Mr H dissects the latest TV Licensing letter that's been doing the rounds recently with the over 75's explaining the BBC's unpopular decision to end the free TV Licence benefit for many pensioners aged 75 or over as of June 2020 when government funding via the DWP ends.

Dear over 75 year olds, The BBC will need to pick your pockets in order to fund massive salaries like Gary Lineker's 1.7 million pound a year, We really don't care if you find this financially difficult, just pay up or end up in court. Yours with contempt The wealthy BBC

What is disgraceful is that the BBC was only given the right to set the level of the licence fee themselves in return for allowing over 75's a free licence. Now they have reneged on that can we also take away the other side of the agreement and go back to the Gov't setting the fee?

The Pension credit brings the old age pension up to the minimum pension level. However, if you receive the basic pension then you will have to pay for a TV licence. How is this FAIR! Those 75+ aged pensioners on pension credit will get a free TV Licence, but if you receive the basic pension, you will not receive a free licence.

Its around 270 staff and to be fair the Glastonbury programmes have been excellent this year. I would love to have been there but couldnt afford it. Its what the BBC are for, broadcasting and the correct use of my license fee. Why do people moan about everything? @MrHsHotPot
@MrHsHotPot 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Eastwood978, I'm glad to hear that your 86 year old Father is both happy and in a position to be able to afford to pay £3 a week for a TV Licence but many over 75's are not and this change will see many who are just above the threshold to qualify for Pension Credit lose their free TV Licence. Whilst they can become Legally Licence Free (LLF) they will then be automatically subjected to the threatening, and some find intimidating, TV Licensing letters/visits that the rest of us who LEGALLY do not require a TV Licence are subjected to and find both offensive and objectionable. This is why it is better that the BBC adopt a secure subscription model and that way those who use and enjoy BBC services, such as your Father and yourself can subscribe to the BBC and those of us who don't want them can be left alone in peace.

They cannot quantify the number of people using their signal it is not like electricity which can be metered. If all of the over 75s died firstly the BBC would not know but there would not be a surge in the transmission levels due to the lack of people receiving it. It is like a big fan you can put one person in front of a hundred people in front of the fan is not affected. To add to this, people living on the coast of France can receive ALL of our TV signals and do not pay.

Even if people don't pay for a licence and C(r)apita send round a couple of goons with a warrant with plod in tow the WARRANT the goons have will not have the address, or homeowners name on it meaning they could go to any address and claim they have powers to enter. A warrant with no address should mean they have no powers to enter as it would just be a copy of a warrant as produced in a FOI request.

Hi Dennis, my father is also 82 and as things stand he would still qualify for a free over 75's TV Licence when the rules change in June this year. But it all depends on if the BBC start making applicants jump through hoops to get one if he'll claim one or not. As for yourself you probably know the drill once you are LLF (Legally Licence Free) of ignoring their threatening letters and sending any of their sales people on their way should they knock on your door. All the best and enjoy your LLF lifestyle being free of the BBC.

My take on this exactly Silverfoxdude7, the BBC were already floating the idea to the over 75's as early as 2015 of giving up the benefit of a free TV Licence and to start paying again by enlisting some of it's older 'stars' to promote the idea such as Joan Bakewell.

@@MrHsHotPot Mr H's Hot Pot there is an argument for the over 75s to pay as that demographic is prob their main audience. But to make pensioners prove their finances to them is a disgrace, Most people are honest especialy the elderly they could just ask them to pay if they can afford it instead of this constant mistrust by the BBC, Personaly i dont have any live tv broadcasts in my house and i dont pay , Payment for the internet is enough for most people i hope they wake up and the bbc will die off with the pensioners

Indeed Siverfoxdude7, chasing the over 75's to prop up the BBC's dwindling TV Licence sales is certainly a short sighted policy and in effect an admission that they have lost the younger generation to Amazon and Netflix. I think that there is an argument to maintain the BBC as an independent non-commercial news service, funded by a very much smaller licence fee than present, or through general taxaton. However there is no justification to maintain by a licence fee any other BBC TV services which come under the headings of entertainment, sport or documentaries, as those services could be supported by commercial advertising.

It beats me why Sky and ITV haven’t challenged this as having a tv licence is required to get people to view their contents. This must affect their businesses including advertising revenue and their business modelling. If people give up their tv licence and rely on catch up, Netflix, amazon and KZbin etc then these companies revenue streams are going to suffer.

A lot of people as we know subscribe to companies such as Virgin Media, Sky TV, BT TV, Netflix, Amazon Prime TV etc. So my question is, why can't people make an informed decision and be given the choice by all these companies to not have any of the channel's that broadcast live TV. Basically have the right to not be forced to have channels that they don't want. So when Crapita turn up on behalf of TV licensing, you can actually prove that you haven't got an Ariel plugged in to the TV and your subscribed package with say Virgin Media etc does not include any channel that requires you to have a TV License. Problem solved.

Hello mate. Thanks for your vid. I haven’t bought a Tv license for a couple of years now. I do not watch live tele or iplayer. I’ve had a guy come round and he seemed to think he could gain access to my flat quite naturally. Of course I said no. Twice he asked if he could come in and check. I simply laughed at this. I didn’t check to see who it was - otherwise I wouldn’t of even let him in the building. Like others, I receive letters, and what I find interesting is that they allow everybody to see (in the plastic window) and in red letters, I’m apparently behind in payments etc. So the shame trip is now being used. I myself couldn’t care less, blow em! However, my dear old mum would’ve worried herself to death if she ever thought she owed anyone money. Why should we pay for biased, untruthful news? If they wish to offer the population biased, Government puppet news- then they can darn well finance themselves. I get my news from alternative media where I can access actual genuine news without cover ups and lies. The programmes aren’t that good anymore anyway. I get all I need from elsewhere. I can’t believe I used to shell out £60/70 per month to Sky. And used to pay for poor BBC programmes. I’m not a football fan either haha! So o don’t miss football round ups etc. Thanks again, Dave

Bad publicity is unfortunate and sometimes has to be swallowed. Like you say near the end, the BBC should scrap the licence fee and replace it with a subscription similar to Sky. Not only that, why can’t they advertise and generate funding that way just like ITV? However, it’s not just freebie TV licences that pensioners will moan about loosing. What about bus passes? That’s been a thorny subject for years, and it costs a fortune! They should never have been brought in in my book. You don’t miss what you ain’t had! Some buses are packed yet the driver may only take £5! Totally unacceptable! Make them half-fare bus passes, then let’s see who waits to go one stop, or goes riding around for nothing other than to keep warm in winter! Yes, believe it or not, that actually happened to a friend of mine who’s a driver for First! He had this old guy on his bus for over six bloody hours!

@ Paula Cannon They lied to You. I have some long knives in My kitchen so I could stab somebody, But I don't. Do You see how stupid the BBC's logic is? A BBC TV licence is only required IF You watch or record TV shows as they are broadcast. You also need one for TV content on BBC iPlayer. You can legally watch catch up content via IYV Hub, My5, All4, Netflix, Amazon Video and any DVD or BluRay disks you may own. Hope this helps You :-)

If you think of it, someone who has turned 75 this year would have likely been paying the license fee since 1970. 50 years, surely enough is enough. I don't watch any live TV as there are enough box sets to keep me going till I reach that little white dot of life that goes out like it did on the old TV sets.

Simple solution. Product placement. Basically, advertising without the ad breaks. That would raise a fair bit of dosh it it was used in Eastenders. They could charge a fortune. Then it would look like the ‘real world’ too. It might even pay for us all.

I totally agree with your sentiment on this matter of the over 75 responding to them, the BBC asking for proof of pensioner financial standing,if the BBC wants that sort of information they can contact the relevant government department, one thing I will add that if the BBC do contact the relevant government department, that a record is kept of such contact, also that pensioners are informed of such contact by the government department under the terms of the Data Protection Act, that people have a right to be informed, that confidential information has been passed to the BBB. The best way is to ignore, and don't respond to request by the BBC in letter form or by harassment at your front door give no information, that is your right to remain silent and have no dialogue, and just close your door, also take no paperwork from them at your door, also record them on audio video, keep a date and time record of such visits, One thing further contact your MP and let them know, that you will withhold your vote for them if they are not prepared to get this situation sorted out, remember this they cannot afford the pensioners block vote, you have the power to overturn government at general election, also do you know that all MPs get free Tv as they don't need to have a licence, as this is one of the perks of being an MP gives them free Tv viewing.🙊🙉🙈🙌BBC goons👹👽👺👾📑👈 👴👵🙅🙋be strong 💪 and say nothing.✊👌

@@robbiemify Its a very grey area, not if they get a court order to do so, just like coming to your home with a warrant and the police in tow to search your home for evidence of having and using a TV receiver to watch live broadcasts, I total agree with you that the BBC does not have any legal right to do so, they also have no right to harras you continually at your home, but they do it knowing the police will take no action against them for doing so, what is needed is a united front by all, contact your MP and tell them straight that if they are not prepared to get this act repealed then you withhold your vote for them and their party if they sit on there hands and do nothing, this could cost them an election and access to No10 , that is the way to get this problem sorted out or mass refusal to pay, give them nothing, 0 contact and 0 information just ignore and close the door, you are under no obligation to give them anything, you have the right to remain silent and are doing so, even the police state that, you have the right to remain silent, also you have the right to take legal advice as well.

Just a quick suggestion from across the water....why not reply to their letter with your counter-offer to purchase a licence just as soon at they pay you £500 for YOUR time and £500 for YOUR performance.....after all, are you not already paying them for THEIR time and THEIR performance?....so there`s nothing unusual about using the right-of-subrogation!...and that any further communicating and/or corresponding with you, is with them ACCEPTING the terms & conditions of the commercial contract? For certain people who only watch Eurosport and maybe Discovery channel and lots of online content, why should they fund the BBC? We all have to make our own way in the world to make a living, the BBC should do the same and stop funding from an outdated and dubious business model. BBC stop openly transmitting your content to homes and there won't be a problem. When I go out to shop at Sainsburys when I get home I don't expect Tesco to have dropped off a basket of food demanding I pay for it when didn't ask for it!!!

Interesting information indeed unfortunate to say many of you individual people has signed a attendance agreement to agree to pay for TV licence And this attendance agreement you assign to the property of the council and private members of the home community Which engaging that TV licence have a 4 restriction going against the person's rights because you are signed agreement with your private landlord or your local housing officer that you agreed on the terms that you have to pay TV Licence This including certain devices such as mobile phones laptops desktops and also computerise gaming Which day are allowed enforcement of act to go against the person's privilege As a further investigation must be carried out immediately to investigate to see if they are receiving or able to receive TV reception In this response a letter will be sent out that you have to phone up the provider to notify that you do not need a TV licence if a person has not got a TV licence at all and they are watching TV they are breaking the terms and conditions of the tendons agreement which is stated with your local housing officer and also your private landlord Much obliged that a letter must be given out to the person need any for the updates of contents which is going to be delivered because many people are bone idle to search of the information over the internet In other words that many individual people out there who have not got a TV licence you will be affected by the system itself as the system is fully aware of what people are searching up on a regular basis where information is given out freely This is including if you were searching up any information from Google and TV licence will have the power to upgrade their self so they are all over the internet for example People who said shop information over the internet to avoid TV licence has simply been caught up in a wedding now the forcement accident can send out a letter stating information about content where you can watch TV on And a letter will be showing a sign agreement that you are not watching TV but a fully investigation must be carried out immediately for the incoming event in case the person is lying to the TV licence people

Sorry for my ignorance, but if the license fee isn't paid, do people not have access to the channel at all? Or is it like a Public Broadcasting channels in the US where the content of the channel is available whether an individual pays or not and the station appeals to everyone to chip in to keep the station on the air?

a simple electric box which you need to insert a card to watch tv would suffice, and have the card only available on subscription. lasting 1 year then only those who want to watch the bbc would have to pay. as it currently is, is not fair to those who want to watch tv but unwilling to give bbc money.

what other reason do the British public require than the treatment of over 75's by the overpaid public school brigade. the licence fee/tax is out dated and lives in the last century. with so many better options now available both free and via subscription. this is viewing when you want to watch not at set times. how much longer do the public broadcasting stations think they can last without changing how they provide there programs. im 10 years now without a licence and as i do not watch or ever watched tv I'm sure I never will. I'm in possession of over 1k DVD's and watch films via both amazon prime, netflix and youtube. I also buy some films from car boot sales when I find a film that I might enjoy. tv has never had an appeal to me as to many programs have always been set at a fixed time. if I could have sky tv just to watch f1 races I would but I'm very unwilling to give BBC money just to watch a different companies programs. I have informed sky of this and suggest others complain to sky and let them know why i cant watch it just because of bbc. never no they just might demand some of the licence tax due to lost custom.
