As I work from home due to covid pandemic, I chanced upon your videos. They reminded me of my 1970's forays into the printing universe (overseeing letterpress production of the college magazine I edited). My new work brought me back to the printing presses (but they don't press them like they used to) with the local gov reports, albeit in digital tech. I wondered where the gentle giants of the 70's are now? Glad to see them still at work.

Good old Van Son Rubberbase! The best inks I ever found for printing letterpress on a platen press. (Do they still smell as good as they did?) I always felt I had to mix in a dab of Cobalt Drier, though, if I wanted to be sure that the rubber base inks would actually dry, especially on business card stock. I've got to say that, while your example of the finished product looks really cool, with its 3 dimensional effect of the white cotton paper stock raised above the blue solid, it is _not_ traditional letterpress printing. I had a table top platen press, and a fairly good selection of ATF, Balto-type and Kelsey foundry type. I learned actual platen press makeready from high school print shop, and from reading many classic textbooks on the subject. We went to great lengths, in the days when letterpress was actually being used for most commercial print jobs, to _avoid_ pounding the paper so hard that the type and engravings pushed through to the back side of the sheet. That was considered poor quality, actually. We used fine tissue paper overlays, under the tympan sheet on the platen, to bring the image to perfection _without_ pressing through to the back of the sheet. Your example in this video is a clever specialty item, but today's trend of hammering the stock for a reverse engraved effect is relatively new; not traditional lettterpress craftsmanship. Please know I am _not_ finding fault with your work, I just wanted you to know about the difference. Your press rollers look like they are very high quality, or brand new. Nice. The shop where i worked during the day, where i ran offset presses, had a Heidelberg Windmill. In the 80s and early 90s, they were still using it to print pamphlets, bulletins, etc. with text set on a Lino-type machine. Near the end, before I retired in 2009, we still used it for numbering, perforating and the like. i look forward to seeing more of your videos.
@KGSnow24 жыл бұрын
OK, I just watched the "Pam -Am" wedding (Part 2) and i see that you don't always pound the paper with impression, but sometimes you do back off so there is little to no impression on the back. Good deal! I appreciate your attention to quality. Do you ever print directly from type, or is it always a plate? Keep up the good work.

So little amount of ink :O How do you mix the same colour when printing in larger quantity?
@davewood4065 жыл бұрын
The formula is in "parts" meaning a ratio of the whole thing adding up to 100 parts total. Percentages, basically. So the total weight of whatever quantity of ink you need will be your 100 as a starting point. That 100 could be any weight. 10 grams, 50 grams or a kilogram... Ounces, pounds, or ton. The parts are a percentage of that 100.

With this crazy viscocity and tendency to stick to anything, how you correct propotions for losses on palette and spatula?
@JukeboxPrintLive4 жыл бұрын
That's a good question... We try really hard to make an accurate mix and sometimes we do need to adjust the color on press by doctoring it a little bit. I'm not sure the losses on the palette or spatula are enough to make a big difference.

@neosmartsecurity39645 жыл бұрын
I really enjoyed watching this presentation of your process. We are using a process cyan on our logo, but this classic blue will work just fine for our first set of 100 business cards 🙂. The neon green is where difficulty comes. It's Pantone 375 C, but the CMYK conversion is definitely not neon. According to everyone, we can't achieve neon green, which doesn't sound logical to me. I watched your Voda neon printing on another video, but that wasn't offset printing. Right? Maybe we need you guys to do our cards!
@JukeboxPrintLive5 жыл бұрын
Pantone 375 C is exactly 75% Pantone Yellow and 25% Pantone Green. A base of green ink is entirely absent from CMYK printing so that's why you won't be able to achieve this vibrant color . Intense greens almost always need to be a custom mixed spot color to get it just right. Definitely get in touch because we can certainly make a punchy neon using 375c. We can do glow in the dark letterpress printing too... but... it's still a secret!

The feeling of the colour is very zen, however the description of the colour "reminiscent of a sky at dusk" makes me uneasy. 2020 is the beginning of a new decade but also the end of one, a sky at dusk. Maybe a "sky at dawn" is a more comforting thought. Heaps of positive feelings though x
