Actually the concept goes like this: in absence of earthing device the current will flow from the coach body to the tracks passing through the CTRB (bearing) which may overheat the bearing causing problem in rotation of the wheel... The earthing device provides an alternate low resistance path for the current from the coach body to the wheels directly through the axle without passing through the roller bearing.. The carbon brushes maintains a sliding contact with the axle

I was going to type this comment. But it was already there. Good. The current is not supposed to be passed through the path of bearing. Besides one point that has not been explained is that most passanger coaches have thier own battery packs and generators connected to the axel for generating electricity for all electric appliances.

@@shrikantdhande4164 these are lhb coaches and it receives power using EOG so no alternator is present in individual coaches as seen in icf coaches..
