"This is all done by eye; there is no plan..." Chris, your 'by eye' is better than most people's plans. I know you've been doing this for decades, but it still amazes me how well you do it, how easy you make it appear, and how robust it is. That is going to be a great road for the farmer. I'm sorry about Fred. Here's hoping this fix will get him up & at it. Thanks for sharing with us all.

I seem to remember Barney had some serious repairs when you first got it. Get this new one squared away and let him earn you some money. Just takes longer to get in the black but that is how it rolls sometimes. Good luck on it. Hopefully he will earn for a long time to come once you chase down the bugs.

Happy new year. A bummer with the dump truck, but when you tried to drain the oil (there wasn't there) from the drop box, it clearly showed it hadn't been maintained properly for a very long time, and I must say I'm quite surprised it held on so long as it did. Just hoping the rest of the truck has been better maintained than the drop box.

IMHO: Smart to pull the drop box. Imagine if it was low (or no) oil there would be some damage in there. Bummer that the owner dumped it. The rest of truck, engine seems good, steering seems good, frame seems good. Rest of it is kinda 'normal' maintenance. (Brakes, axle oil seals... etc.) Truck should give good service for many years.

At least with the new haul truck you found out the problems on a site where you weren't stuck with nothing else to use to haul with. That aside it does bite about the coast of fixing it. On the bright side at least you'll know what you have once it is fixed. Getting all the bugs worked out can be a bitch though. All and all you've got a good fleet.
