Some people say ahole, but the guy came from so little and reached for the sky and grabbed a huge chunk of sun. Man, no wonder he was so successful. His charisma and attention to comedy was a monster leap from what he was in his first films. Watching him in the Pumping Iron movie how he intimidated the other contestants and playing the alpha role was priceless. He wanted to win at everything. Who can hate him for that? His character wasn't really showcased until later movies, but he always had it. Awesome interview, great UL. Thanks for sharing, Michael Seven

David Letterman kept getting closer and closer to Arnold, and looking at him like a rare, beautiful LEGEND, which he is. Arnold is the living definition of the formula for success in all areas of life: making money, becoming famous, being smart, being funny, being popular, becoming a lawmaker, marrying a beautiful, famous woman of a historical family, being a bodybuilding success. Kudos to you Arnold. Arnold is a fantastic representative of the USA. Too bad Arnold can't run for President.

I’m not sure steroids were a shameful subject back in the early 70s. I don’t think they were made illegal until 1989 or 1990. It was probably his ego talking about the steroids having little to no effect. In bodybuilding they must all have massive ego’s in order to succeed i Suppose

I think the public’s perception of bodybuilders back then, was that anyone who got big like Arnold, was simply a juice head and were nothing more than a result of chemicals. I think Arnold was downplaying them to try and change the public’s perception of that time period. It’s true that steroids play a role, but without Arnold’s genetics and hard work, you’ll never see those results on an average person.

I was sitting in the studio audience during this tapping. I was in the city to take a polygraph for job I was interviewing for.. stopped at a diner w/ my bf before hand. The waitress asked if we liked David letterman- of course we were big fans of the show. So she proceeds to offer us 2 tix to see the show that night as she couldn’t make it. Needless to say I never took that polygraph nor did I get that job, but I did get to see Dave at his NBC original studio with Larry Budmelmin , Chris Elliot making his usual appearance out of the studio audience staircase, Paul Schaffer band along with Arnold . Not a bad night all in all ;))

You can see from this interview why some in Hollywood (Sylvester Stallone, Lou Farrigno) disliked Arnold. His confidence and ego that made him a superstar in bodybuilding is still manifest. It is what made him a great man and successful in 3 different careers, but it turned off others who were steamrolled by his oversized ambition.

I remember reading an magazine interview with him right around the time of Conan. He said he'd be more popular than Bronson, Eastwood, or any other action movie hero of the era. His confidence (arrogance?) was over the top. I thought to myself, "Sure, how many other roles can there be for a massive bodybuilder with minimal dialogue? This guy's in for a rude awakening." How wrong I was.
@Noname-rj6gw Жыл бұрын
People will say that is his arrogance but in order to succeed you must have that attitude and self belief. Only if you believe in yourself so much you will push yourself again and again after every failure until you finally find the way. Those who don't have that, give up very quickly.
@shredd57058 ай бұрын
@@Noname-rj6gw His arrogance only works because of the body building thing. He's like a comic book character. People expect him to be arrogant and smoke a huge cigar, that became his trademark, it fits perfectly with his comic book superhero body. Without the monstrous body (at the time, not compared to modern bodybuilders) he wouldn't have been able to talk like this, he would have been booed at Yes you gotta trust yourself and have big self confidence, but you're never supposed to say it aloud like that. Don't try to copy his social behavior, if you want people to like you. It only worked because he was 7 times Mr. Olympia, and famous for these "unstoppable man" roles

Mr. SEA so was Sylvester Stallone who was Arnold’s biggest rival in action genre by 1985 and through the rest of 1980s into the mid 1990s before their careers started to wane as started to make several flops in 1997 and started to become friends in late 1990s as well as business partners with Bruce Willis
