This was so entertaining! It's interesting to see how each state of India has their own unique way of doing things, and food as well. The 'middle' states of India along with the NE are areas that I don't fully know the specific cultural nuances, so this was definitely a great mixture of entertaining and informative! I'm curious about Myra's insights about Indian culture from a Dutch perspective. What aspects of Indian culture stood out to her? And I wonder if Adi has some more understanding why certain cultural practises happen because Myra seems inquisitive and would ask questions that was so innate in his understanding of how things are 'supposed' to be. Also: Adi, to my knowledge you did engineering and then currently you are pursuing a career in photography right? Could you tell us more about your story on how your career paths changed? It would be also nice if you could divulge (if you feel comfortable of course!) into certain misunderstandings that may have arose in your relationship. At my university in Australia, I'm a bit interested in a German guy, so that would be quite informative. P.S: Happy Diwali :)

LBell : That is true the food habits and culture does vary from state to state quite a bit . The place where they are that is Patna and in the North western and middle parts part of India their staple food is Roti while in the eastern region and towards the south the staple food is rice . I have been to US where rice or tortillas ( are given as side dish) but in India these two are the main dish and the curries ( veg or non veg) are the side dish. Basically rice crop cultivation is more in east and south regions and hence rice and towards north west wheat crop yield is more and Hence people eat more Roti .. so that’s the back story about it . Regarding culture India is “still” largely Hindus but languages/ local dialects are vastly different from one state to another while Hindi language is more or less largely spoken in every state . Most Hindu festivals the most popular being Diwali is celebrated across India but there are some festivals where some states celebrate with great pomp than others like Durga Puja in West Bengal and Ganesh Puja in Maharashtra and Pongal in the Tamilnadu , Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh and the entire south states . Geographically also it is very diverse where you have the Himalayas in the north with beautiful hill stations like Simla , Sikkim , Darjeeling and of course Kashmir and great sea side as well towards Goa and if you are into jungles we have the largest mangrove forest in West Bengal ( East India ) home of the royal Bengal tiger and if you might be looking for architectural heritage I would rate Ellora caves as the topmost in maharashtra and great temple architecture in the south and forts and palaces of maharajas in the Rajastan. Taj Mahal is actually over rated . So here’s in a nutshell India for you . 😊

@@sumeetprof1836 Thank you for your detailed response! Yes, India is truly the land of diversity. Geographically, linguistically, religion, food wise etc etc. And there is a beauty in this! Though I am Australian born and raised, my parents are Indian but come from two different states (Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh respectively). Because of that, I am very aware of the different nuances in those states. You mentioned the rice vs wheat difference spectacularly. Even today, after 25 years of marriage, my parents bicker which one's better. They have come to ceasefire where my maa has reluctantly admit dosa superiority but is adamant on the versatility of roti's. And my maa would always have to spice my nanna's food 10x more than her or my food (my nanna's is fine with eating a raw red Guntur chilli which is absolutely crazy in my opinion). Which I think is a distinctly South Indian (specifically Andhra Pradesh thing). Furthermore, a lot of my Indian friends are either Gujarati, Tamil or Punjabi, so I am also familiar with their distinctive cultures. The other states is unfortunately where I am not so aware, though I have some familiarity with Madhya Pradesh as the culture there is similar to my Maa's culture in Nagpur where she was born and raised before moving to Mumbai. India is like if the EU was united in one country, I feel. Although I was never born and raised there, I totally feel India (Bharat) is my motherland, and I treasure the culture I was raised in very fondly. Sorry for my long response haha, just felt the need to respond sincerely since you put time and effort in your response.

It's wonderful that your fiance's Indian family welcomed you with open arms. One of my childhood best friends is Indian and she did not grow up in India, their upbringing is more international influenced but when it comes to marriage she and her other Indian friends that did not grow up in India were mandated to marry only Indian men. She said it was in their culture to marry within Indian heritage even if nationalities are not Indian. They even went to a match-maker. She just kind of accepted it since she was not in love with any man at the time but for her other friends who are already involved with non-Indian boyfriends it was hard.
