Sadly, I was one of the ones that hurt himself when trying to sheathe it. I was 6 and I was being shown to cup it and let the back of the blade glide again my hand and... well... I was was super excited and went way faster than I should have and poked my hand with the tip lol. Learned to take my time from then on when I was training 😂

I don't get it why such a good channel of this educated Japanese sir that speaks fluent English and perfectly understands both Western and Eastern worlds has so few views. I don't wanna say anything bad about other japanese channels about japan but difference in levels of competence are pretty big and yet this video doesn't even have 1k views >:( I mean level of this content is like amazing. It's like friendly lessons and communication at the same time with high-quality design work (typography and graphics) and top-content. It really let me actually learn about Japan, not just make guesses... Shogo-san, after I learn Japanese language I am really going to visit Japan, starting with Kyoto and I really wish I meet here people like you actually.

The best growth is organic growth. I've been following Just Ask Shogo for just over two years, I think. I think it's best to grow slowly at first. And your early audience will spread the word of the your content. Growth will be a bit slow at first. But eventually like growing crops, the ground swell comes, and you will have a field full of healthy crops. Time is important. Never succumb to the temptation to boost growth artificially.

My sensei told me he's heard of a few cases of people injuring themselves. Like one man sheathing his katana within his forearm because he wasn't trained, or quite a few sending their blades flying out of their hand because they were practicing with a fake sword, with no mekugi to keep the metal in place. Most of the injuries are just from people who think they know what to do, but actually don't.

I find the noto to be one of the hardest things to do in iaido. It's a lot of muscle memory that your body gets tuned to. When I got my new iaito, I had to relearn my noto due to the fact that my new katana was longer than my previous one. It really is a precision movement and very beautiful part of all iaido kata when done correctly. I also love how it fascinates people who see someone do it in real life for the first time too.

That’s because you train incorrectly. Swordsmanship is about feeling not about physical movements. Regardless of what sword you use, the feeling of proper training will allow you to adjust.

What about the fact that the oil from a hand generally damages fine carbon steel swords? If you run the back of the blade along your hand, wouldn't that expose it to the oil and degrade the blade? Love to hear some thoughts on this.

The sheathing is "temporary". After your cutting session and flex everyone with a nice chiburi and sheathing, you should throughly clean and re-oil your blade afterwards, high carbon steel is prone to rusting, and no matter it's soaked tatami or human body, there's always water in it.

Kenshin would have needed to use his thumb as a rail to sheath the sword. I wish in the anime/manga they had altered his cupping method to accommodate the "sakobato" unique blade. But I get that they wanted to maintain the standard style of sheathing to maintain badassness.

Love your videos. There are many ways to sheathe a Shinken/Iaito, and different schools have different methods, but most have one single principle: the Saya goes to the blade. Use the left hand to sheathe, do NOT use the right hand to sheathe. Saya goes to the blade, not the blade goes to the saya.

Awesome explanation. The only thing I can say is that 1 you don’t look at the swamp d because you should have the skills to use a sword and know where it is in space and in relation to yourself and the scabbard. 2 keep the scabbard as vertical as possible..90 degrees to horizontal. 3 keep Handel higher than the sward tip

If I want to take classes as a beginner , what will you recommend first the kendo and after that iaido or opposite first iaido and after that kendo ? Because I want to take some classes but I don't know from where to start and also I'm interested from the samurai culture 3. What books will recommend to read about samurai culture and samurai spirit?

1. for a simple difference: in Iaido you are very lonely. :D on advanced grades the katana is very real with with sharp blade. thus they never fight one on one ! Iaido looks very elegant but you'll notice it is also meant to kill the enemy within first few seconds. thus the enemies in exercise are left in your imagination only and they better stay there. :)
