"How to play the music by Pater Noster (Our Father) Carl Czerny?
All piano students know that it is almost impossible to avoid the bitter cup of piano education, Carl Czerny's etudes. Yes, many of these etudes are not of a high virtuoso level, in many cases they are from educational repertoire for children. But actually it is Czerny’s works, in addition to Haydn's and Mozart's, that are most difficult for performers to play. It is generally accepted that his etudes are only "finger exercises" to develop the so-called "technique", which primarily refers to finger velocity. And this idea that it is no difference between technique and finger velocity is one of the reasons (but not the only one) which led to an unprecedented decrease of piano playing quality among the last three or four generations of performers.
Back to C.Czerny. We will note that his etudes offer much more than just exercises for "finger velocity". Let's say more, perhaps these etudes are just not very suitable for the development of this "velocity". We invite professional (maybe also famous?) pianists to play "simple" etudes by Czerny. And we can be sure that the result will be disastrous. The academic world, the famous musicians will in most cases immediately show their helplessness, lack of understanding of the musical piece structure, lack of imagination, musical thinking and the understanding of Music in general. Today, the musicians do not use their heads and much less their hearts, they are only thinking with their fingers. We must know, Czerny is primarily a Teacher of Music, details and nuances of piano playing, he is a Teacher of musical form, and all this is contained in only one or two pages. And most importantly, Czerny develops musical imagination, it is from this point of view that one must approach his etudes, then they will no longer bring mortal boredom to students and they will be interested in finding new sound nuances and musical possibilities. Improvisation, the basis of Music will therefore develop and students will gain independence, courage and artistic maturity. However, there is no doubt that it is difficult to turn the limited thinking of piano teachers into creativity. There is only one advice left for students, do it yourself, don’t be weak-willedly and blindly obedient, the Key to Music is only in your hands.
I do not claim to have the solution for the “Cherny problem”. However, let's try to take a step in this direction and look at it from a different perspective. So, here are three rounds of the Battle of the Year, Czerny against (or for?) Lindgren."
