Maggie, All your videos help me so very much! I look forward to watching them daily! So thanks so much for sharing all your information with us! I wanted to ask you which drainable pouches have worked better for you? I’ve been using the 2 piece Hollister drainable pouch system but lately I’ve had over 2dz. pouches that have had leaks in them right after I put them on! I’m to the point that I don’t want to use their bags or anything by Hollister! And what do you use to get your pouch stick to your skin? Mine practically do not stick so I have to end up using waterproof tape & tape them on but the tape ends up getting blisters around and under it! It can be very painful! My skin has never liked bandaids or anything sticky cuz it all irritates my skin! Also, what is your favorite deodorizer & liquid you use in your pouches? Thanks for all your help! Love, Kim🤗💕

I had a permanent colostomy in April and am doing well! I do have problems staying hydrated because I’m a senior. I do have some pancaking. The hardest thing for me to deal with is that my ostomy is sitting on a hernia. My surgeon says we’re not to do anything as well as it is working. This of course makes it harder to hide in my clothes. I have to say this is still better than then the way I was living! Thanks for all the help you give us!!

Thank you so much! It is so ironic that so often your videos apply to a question I have literally the day I see the video! Today I want a salad so bad but have not tried lettuce. I had a pan proctocolectomy in May and ended up with an ileus and an obstruction in the first 6 weeks. My stoma was moved due to a hernia. Before I could eat almost anything but had never tried lettuce with that stoma either. That one was high output and now this one is starting to be also. Salmon goes right through me too so sweet potatoes are heaven! This one is now an end stoma and the other was a loop. Today I made a “salad” with grilled chicken , strawberries, blueberries, grapes, granola, and raspberry vinaigrette. Everything except greens because I am so scared of them. I guess we will see how the rest of this goes down and go from there. Salad is the food I miss the most!

Wow! I looked at several of your video's, They are all amazing, informative, encouraging and helpful. I was told I had the worst case of Ulcerated Colitis and Chrons disease the doctor had ever seen. I was misdiagnosed, as just being anemic, for many year. I wasn't properly diagnosed until I ended up in the hospital weighing 60lbs, a blood count of 3 and severly dehydrated. I did diet modification and am still alive. Thank you for your video's. No one tells you the whole story when they say you need a surgery. Even if they do inform you, you loose some of your hearing when you are not feeling. I have learned so much from your videos.

I too has had these painful mouth sores and they look exactly with what reappeared on the end of my stoma- well the g.i.t Ibd doctors worked it quickly. Yeah I totally agree chrons does always resurface itself- that's one hint my surgeons advised me especially when people forcefully wanted a reverse. Am at peace now and I do love my stoma it took me out of the misery pain and gave me decency. 😊❤

As a ostomate since 1985, I have had 1 episode of constipation. I ate a good portion of rocky road ice cream one evening. Needless to say, I was in the ER by 1 am for IV and muscle relaxant. I find that I must avoid mushrooms at all costs, but can eat bell peppers to my hearts content. Milk is a no no. So I allow myself a bit of ice cream when I am home all day. I have more issues with supplements. Potassium creates a lot of excess liquidity, and gas.. Also, magnesium. So I take these at night after supper. I have a bit of a citrus allergy, oranges, lemons or limes. I eat these in Moderation!!! All in all I do really well. I guess I'm really lucky my ileostomy behaves fairly well.

Thanks again for a great and informative video. I had UC and IBS before my surgeries (ostomy) and I could hardly eat anything. Now I can eat most things, but some allergies remain, for example shellfish. I can't handle onions either. That's the only thing that's a big no for me. If I eat onion, it runs straight through. I try to cook carrot and those kind of vegetables. Cucumber, tomato and pepper I can eat the peel if I chop it finely. I notice with certain things such as mushrooms that it comes out in the same consistency as it goes in. Certain foods such as peppers or lettuce I chop into mini pieces so that it doesn't stick, then it works. If I have chewed too badly on something hard, I get pain in the stoma when it is about to pass out, so I try to avoid that. But it's like you say, it works differently for all of us. However, the doctors told me that most food allergies are in the large intestine, so if you get rid of it, you often get rid of your food allergies.

There's a KZbinr called KentCarnivore who had suffered many of the things you have. I think he even had much of his colon removed and was told that eaten lots of carbs was what he should be doing and he did but it only made his condition worse. He switched to a carnivore diet and has zero problems/ symptoms now. His story is not uncommon - perhaps check it out. I myself suffered serious Diverticulitis and had to have a sygmoid coloectomoy- I now eat a ketogenic diet and my health is now metabolically healthy with gorgeous lab results and no intestinal issues going on 12 years now. I wish you and yours the very best.

I always remind people to not drink just water all the time if they're exercising, it's very warm, if you're sick or whatever that causes you to sweat or lose more fluids than normal. Only water can dilute your electrolyte balance even more, so it's very important to replenish those electrolytes in one way or another. I don't do well with electrolyte drinks that you mix yourself with water, I had to drink a lot of it in 2018 when Sweden had a long time of unusually hot heatwaves. As much as I love really hot weather (so yes, I was loving it in the summer of 2018), I do need to be careful and make sure I stay hydrated and keep my electrolytes in balance as I have hEDS and quite likely POTS. Anyhow, after all that "mix at home electrolyte" I started getting pain in my mouth when drinking it, like it felt raw and irritated in my mouth. These days I stick with salty snacks and make sure I drink enough, and if I have electrolyte/isotonic drinks, I get the readymade kinds like Powerade. I also find that I feel better if I limit my intake of plain water, and drink flavored, carbonated mineral water (as in mineral water from special wells with higher mineral content than regular tap water) or soda, or even just home made soda I make in my Sodastream with my tap water as base. There's just something about carbonated beverages or juice that makes me stay hydrated better than just plain water. It's so weird, but it works for me.

I do not have a stoma, but I do have Crohn’s Disease - diagnosed in 1999. The food that I miss the most is corn. I love the smell and taste of corn! Small amount occasionally are o.k. and don’t usually cause issues. But, as an actual full side during events like Thanksgiving and Christmas are absolutely forbidden. I found this out the hard way many years ago. A few hours after eating a lot of corn, it felt like sand paper going through my intestines. Talk about paying a huge price for just a few moments of pleasure. It is very difficult for me to pass the corn along at the table without taking any during the holidays. 🙁

I gave up ALL carbohydrates. Meaning, ALL vegetables, fruit, potatoes, grain, flour, etc. And all I eat now is meat, eggs, and oil. Which has remarkably stopped my inflammation, brain fog, nausea, constipation, etc. My diarrhea is more now. But it doesn't bother me. Because it's better than having no BM for weeks. Which was the case for years. I don't really like eating the only meat available to me now. (Which is jerky.) But I can because it agrees with me more than any carb. The reduction of so much discomfort with carbs is worth forsaking it, for me. Really. I feel 1000% better.

Very dumb question, but I've always wondered...You've mentioned constipation on your channel a few times. Normally when one has constipation, a lot of active "pushing" is involved to get yourself to go. With an ostomy, there is no pushing ability or having that control. How would one get it to pass?
@LetsTalkIBD

There is a little bit of pushing you can do with your abdominal muscles.. definitely not as effective when there's no rectum! But I have been able to massage my belly around my stoma and tense my abdominal muscles to help get my stoma going!

I just saw a video that was allegedly by doctors. (I believe they were doctors. But I don't know.) One of them spoke about the difference between his eating vegetables and meat. He said that vegetables came out whole. But meat came out liquid. Meat becomes liquid for me too. So, maybe eating meat would help a person to make stuff pass.

I eat a greggs sausage roll and I'm not even eating any more! But I have food allergies and intolerances, so I have to be careful the only food I can't eat today that i could have before is spinach, so bad. ❤

I've heard of people who eat ONLY greens. That are organic. Like a pound a day or more. And it may've worked for them really well, for a long time. Although one person who did this, I heard, had to introduce other foods eventually.

@BethGuinn that's what I would have loved but most veggies are ok, I do have other co-morebidates so just do my best.

With the fruits it sounds like oral allergy syndrome, have you ever discussed that as a possibility? My dad can’t eat any raw fruit at all since he was 16, they all have to be cooked or canned in some way for him

@@LetsTalkIBDI will try it at some point but since yesterday was literally 3 months since my surgery I will probably give lettuce a little longer of a wait. Also thanks for the LMNT recommendation. Some flavors a little salty but tolerable. Watermelon great! The temperature makes a big difference also. Drinks must be cold!

@@cgomez77I’ve had my colostomy since 2/7/2023! I’m still having a lot of issues with mine! But I’ve found that salads have not bothered me since having my surgery! Matter of fact they gave me a small salad while I was in the hospital & it was so good! Good luck with your colostomy! I’m praying yours works a lot better than mine has!🤗💕

Iceberg can cause all kinds of issues, especially gas. My nurse told me that iceberg is very hard for anyone to digest and it has little nutritional value. I find baby greens to be easier to live with, and still chew really good!

I have an Ostomy my GI Doctor told me that marshmallows help slow down the output but it doesn’t work for me. I want to shower more without my bag on but it leaks too often for me to do so. Anyone have any suggestions?
@sbalmer132

You should try a different brand of bags as some others may be better.I never leak unless I pancake .I use one piece bags and change the bag every other day prior to eating ,at which point the Stoma is inactive.

I limit my food in the 3 hours before I shower. It seems to slow my output during a pouchless shower. It seems to help manage the situation.

Not sure if you've been asked/done a video about this but I have to ask: What do you do in a disaster/grid down/end of the world type situation? How would you prepare for a natural disaster? Especially in a situation where sanitation might not be very great.

Wow great question!!! Holding off getting an ileostomy myself but in major situation or even being stuck somewhere like an airport for multiple days getting supplies would be a serious problem. And the difficulty with good choices. Thinking of New Orleans and Katrina, no vehicle and moved to the Superdome
