I have been searching for a video like this. As an Spaniard, I feel sad because we usually tend to reject, or to at least forget, what Al-Andalus meant for the whole country, and how it went to model our society. It is usually seen as something from 'abroad', and we do not really get to know much of it, and generally from a biased perspective. Of course, views might differ from mine, and other Spanish may have a different impression, but I really feel like we lost a lot when the Catholic Kings expeled all Muslims... They had no right to do so; they claimed being descendents from the Visigoths, and the Moors, invadors. But what were the Visigoths, if not the same? What were the Romans, then, who came before them, and thus the Carthanigians, the Celts, the Greeks, the Iberians, and all those who came before? Islam is seen today as a religion of hate, and that does not seem fair. And I myself am a convinced atheist, I would not change that for anything, but we should learn to see other cultures as having depth, different points of view within them, just like our societies. Spain was once half Muslim, and although we might tend to forget that part of our national history, at least in our language remain a notable amount of words from Arabic; ojalá que la albóndiga esté en la alhacena junto a la almohada.

I wanna say that I really appreciate how you as a European and non-Muslim have a very nuanced view of our faith. I feel like both Western academics and our own scholars possess view that rationalism, science, philosophy, etc are incompatible with religion, that Islam can only be one set of beliefs, and the Orthodoxy is infallible, even though for our entire history up this has never been the case Perhaps it is due to your European and non-Muslim upbringing. There was a man in the 20th century named Leopold Weiss aka Muhammad Asad, who was born a secular European Jew who later become a devout Muslim and scholar. When he visited Al-Azhar University, he noticed that the students would sit all day reciting and learning the works of great medieval theologians and philosophers to be taught Islamic law. However this was all they did, and were hardly allowed to become theologians and philosophers for themselves. Asad wondered why these students were being taught this way and could not get a decent answer from the people there. He wrote extensively about how crazy it was to say, in what was once the greatest places of thinking in the world, that only these specific medieval thinkers ideas were correct and that thinking in the modern era was heavily discouraged for seemingly no good reason. Though this problem still is an issue among many Muslims today, but I am glad many people like you, Muslim or not, are still able to see Islam for what it really is

Oh my God thank you for bringing up Leopold (Asad). Road to Mecca and his interpretation of the Quran (+ the very first english translation of sahih bukhari) are AMAZING. His translations are particularly niche because he 'felt' the language of arabic after spending a decade with bedouins. There's an immense difference between learning a language for scholastic reasons and learning a language's 'soul' which can primarily be achieved through experience.

I'm an Aussie Anglo-Scot and in my youth/uni i loved my art history esp the European Renaissance and have long sought to understand the Ancients, near Ancients and deep ones alike. I'm into that which presaged the Sumerians and set the scene for all the derivatives! So much came from those excellent Islamic scholars. I 'love' Averroes (Ibn Rusd.) He was/is so astute, sensitive, firm and gentle and keenly balanced especially clearly so in his understanding of the non-duality of gender. Hip hip hooray! Thank you for this. I am middle aged and not a scholar, I am semi retired and enjoy travelling (predominantly long distance mountain hikes). These travels have piqued my curiosity about the histories of our societies that are symbiotice with our geographical world. I will never be a scholar, but having hiked through the mountains of Andalucia for multiple weeks at a time, visiting the archeolological sites, the seats of learning such as Córdoba and Toledo amongst many others, learning about figures such as Averroes ignites my mind and inspires me to read more and walk further. Few people in the modern West realise that Thomas Aquinas' religious philosophy came directly from Ibn Rushd's reading and interpretation of Aristotle. Personally I don't like Aristotle but it amuses me and annoys me in equal measure how Aquinas is cited as a very important figure in the development of "Western thought" without understanding the role of Rushd and Islamic civilisation in that development. Ibn Rushd's attitude to women is heartening especially considering he was a student of Aristotle who had decidedly reactionary views on female emancipation. It is remarkable to think about the high level of philosophical debate that Rushd was engaged in Al Andalus at that time, especially if we contrast it to the limited intellectual life of the rest of Europe at the same period. Today people cite Oxford, Cambridge and Bologna as the first "European" universities without ever considering that of Cordoba, or the fact that those first educational institutions in Christendom were based on an Islamic model and filled (in terms of the curriculum) with Islamic learning.

@Amperoar Qw As mentioned in the video, it is a mistake to use modern labels on people in the past. Also, I am uncertain that he would classify as an atheist even so. Just because you are capable of thinking for yourself, and not fall pray to established dogma, it does not mean you are not religious at all. I know those who consider themselves christian altho they believe in reincarnation. People are complicated and so is religion. Dont get me wrong. I am quite in favor for atheism, but we must view this from an unbiased perspective (as far as that is possible) in order to get closer to the truth.

Ibn rushd was still very influential in the islamicate world as a scholar of jurisprudence. His bidayatul mujthahid was a standard text to many of the usulul fiqh students in many madrasas across the eastern World if I'm not mistaken.

Al-Ghazali has actually turned out to be correct. Early in the twentieth century, the anti-philosophy philosophers finally buried philosophy by acknowledging, like al-Ghazali, that problems of philosophy are actually problems of language, and language by itself cannot unlock mysteries of nature or reality. Science was made the only criterion to ascertain the veracity of facts or fiction. And, thus, philosophy died. This is why you don't hear about new philosophers coming to light. Philosophy we read today are simply ruminations of the past.

I also love those arguments/counter arguments between Ghazali and Ibn e Rushd and you can agree or disagree with their ideas but the most important thing is that they are trying to convey their ideas with arguments, logic and references which brings up the question that where did that all went wrong as a society and culture and I really don’t have any answer for that but as a Muslim I really appreciate those people who lived and did such great work many centuries ago. True but We can see the consequences of that irrational censorship in the Islamic philosophy since the 12 th century ghazali was more traditional then ibn rushed true but he stil had rational thoughts and critical thinking compared to IBN Tiamiya,dschauziya and Al wahab till today it got even worst with the growing influence of wahabi Islam in the last 200 years. They destroyed 90% of all pre Islamic and islamic shrines, graves,historical buildings,libraries and even mosques. And till today archeology around these historical places is forbidden, same as in mekka, they destroyed most historical monuments and graves and replaced them with skyscrapers. And they spread there censored wahabi Islam around the world by social media and by financing thousands of mosques worldwide.

Nice video and quite informative. However I personally find the clash of thoughts and ideas between Ibn Sina and Ibn Rushd (averrose) very refreshing and interesting. The fact that their attitudes towards each other with all that passionate scientific responses ( regardless if we do agree with both of them on every single detail of their philosophy or not) prove that they had no respect to the status quo when it comes to delivering real knowledge and a solid scientific ground” from their perspective” to their followers, students, and all those who have been influencing down the road.It is something in history we don’t get to see a lot. Especially people of their caliber just being fiercely passionate to that awesome meaningful philosophy without caring that it might just provoke a counter attack on their side that might affect their credentials, or taint their reputation but nope they just didn’t care. Which give us a hint to what they were actually loyal toward representing and what side of success they stood for, True and integral science. actually they gave mankind their best and with no fear of risking their fame and that frankly worked as a brainstorming sessions for intellectuals throughout history. When will you do a episode about Jaffar Al-sadiq, who was the teacher of all these men? the teacher of Ibn Hayyan(father of medicine) and Ibn sina(avecinia). this same Man Jaffar Al-sadiq altho was a Shia muslim, he still was the teacher of first founder of the sunni sect: Malik ibn anas. i would love to see an episode about Jaffar al sadiq, who used to have his own laboratorium in the 8th century, and was one of the earliest to come with the theory of human evolution.

"sunni" came about 150 year after he died. even the 4 school of the sunnis didnt know what "sunnism" is. you wont find 1 statement of abu haneefa, of imam malik etc saying "im sunni'. but you will find hundreds of sahaba saying "im shia". Jaffar al sadiq was oppressed by the Abasids because he was a shia, not only that, but even when al-Shafi'i praised him, they started calling Al shafi'i a Rafidi. which clearly shows that everyone who followed Imam jaffar al sadiq, were Shias. and those around them who hated them called them rafidah.

So he said, "O Salim, love both of them and do not be with their enemies because both of them are imam of huda." Then Ja`far said, `O Salim, is there anyone who denounces his grandfather? Abu Bakr is my grandfather. I will not get the syafa'ah of Muhammad Sallallahu `alaihi wasallam on the Day of Judgment if I do not love both of them and become hostile to their enemies. 'The words of Imam Jafar As Sadiq were like this he said in front of his father, Imam Muhammad bin Ali Al Baqir and he did not deny it.". In Syi'ar Alam An Nubala':260, Imam Jaafar al Sadiq said "Allah Ta`ala denounce Himself from those who denounce Abu Bakr and Umar`." Imam Jaafar Al Sadiq said "Whoever thinks that I am a ma`sum imam who is obliged to be obeyed then I really have nothing to do with him. And whoever thinks that I am separated from Abu Bakr and Umar then I will be free from him`. (Syiar `A`lam An Nubala: 259). All of his teachers are Sahabi and tabi'in such as Abi Ja’far al-Baqir, Atha` bin Abi Rabah, Muhammad bin Syihab al-Zuhri, Urwah bin al-Zubair, Muhammad bin al-Munkadir, dan Abdullah bin Abi Rafi’, Ibn Abbas, al-Qasim bin Muhammad bin Abi Bakr, Nafi’ al-‘Umari, Muslim bin Abi Maryam and so on. And all of his students are Sunni scholars such as Imam Abu Hanifah, Yahya bin Sa’id al-Ansari, Aban bin Taghlib, Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani, Ibnu Juraij, dan Abu Amr bin al-Ala`, Malik bin Anas, Sufyan al-Thauri, Syu’bah bin al-Hajjaj, Sufyan bin Uyainah, Muhammad bin Tsabit al-Bunani, Abu Hanifah, Mu’awiyah bin ‘Ammar al-Duhani, Ibn Ishaq, al-Hasan bin Soleh, al-Hasan bin ‘Ayyash, Zuhair bin Muhammad, Hafs bin Ghiyath, Zaid bin Hasan al-Anmati, Sa’id bin Sufyan al-Aslami, Abdullah bin Maimun, Abd al-Aziz bin Imran al-Zuhri, Abd al-Aziz al-Darawardi, Abd al-Wahhab al-Thaqafi, Uthman bin Farqad, Muhammad bin Maimun al-Za’farani, Muslim al-Zanji, Yahya al-Qattan and so on. Because Muhammad son of abu bakr was a shia, and imam Ali adopted him and he even fought against his own sister aisha in the battle of the camel. Btw he also killed uthman bin affan in the rebelion. Son of abu bakr was among the true early shias. When shafi'i started defending the jaffar sadiq, the sunnis started calling al shafii a "rafidi". The other books that supposedly as the Shia claimed to be written by Jaafar al Sadiq don't have any legitimate and clear narration reference all the way to Jaafar al Sadiq , those books are Kitab Al Ja`far, Kitab Ilm Al Bithaqah, Kitab Al Jadawil/ Jadawil Al Hilal, Kitab Al Haft, Kitab Ikhtilaj Al A`dha, Qaus Qazah , Tafsir Al Qur-an, Manafi` Al Qur-an, Qira`ah Al Qur-an fi Al Manam, Tafsir Qira`ah As Surah fi Al Manam and Al Kalam `ala Al Hawadits. All this books never have any reference to Jaafar al Sadiq. So tell me where is your so called "Shia scholars" that ever learned under Jaafar al Sadiq as a lot of Sunni scholars were his students.

Here, I am a student in sociology, and it is true that these thinkers who are not taught at all in France interest me particularly. But I have noticed that you are just doing a standardized bibliography of these thinkers instead of discussing their concepts. What matters are the concepts because they are the keys to understanding the world. For example, I know Ibn Khaldoun and I was disappointed with the video. I know that you have put a lot of work into it and anyway I subscribed to your channel because you seem to me on the way to becoming a specialist in Muslim thinkers, which is also why I hope you one day will go beyond the bibliography to something deeper, more complex ; your audience will be even larger. Excuse me if what I am saying sounds like a criticism. The final part about Ibn Rushd being ignored in the muslim world is very very important. The biggest question that has been dominating the very lives of muslims all around the world for the past few centuries is this: Where did we fuck up? And muslims generally default to the very ironic and yet fitting answer "God is testing us". After all this is the natural result of reading too much Ghazali instead of Ibn Rushd. And the answer itself, while completely being incorrect, is useful if you want a real answer. Islamic world is in shambles because muslims read too much Ghazali and because they answered the question with that stupid answer.

Al Ghazali was not criticising philosophy 🤦‍♀️ The argument was not about philosophy and it’s incompatibility with islam, in fact al Ghazali himself was a philosopher and even mastered the Kindi Aristotelian and neoplatonic branch and demonstrated how they are fallible via their own falsfa! To put it simply, Al Ghazali was not anti-rationalist, he was not against philosophy, he just says the philosophers of his time got certain things wrong. But he was very much in favour of reason.
