a great way of looking at it. Honestly, the way some look at it is that people value real people's art to call it "real art" is mind boggling to me. Like, dude, art is art, and it's an expression of ideas and passion, regardless of the medium used to make it. Great video Chip, loved this to bits, keep up the good work.

16:53 this kinda rephrases why I hate the rapid spread of machine learning models for image generation. Art is something we do to be creative, and instead of using our newfound power of highly skilled machine learning to do menial tasks & give us more time for creative works, we’re using the MLMs to generate the creative works, while still doing the menial stuff ourselves.
@Buglin_Burger7878 Жыл бұрын
Because most menial tasks require an lot of movement, stuff like grocery stores for example are so complex that while we could use an AI to make a giant vending machine it would be inefficient as opposed to customers walking in and manual stocking and having people at checkouts to verify identities. Stuff current AI could replace is stuff that could have been replaced for 20+ years already. Art on the other hand is much more in line as it exists within this small drive you could plug into an AI and get a output put back into the same drive in 5 minutes. Just like taxes. Look at your icon, it is a bunch of pixels told to display in a set way which looks like H and 13. Literally all the AI has to do is that when you tell it to. As an artist, you outline stuff and create basic shapes and expand from there. All stuff you can tell an AI to do with ease. Get an AI to go stock shelves though and you run into a huge mess.

I go by the rule that things will turn out better based on how much effort was put into them. There are a lot of time-saving techniques you can use for animation, but traditional animation can look so much more fluent and lively than modern animation all because everything was done by hand
