Good evening! Thank you very much for helping us to over 8,800 subscribers - this evening we're back in Lancashire for a walk around another of the county's most famous industrial towns: Accrington! Famous for its mills and coal mines, we briefly mentioned that Accrington was a centre for the manufacture of bricks. In fact, Accrington bricks are still made in the town, but during the production's heyday from 1887, the bricks made in Accrington were used in famous buildings across the world, from the Blackpool Tower to Battersea Power Station and even New York's Empire State Building!

I go there by the X41 bus about once a week, just for the trip though the lovely countryside north of Manchester,(and a full english at Cafe RiAnn). The streets leading off Abbey Street seem very pleasantly quaint and small when compared to most towns, let alone Manchester, but the architecture of the centre square around the Town Hall is mightily impressive and well worth a wander on a sunny day. The relatively low density of traffic is particularly refreshing. On one visit I braved the ascent to Oak Hill Park, and then the Howarth Gallery, both nicely kept.As people will have sensed from the video, Accrington is something of a pleasant trip back in time.

Well from the 60s to the 90s this was my town where I grew up in many different ways , characterful is a great description of this town , colorful another apt word ! This was a very rough place to grow up , it spawned many huge characters and places , you grew up fast in Accy . Thanks for the memories .

Ha ha that's a great way to put it! Accrington is a captivating place to visit and as you mention it's full of character - and characters! I'm really glad you enjoyed the video and that it brought back some nice memories of the place you grew up :) Thank you so much for watching!

Good to see Accrington in the spotlight. It's a characterful town with lots of attractive sandstone Victorian architecture surrounded on all sides by lovely West Pennine countryside. People always seem a little surprised that these post industrial Lancashire towns have so many impressive buildings, testament to civic pride and the confidence that came with rapid growth, innovation and industry, particularly during the Victorian Age. I grew up 4 miles away from Accrington, and always enjoyed the wonderfully atmospheric markets-both indoor and outdoor- as a youngster in the 1970's. No doubt there's been some decline since I left, as shopping habits have changed radically, but the markets still look good , at least from the outside. One thing I think you may have got wrong is the rail link to Manchester. A few years ago, around 2015, this link via the scenic Todmorden Curve was reopened. Manchester is far and away the dominant city in the area, so when this line was reinstated, after years of lobbying, it was a massive boost for the town. So I'd be surprised if the line has been closed again, except temporarily perhaps for upgrades. Currently we are seeing investment in our railways not experienced since the Victorian Age, and this, along with the thriving football club will put "Accy" firmly back on the map.

That's wonderful to hear! As you mention Accrington is a great town with a proud history, and the gorgeous Victorian buildings are a great symbol of its industrial might :) The town may be a very different place from before, but its wealth of history certainly surprised and fascinated me too - hopefully Accy will indeed gain ever more exposure in the coming years :) Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!

My dad Jack Clegg and his brothers Tom, Charlie and Harry were from Accrington and I used to visit regularly. Everyone supported the local cricket team Church and Oswaldtwistle Cricket Club. Accrington Stanley was the first professional football team I remember going to and I still watch for their results every Saturday.

I was born in Accrington (Rough Lee) went to Peel Park school, then Accrington Grammar school, worked at Nori then Associated Dairies, met my (then) wife in the Bees Knees. I probably know Accrington as well as anyone!

A bit more tha 30 years ago I worked on a musical production of "The Accrington Pals" at Perth theatre. Even though it was an enjoyable and memorable show, I have always held a kind of miserable image of Accrington in my head, due to the tragic assosciations. Thankfully you have changed that. Cheers.

I'm glad to hear it! I read about the stage production of The Accrington Pals in my research of the town - but indeed while it was a tragic history at the Somme the town of Accrington is very proud of the Pals' story :) Thank you very much for watching - I'm so glad you enjoyed the video!

Awesome walk in the town on a sunny day, 🌞. I enjoyed it very much. The medieval buildings look beautiful and historical. Your walks are always enjoyable. And your history lessons are always great and educational. Have you ever been to South Hampton in England. I heard it's a great place to walk and visit. I went there on vacation years ago. How is your weekend going? Mine is going great. Have a great day. Greetings from Canada 😀😀
