Don't know why most people talking about the rog ally just seem to ignore or be unaware of the SD card issues that still happen to this day. It's like it's a taboo topic or something despite logically speaking it should be talked about so potential future buyers know what to expect, even more so at the asking price for one. Maybe that just me

Right now I could go buy a rog ally z1 extreme for 120 less than the steam deck oled and I'm still getting the steam deck because the rog seems to have to much compromise for power, battery life sucks, SD card melts, rog ally 2 is releasing this year, the list goes on. Just to many reasons to not buy it currently, the device is a beast in terms of power but I want something abit more reliable, user friendly and polished

No these are very good points. I haven't personally had any real issues with my ROG Ally, but I was nervous about the SD card issues at purchase. ROG Ally is cool but very incomplete

@@numbskullkrewentertainment2163 I have a really nice ROG desktop and as much as i want the power or the rog ally I really don't want windows on a handheld device I just want to turn it on and play with out tweaking many settings, it's a tough decision giving up power for a more user friendly experience and way longer battery life knowing my games will not run as nice, if the rog ally 2 wasn't releasing this year I probably would have chosen the ally over steam deck as I plan on getting the rog ally 2

​@@optimalbonkerzyeah the battery life means it has to be on the charger at all times. I was hoping a battery upgrade would be available but no luck with it so far. The ROG Ally 2 is pretty cool in my opinion. Asus is competing with MSI and Lenovo. While those 3 Duke it out valve can focus on making the Steam deck 2 a more robust platform. Maybe give a new gimmick. But as long as it stays true to core of what the steam deck is all for it.

The steam deck is better because it uses a more optimised os than windows that the ally uses. The ally might be a bit more powerful but the deck is more integrated like having the touchpads for menu navigation or typing with the osk

Track pads are amazing for gaming, not for desktop on the go. They're a lot more precise than joysticks

It was under cooking since 2016 and i was following everything. At that time hype was next to nothing. But after the Chinese handheld boom and switch success. They re-start that project. I remember the early steam Deck they showed in a Japanese or Chinese expo and it was very similar to the steam controller or I say it was just that with a screen but it was over design. When they finally show the steam deck and they say it will be releasing soon? It felt like a dream come true especially the small amount of people like me who were following the deck's creation for 5+ years. The only weird part is that I can't find the early demo presentation of steam Deck videos on KZbin. Maybe steam removed or something.

Each PC handhelds have their ups and downs. The Steam Deck is no exception to that rule. At the end of the day just pick whatever PC handheld, that suits your needs. When it comes to satisfying yourself playing said games. I picked the SD OLED, because I found out. That it’s a great device all around and the price was fair(imo). To me, the OLED is a 1.5 upgrade from the OG SD. Valve really did a good job with it. Whenever future generations of handhelds release a second or more generation of their original product. It’s only going to get better from generation to generation. That’s a “win” for us players. Whenever SD 2.0 actually comes out with more powerful interior hardware. I’m sure more people will purchase it, because it’s an upgrade from the OG and the OLED model. I’m sure people with the OLED will absolutely jump to the 2.0 model. I just hope, they keep their design of the SD in general. If they need tweak the design a bit, to fit bigger interior hardware in it. I’ll be fine with that, but as long as it still has the somewhat same design of the original SD. Then, I’ll still be satisfied 👍

Yeah I was tempted to buy a SD OLED for the review, but decided that it wouldnt add enough to the video. Though I would argue that ROG Ally feels more of a 1.5 upgrade, the OLEDs were a fantastic refresh. And the Lenovo Go is another great hand held in the space. Though it does seem doomed to fail im glad to see more competition in the hand held space.

Nice review, even if it's crazy late to the scene. I still haven't got one of these, but that's because I can't justify buying it since I don't travel much and I had to get something that does drawing well if I was going to get anything. Then, Quest 3 came out and the budget I had for Deck went to that.

I swear, that magnificent piece of technology has been such a Godsend for me.. I've never been the console kind of guy, but eventually I've started thinking about getting a Switch in 2019 due to it's portability, exclusives, and potential to play games with several people without any trouble (as if I ever would've gotten an opportunity for that tho), but there was way too much cons for me to decide on buying it - Having to rebuy games that I already have on Steam, games being almost always $60 and the eShop having much worse sales from what I know, alongside the shitty and limiting specs, relient on there being a port made specifically for Switch by a game studio, very limited customizability, paid online, and few other reasons... But then comes the blessing. Steam Deck gets revealed, oh dear god was it an exciting time for me. A full-on PC with somewhat up-to-date specs that let you play newest games (that are actually worth trying out and aren't terribly optimized)? Alongside shit ton of customizability and tinkering options? Letting you swap the Deck's parts yourself to, for example change the SSD inside it to a better one(letting you get 64GB Deck and a 1TB SSD for the price of 256GB LCD back in the day)? Being able to apply custom shells without having rebuy a completely different device?? More buttons and options of usage to fit everyone??? NO NEED TO REBUY GAMES I ALREADY OWN? *OH FUCK YEAH GIVE ME THAT THING* Been owning the LCD Deck for a while now (like 4 months before the reveal of OLED, forever salty about that) and I'm still loving it, one of my proudest purchases ever. Does it run everything on high at 60+ fps? Nope, life has it's sacrifices, and 30 fps is good enough for a portable PC that powerful at that price and with as many features and community work as it has. Thank fuck I never supported Nintendo financially.

The deck's Console like experience is what makes it stand out so much. The Ally, Legion Go, Claw, all the Ayaneo and GPD devices etc, they all run windows and while thats a boon of compatibility, they suffer in useability. So Microsoft needs a 'Gamescope' of it's own to launch windows in an "xbox" mode focused on running your games and launchers, rather than running 9000 legacy services and etcetera in the background. Something to limit the overhead, and limit the barriers of useability for controller navigation. And if MS thinks they are ready to get out of the console race, they can redirect the XBOX division into developing this. And it can just be an alternative login mode much like game mode and desktop mode is on Steam OS. I love my steam decks, I love my ally. If I had the money for a legion go, Id probably really like that too. And from everything I have heard, I would probably hate the claw, but I love that it exists. And what I love about all of these devices more than anything else, is that as long as we keep supporting them, and amnufacturers take us seriously and make them, and improve them. Game developers will have to seriously start targeting them for at least the minimum spec of their games. And that just means, more people can play, on a wider selection of hardware, or older hardware.

My only issue is lack of EGPU integration and lack of a real performance update with the OLED. Im running a GPD WIN 4 (8840u) with Chimera OS and it works with only a few quirks. And it does work with the GPD G1 but only when using an external monitor and oculink cable. GPD did it better. I had the SD LCD and it always felt it was lacking. Windows is just a pain in the ass on handhelds.

im really hoping the SD2 will have support for EGPU's. if 3rd party EGPU's enclosures where cheap enough, a base model SD2 could be the best of both handhelds and desktops for the price.

@@numbskullkrewentertainment2163 100% agree. I would be fine if they wanted to keep it proprietary as long as they used at least the 7600m xt or even better the 7900m (or future equivalent). One thing that valve does right is that everything just works for the most part. So I am fine with the EGPU coming from them.

Feel like its important to note that the ssd is easily replaceble so you can get the lowest storage and replace the ssd for less than the higher storage deck

It's just a really useful device. And I keep finding excuses to put more dumb childhood nostalgia on it. Diablo 1, PSO, GZDoom, Runescape, Descent, TTCC, the list goes on. I also just discovered "The Powder Toy" on the Discover store, a nice little physics sandbox. I will never get through all these games.

lol but thatss part of the fun. I love playing Doom mods on GZDoom, but at this point i would rather play on mouse and keyboard. But almost any star wars game like force unleashed, fallen order, and jedi acadmey are great to play on it.

It stays close to Steam OS while offering convinience, great improvements and most important a wide range of supported systems, while still having Access to stuff like decky, emudeck etc. The Discord is also super chill and helpful, even Chris Titus Tech said it's one of the best Distros. I'm currently working on a mini console like gaming PC and I will def. Install bazzite on it!

I picked up a 512 GB LCD model steam deck from my local pawn shop the other day, for $300.00 USD. They had a 3 day return policy, so I took it home and did everything I possibly could with it over the weekend. After downloading and playing GTA IV, all the fallouts, GTA V, cyberpunk, city skylines, morrowind, oblivion, and age of empires 2 & 4, I returned it on Monday. Half the games were compatible, constant CTD’s, mouse getting stuck behind DRM pop ups, and having to force close applications.. Hell, it didn’t even have a stand by mode, I had to force close every application after I put it into standby. I was really disappointed. I knew eventually I would get my hands on one, I’ve only heard nothing but good things about it and have a huge library of games on steam (I only downloaded the ones I knew I would play on the go) and at the price for the 512 GB model I couldn’t pass it up. I guess I will wait for the 512 GB OLED model, from what I hear it has better battery life as well.

The steam deck was a disappointment to me. Not having windows or good windows drivers limited it and I haven’t played it much. I regret getting it. Yes I’m aware it’s better now but there’s still no good drivers from valve

@@numbskullkrewentertainment2163a lot of games won’t run on steamos bc of the anti cheat. Having to test versions of proton on steamos to see if you can play a game sucks. Using it this way makes me feel like it was released with unfinished software and it will stay this way. The competition from Lenovo is much better as it is optimised for windows and it will run any game. I’m the only one from my friends that got a steam deck (not so popular in Europe) and all my friends that play with machines from other brands can play anything with no issues having paid pretty much the same than me, I can’t run any game I really want to play on it, and most of the games I run either perform poorly or need settings to the minimum. I don’t want a machine that can only run old games, I have my Nintendo switch for that which at least I know will run the games that Nintendo sells. This is something that valve is aware of bc they refund games if you complain they don’t run on steam deck
