I actually like call of duty, once you mute everyone, sometimes you don't even have to do that, it becomes a really fun game. whenever I see so much hate for it, i just think those people were the ones that did whatever the popular kids in school were doing to try and fit it. don't hate something because it's popular to hate it, hate it because *YOU* don't like it.

I agree. I'll also add that a lot of hate stirs up when two similar things are released, such as games or game consoles. People usually rally behind one of them, such as PS4 and Battlefield, and immediately pan the other, Xbox One and Call of Duty. They can never just enjoy both of them and will go out of their way to make people feel inferior if they have a different preference than them.

The problem with Call of Duty is that it's a cash trap. It's the same game re-released every six months. You're basically paying $60 for the same game you just played. Maybe it has a new gun or two, or a couple different maps, something you could get out of a $5 DLC. It's a simple fact, and if you can't see it, you've already fallen for the trap. That's not to say that EVERY Call of Duty is like that. The first three or so were fine. After that, it became a trap when they realized people would be stupid enough to keep buying the same thing just because it had a slightly altered title.

Kira Tsukasa the only problem with that argument is it is completely wrong. the game changes a lot more than people give it credit for. the gameplay is very similar but that is true of all game series'. there are always quite a few changes some good some bad.

It's possible to get that out of DLCs, but it's very rare that that happens. Most of them all you get is a couple of skins or a map or two.

***** If I had to compare an expansion pack to a single player DLC (even though most expansion packs included multiplayer), an expansion pack provides more content than a DLC of the same price. I got Mysteries of the Sith (the expansion for Jedi Knight) for about $20 and got an entire single player campaign lasting around 5 hours or so, plus an improved multiplayer over the Jedi Knight base game. Compare that to Mass Effect, as you suggested, $20 will get you maybe two DLCs each with a single mission that lasts about 20 minutes and maybe a squadmate, and nothing more. Now, I love Mass Effect and I have every DLC that is available for all three games, but they pale in comparison to something like Mysteries of the Sith.

considering all COD games after cod 4 are just the same game with updated features, I don't see how Black Ops was when it became "Absolute Garbage" as it perfected Zombies mode and had probably the most interesting story in a Call of Duty game. Hey there internet. This seems like an ideal spot for a bit of game criticism/history. Lllllllllllet's review: Call of Duty is quite possibly the seminal console FPS franchise. Sure, you had other progenitors, namely Quake and Unreal Tournament, but neither of those have had quite the same impact on console shooters that CoD had. Here I intend to both take a look at the "classic" version to see how well it holds up and put forth some ideas about why it has endured where others failed. We'll be evaluating it as a tactical multiplayer shooter, as that's where the main focus typically lies. In terms of the game itself: evaluated by today's standard of shooters, it actually isn't that bad. The levels have significant verticality and offer a variety of environments, the guns all behave distinctly and have advantages and disadvantages, and the fundamental gameplay is highly functional. As to the more artifactural aspects... well, the sound design is good enough that elements of it can still be heard in games today (everyone recognizes that grenade-hitting-the-floor sound, right?), the graphics are fine for the time and everything is well-lit enough to make sure that hiding in the shadows is never a real option. Classic is not without its sins, however, and they mostly come in terms of game balance and feel. The grenades are weak to the point of uselessness as seen here, there's no clear indication whether or not you're hitting the enemy, and most guns' recoil is so bad you're probably better off trying to close the gap and hip-fire or stay at a distance and snipe. Granted, this would have been true for the period, but CoD has never considered itself overly burdened with historical accuracy. Overall it holds up... just sort of okay. It's not bad; a decent foundation but with lots of room to grow. It's here that we might find the secret to the franchise's success. Anyone who's seen CoD recently can tell you that it doesn't seem too different on the surface from those games, aside from improved graphics and a bunch of new gameplay elements. And it's true: in terms of core gameplay, CoD hasn't really evolved that much, it's point at thing, pull trigger, get better at aiming and controlling your bursts. On the other hand, however, anyone who's *played* recent games in the series will tell you that there's a world of difference between 2003's iteration and today, and that comes from dedicated effort to continual refinements. The games play better today: controls are mapped more naturally, guns are more satisfying to use and better-balanced, increasingly powerful but increasingly harder to obtain killstreaks reward players who master the mechanics while easy fire-and-forget weapons like the underslung grenade launcher keep new players from being immediately turned away. The maps are designed with a decade of experience in mind and progression systems entice players to keep going and try new things. This is, by my analysis, is what has kept the series going strong. It's not the new physics engines, the more impressive explosions, or the new setting (more on that in a bit). It's the consistent effort put into refining the mechanics and making the experience more playable. But with the good must come the bad, with the delicious tiki masala must come the burnt, crunchy bits of chicken. Let's talk history. In 2007, four years after its initial release, the franchise was lagging. There was a sense of stagnation in the shooter genre, of America constantly rehashing its greatest moment of glory over and over again. Simply put, people were getting tired of playing the same World War II shooter in every game. Call of Duty was the one that stepped up and made the change to a potentially risky new setting: modern warfare. However, per my previously stated hypothesis, I don't believe it was the shift in setting that really got everyone back on the CoD train- that was just the hook. Gameplay-wise, the big innovation was in the multiplayer, where existing mechanics were refined and all-new systems were introduced. Suddenly CoD was back on top, and MW quickly became the model to emulate. However, we're now seven years on from that game's release and a familiar sense of fatigue is starting to become apparent. Despite a constant flow of new maps and new twists, shooters in CoD's mold have not significantly evolved since then. That which made the franchise strong has either reached a critical point beyond which it cannot progress, or vanished entirely. Innovation has been replaced by repetition. And nothing, *nothing* will kill fun faster than repetition. This, may explain why new games are sent out each year with only minor tweaks- add a mode or two here, a few new perks there, a handful of new maps alongside the best of the old ones. As long as we *think* something is new, we get bored far less easily. Here is my question to shooter fans: do you feel this is the case? Is Black Ops' multiplayer all that distinct from Black Ops 2's? Or Ghosts'? I'm interested to know. And, if so, what can be done from a game design perspective to bring new life to the genre? Or are we at a point where the basic mechanics can no longer be improved upon? Is it just enough at this point to keep playing yearly iterations of the same thing; do the minor tweaks keep the experience fresh enough? I'm curious to know.

long story here, but a good one. There was an experiment done with four monkeys. they were put in a room with a ladder with a banana on top of it. when they went for the banana, they were hit with water jets. after a time of this, they quit trying to get it. then one monkey thought,"im gonna try to get it one more time" and he got savagely beaten by the other monkeys. eventually they took one monkey from the group and replaced him with a new one. and of course, tried to get the banana, unaware of the water. And was beaten by the other three monkeys. including the one that got beaten up the first time. they did the same thing three more times until none of the original monkeys were left. the newest monkey went for the banana, and in turn was savagely beaten by the three others. even though none of the second group of monkeys get sprayed by water, they would still attack anyone that tried to get the banana. they had no idea of the outcome of trying, outside the beatings of course. if they could talk to us when asked why they do it. they would probably say "I don't really know, that's just how things are around here." sound familiar? most people are hateing something, COD for example, for what? recycled gameplay? looks new to me. bad graphics? they look pretty danm good to me. dumb story? Kevin spacey (star of a vary popular TV show about politics) seems to think its pretty good. so why all the hate for this game?????? because its COD. I have every CoD up until BO and that's where I stopped playing. They all just felt too similar. They're still fun to play every now and then but if I'm paying $60 for a "new" game I want something actually new and original. I'm also more of a story/campaign guy so the 5 hour campaign in the CoDs with generic and predictable stories compared to games like GTA, FarCry, Fallout, Mass Effect, etc. just doesn't compare. I also hate the whole DLC released a week after the game thing. It makes me feel like they're trying to steal my money (and is the main reason I am still so supportive of Rock Star having not released heists yet)

The First Modern Warfare was really fun and Spec Ops was a nice add in in MW2.I was not a fan on Black Ops at all. I only got MW3 so I could do the single player and then gave it back to my friend. Haven't touched BO2, Ghosts

For me, it kinda started with World At War. The CoD community was sour when the franchise went from an amazing modern war game BACK to WWII, because the WWII genre was extremely overdone at the time and became boring. I actually did enjoy WAW though, but MW2 was my last purchase.

Ghosts was definitely a step back IMO. Only game I played and then immediately put down after about an hour, it was just that dull. The others are certainly enjoyable, but having played CoD since CoD 3, it takes a lot to get me interested in a new CoD game.

So CoD Classic was originally a war simulator. The CoD series did not start as a simple shoot'em up has it has evolved into today. Being that it is a war simulator, of course the grenades take "9 years" to explode and the guns are a little hard to aim. Ever hold a real rifle in life? Tunnel vision isn't as bad, but it is there. When they say they've come a long way, I agree. The series isn't a war simulator anymore. This game was fun as dicks on the PC back in 2003 and 2004. Wish they'd played on that instead of console. This game isn't suited for console since it didn't have auto aim.

Just like everyone else I will be getting the new call of duty. Just like every year. Not because I like it or Im excited for it. Its just call of duty. Another chapter in a huge franchise. Like it or not you will eventually play a call of duty game. Then after 5 hours of multiplayer and story I can drop my controller and shrug my shoulders as I wait for the next installment. These games are like those crappy b list horror movies that you just watch to make fun of. Thats what we are all doing. We are just playing a game to make fun of it because it has been around for so long. This is what call of duty is. A cheap thrill that we can play while we eagerly await another game on our list that we are actually excited to pick up and play.

Sam Boyd Can't cook grenades and grenades aren't assigned their own button and must be switched in with whatever weapon is being carried. As well as specific guns being tied to a specific side (British/German), no perks, has an actual health bar, and no minimap.

I think it was 2011 when I started playing the CoD series w/ this one when I was probably 13 if I remember correctly, and I freaking loved it, it was a really amazing game, and it still is. The only HUGE problem that I found w/ this was the fact that there is only a max of 8 people in multiplayer, and that not a whole lot of people play it, but when you have a full game, you can have a lot of fun! It's a really great game, w/ a great story, and while the graphics look a little dated, it still looks pretty good for a game that was released in 2003!
