Being a Gen X'er is really getting sad. Losing so many of the greats from our childhood. *RIP* to Mr. Reubens. Thanks so much for the laughs and the innocent-looking but sharp as razors satire. Nobody will ever be able to duplicate your act. Also, thanks to Dave for always giving so many great talents a chance back in the early 80's when very few people were. I’m a late Baby Boomer and I remember Dave’s morning show. Letterman recognized Reuben’s talent and you can see it here where he gives Pee Wee 15 minutes. Pee Wee’s Playhouse was the most original thing you will ever see and his cast including Capt’n Karl and Miss Yvonne were ground breaking and the entire thing took guts and commitment.

@@GaiaCarney - So true. To this day, almost 40 years later, one of my good high school friends and I reminisce about swapping Letterman stories at our lockers each morning. I was blown away when I heard that he passed. I had recently just seen some of the scenes from Pee-wee's Big top on cable TV. I found myself totally laughing out loud. It was about a week or so before he died. Pee wee Herman was and will always be one of the best. His scenes with Valeria Golino showed his acting talent and his tender side. I know he had his issues and troubles with the law which showed his vulnerability. Please don't judge him on those sordid details. Rather, just enjoy his character and the way he made you laugh and smile.

Thank you to put it in context. I am discovering Paul Reubens and his character; it is very intriguing for me, I dont get it at all, I found the movie extremly annoying, I couldnt stand it. I am not American, but I normally totally get American, British or Australian humour, it is often hilarious( Dame Edna Everage is the best Imho). But this man, as talented as he seems to be, in this character is beyond annoyance for me. Weird how humour changes with time and places..

A lot of people rag on Pee Wee Herman as silly and not-serious humor. But not only does he have charm, he is taking huge risks in being in being 100% in character in live situations. Jim Carey and Andy Kaufman played with this concept live, but Paul "Pee Wee" Rubens takes it all-the-way by becoming a different persona altogether. That's where transcendence begins---to erase your own identity. Pee Wee is like a Jim Henson Muppet made flesh and bone. This is improve at it's most daring.

His character specifically was a that type of character and this appearance shows it perfectly - with his eye rolling and calling Dave out on fireworks being lit at night "duh!" The simple green screen effect was very cool before many people had ever used it. Being an awesome guest in SNL or Letterman or in a comedy club was NO JOKE. He was as good as the best - and really understood humor and timing. And - still does!!! Thanks Paul!!! Thanks David Letterman for getting me through my teen years with the best content on TV. - I was fortunate enough to briefly meet Paul back stage at an Oingo Boingo show in Los Angeles - he obviously knew Danny Elfman well - him having done score music for the Tim Burton movies.

To always be in character must be something extraordinary. This was like if Dave had a random nine year old boy on the show. I love moments like when Pee-Wee suddenly turns to the reacting audience and yells "Shut up"; it's one of the things he did regularly on the talk show circuit during the 1980s, and it was always a laugh. Another great appearance he did was the time he went on Joan Rivers's show and they made fun phone calls. Paul is so funny without a script, just doing what he does as Pee-Wee.

Oh my gosh I freaking LOVE Pee Wee, la la la😂🤣🥰 I first saw him on HBO around 1980 where he had his Pee Wee’s Playhouse stage show. Jambie, Captain Carl, Miss Yvonne (the most beautiful woman in puppet land) and all the hysterical characters. I loved when he would show old footage from educational films from the 50’s and 60’s and narrate them😂. I was about 15 then and my friends and I absolutely loved him!!! Loved his Saturday morning show too. He’s the best!!!

Reubens was brave for going all in to create Pee Wee. This is a good argument for what we can achieve by letting go of fear and just being who we really want -- who we really are.

I remember watching Big Adventure on my friends Mom's 10 inch tv and at the start of the movie the screen died but we still had volume. We sat in the kitchen and just listened to the entire movie as we watched each other laugh so hard that we were literally crying. Thank you Pee Wee. Rest In Peace.

Pee Wee! So his brilliance was to break character just every so often to let you in on the joke. Without that you would have had just another annoying comic. He had that warmth of letting you be his friend. Like Buster Keaton.

Boy, he seemed like a great guy. He was quick as lightning and always connected with the crowd. Along with the over-the-top nature of the character, he brought lots of nuance and subtlety too. He punctuated his act with nods to the crowd, eye rolls, and little side comments, and I think it was this kind of thing that made Pee-wee the kind of character that people just couldn't help but love--both kids and adults. He was just so damn likeable and entertaining. So, so good. Also, Paul Reubens, the man behind the bowtie, was such a sweet guy. To anyone who hasn't seen/heard them, I suggest watching Paul's appearance on Conan (the TBS show) and listening to his appearance on Conan's podcast. It's just Paul and Conan talking, and it's really, really great. Rest in peace, Paul.
