The "saving the cat scene" was to show us how high Lev can actually jump and how far Lev's arms (wingspan) can reach. At that point Kenma realized that he wasn't setting the ball high enough for Lev to hit it, so it made Lev try to adjust his spiking point which threw off everything ( timing and position of the ball) for both Lev and Kenma in the beginning.

Name trivia: Many characters in the Nekoma team has a cat pun/reference in their names. Kenma's family name Kozume means "loneclaw". Kuroo means "black tail". Yamamoto's first name Taketora means "fierce tiger" (this also matches Tanaka's first name Ryunosuke which has the kanji for "dragon" and in Japanese culture dragons and tigers are often complementary to each other). Lev is Russian for lion. A notable exception is Inuoka (the guy with the big eyes who distracted Adam) as he has the character for "dog" in his name instead. His birthday is also the dog day in Japan so it is certainly not a coincidence that he's meant to be a puppy amongst cats lol (he was the goofy dork paralelled with Hinata in that first practice match if you remember)

Actually, I think it's great that what made Kenma and Lev make a match was thanks to a cat, just like their team's mascot. I really thought that point was incredible.
