I am 3 and 1/2 years post transplant, bone marrow stem cell. After 1 year I was able to ommunicate via mail and email with my donor. He saved my life. I had AML. We stay in touch through his wife's Facebook page. It was 7 years between the time he signed up and when he donated. He's somewhat shy and does not talk about it. I hope to maybe meet him one day. He's in Texas and I'm much older and live in Florida. Be the Match and the National Bone Marrow donor foundation are truly life savers!

Wow! While I wipe away my tears here, I just wanted to say that this vid was amazing! You and your donor are truly strong, heroic individuals. I joined the Be the Match Registry about 7 years ago and I finally got the call that I was a match for a 35-yr old male with Acute lymphoblastic leukemia. I have my physical scheduled on Monday and then I am good to go! PBSC is scheduled on July 7th and I’m very anxious about it (in a very good way). Your video is truly inspiring! Blessings!

Hi Luis, I am so happy that you could find a match and you survived. I registered in 1996 and I just received a call that I am a possible match. Now it its 1/8 chance that I could be a perfect match. I am crossing my fingers to be the one. I know it is a huge commitment but when I think about that life is fragile and pricesless and I got the opportunity to save one is a feeling I can't explain.

Hi Luis...your story has inspired me with what I do here at work. You see I work for an inner state public donation program grant here in Arizona at one of our local hospitals...funded to help and consent mothers who would be willing to donate their baby's cord blood for transplantation. Your story has inspired me to 'see' what it all comes down to and my whole purpose to my job. I am happy to see your be blessed with more than anything ...life!!...thank you

I hope that you're still doing well! After my dad passed from leukemia (CML) in 1997, I joined Be the Match. Unfortunately, last year I was diagnosed with MGUS (a precursor to multiple myeloma). Since the abnormal protein associated with MGUS originates in the bone marrow, I can no longer be a donor. When I called the registry to withdraw my name, I cried like a baby. I try to encourage others to join Be the Match....there may come a day when I will be the one who needs a donor.

Such an awesome story. I donated stem cell to a gentleman in another country which I don't know anything about him but he is in remission and is doing well. I hope to match someone before I am taken off the registry. This all went down in 2005. I donate blood on a regular basis and good luck to this couple.

I got matched with a woman who has leukemia, I passed through all the physicals and screenings so I am hoping the transplant goes well for her! The probability of meeting her though is pretty low since they told me she was in another country and the country she was in did not allow for direct contact.

How come you got to saw your donor? Just wondering because i thought it was anonymous
@luismonzon84
@luismonzon84 10 жыл бұрын
It is completely anonymous. However, in the U.S. you have the option of meeting or talking with your donor after 1 year post-transplant. This can only happen if both parties agree. This whole sharing of information is facilitated by the transplant hospital or the donor's Be The Match representative. Hope this answers your question. :)

Yeah, I'm a little nervous since I have to go through the actual bone marrow donation instead of PBSC and it'll be my first time under anesthesia but its definitely worth it. I think my family is more worried about the process than I am but I figured its nothing compared to what my recipient is going through right now.

Please sign up to be a donor! Someone's life most certainly depends on it. If you are worried about the possibility of pain, please understand that most of the time an apheresis machine is used to filter your blood, so it is not something to be worried about. If an actual bone marrow harvest is needed, you would be under anesthesia. As a patient, I have had my bone marrow taken 10 times and I didn't save anyone's life. I would have it done 100 times if I new it would save just one person.

The reason there are not alot of donors is because the actual part where they take the bone marrow is painful. it is not like taking blood and walking away. they use a needle to go through your bone. Even though it is a painful procedure, nothing in the world could compare to the feeling of joy when u find out u helped someone live, u helped someone get their life back.

I tried to join the list but was rejected. I'm a Homosexual and even tho I've only been with 2 men in my entire life, my husband and I have been together 12 years, and each year the HIV tests come back negative, this outfit doesn't seem to care they have 2 people willing to go thru the process to save a strangers life. BUT I'm glad to see it works for some folks.

+46619TAB Hi there. Yeah, that's unfortunate but have read recently that the FDA has been looking at changing donation standards. Hopefully this changes soon. It's a restriction that was started when the HIV epidemic started in the states out of fear but they never got around to changing it. It's ironic that I received a BM transplant and countless blood transfusions but prior to my diagnoses I couldn't donate either...you see I'm "family" too. :)
