Here's a story. In the early 80's, I worked for a while at a carpet store in NW Toronto where Howie had been a salesman a year or two before (all I did was help move big rolls of carpet and cut them). The other guys had stories about him, but the main one was that as a customer was shopping around, Howie would haul out a big fake hand, slap it down, and say "Can I give you a hand?". I figured it was just a cool joke thing, but after learning about the germaphobe thing, I'm not so sure.

That’s a beautiful charming story….that we in Toronto are wrapped in a culture of mental health discrimination, makes stories like those less uncomfortable for folks. We should be able to talk openly about our proclivities.

Of course, post Covid, fist-bumps are pretty much interchangeable with handshakes, though handshakes are making comeback. OCD. Alas I know it well. I would have crippling OCD, if it didn't require so much extra work. Who would have that laziness is better than therapy?
@user-ej7bs8mk6b6 ай бұрын
OCD isn't rational. I have this form of OCD and its extremely hard and a chronic anxiety disorder, therapy and exposure therapy is incredibly hard work. OCD is not a choice, none of us want to be in this position but we are. So please, do not just say I would be one but its too hard, because it is extremely difficult, not a choice and a mental disorder.

He has OCD, which is not a rational disorder. OCD is not fun, it's been labeled as the 10th most disabling disorder, so don't trivialize it. I have it myself, professionally diagnosed, it's not the same as just being a germaphobe, nor is it simply enjoying organizing and cleaning.

We have to get past mental health/ ableism. Canadas parliament and judiciary (re Mike ward) are off the rails. HM and co have been working too hard at destigmatizing for so many years. Lt gov David onley, and David Lepofsky, Julie McFarlaine the mental health commission of Canada, reporting these issues for decades - describes ableism at Jim crowe proportions. Meanwhile, lawpro, the insurers for judges and lawyers, the Canadian bar association and more- all endorse ableist policies from carol Curtis Dan pinnington and others. Can find all this info on all these public figures…well publicized issues, like Vanessa’s law and mk ultra. That’s what “crazy “ looks like, not this wonderful human being we all love. Stigma.
